23 May 2007, 1 hr.In this seminar, Emmanuel Skoufias will present findings from a new report (written with Harry Patrinos): "Economic Opportunities for Indigenous Peoples in Latin America."The report examines why even with better education, job training, and other skills, the majority of Latin America's 28 million indigenous peoples are unable to increase earnings and boost their living standards.Implications of these findings for formulating policies that improve the economic opportunities of indigenous peoples will be discussed.To encourage a debate about the major challenges Canada will face in the coming decades, the Dominion Institute and the Toronto Star have invited 20 leading thinkers to write about an issue or event that they think could transform the country by 2020.It offers a fresh look at how key global trends might develop over the next decade and a half to influence world events.Mindful that there are many possible "futures," our report offers a range strategic games can help improve students' mental abilities in areas that include critical thinking skills.If they do not, they will find themselves victimized in many ways by people who want to convince them of things that are not necessarily true or in the students' best interests.Chess can teach kids cause and effect and to think strategically, but it only represents one approach.There should be tons of data available to utilize as to when this would be best to introduce (what age) and how to introduce it.For example, Mind Benders and deductive reasoning workbooks from critical thinking (www.Also, the Usborne puzzle series books are extremely engaging for young readers and teach kids how to use information to draw conclusions and make basic inferences.This is a very important group, and I hope things get on track.Learning how to solve a problem is more important than learning the solution to any particular problem.Through chess, we learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important factors and by eliminating distractions.There are countless studies demonstrating improved reading and math scores where chess has been used as a learning tool.We were tasked with recommending means of enhancing critical thinking skills via chess and strategic games.The reasoning for this approach is that children love to play games and using this as an ally we can help children become better critical thinkers while having fun.They won't even realize their minds are growing stronger as they analyze the problems encountered in the strategic games we are considering recommending.With the growth of their ability to recognize a problem, work through to the root cause of said problem and then creativley work through the logic to a solution they are building life skills that will be with them forever.If your concern is that chess (and other strategic games) won't build life skills you are wrong.Chess provides building blocks to improved understanding of all situations within your life as one learns to consider ALL the factors involved in a problem.Will chess assure one will see all the factors in problem?Subject: RE: Suggest a new
