Entered Hell October 12, 1998.Why the name 2nd class citizen?Well, technically until we get the right to marry and file taxes as couples we are 2nd class citizens.Currently there are 1,138 federal benefits that GLBT people do not have.This does not include the hundreds of state benefits provided through marriage.The dissolution of a marriage requires a determination of property distribution, award of child custody and support and spousal support.Absent divorce, there is no uniform system for sorting out the ending of a relationship.Many married people are entitled to financial benefits relating to their spouses, such as disability, pension and social security benefits.With marriage, a couple has the right to be treated as an economic unit and to file joint tax returns (and pay the marriage penalty), and obtain joint health, home and auto insurance policies.When a spouse dies, there is no need to prove ownership of every item in the household for taxable purposes.And what about our children?As it stands our families live in constant fear that our children could be taken away, or in the event that a relationship ends, only one person could have custody of the child, leaving the other spouse with no rights and no recourse to the child they helped raise.In most states adoption, while allowed by gay couples, is limited to custody of only one partner.So as anyone can see we are indeed 2nd class citizens.The proposed constitutional amendment restricts marriage to a union between a man and a woman.All 10 Republicans voted for the measure, and all eight Democrats voted against it.Our time draws nigh folks, if this piece of trash gets passed it will forever cement our 2nd class citizenship in stone.Posted on: May 17, 2006Coming Soon!Are you a 2nd Class Citizen?
