The blocks of 52nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue were renowned in the mid 20th century for the abundance of jazz clubs and lively street life.The street was convenient to musicians playing on Broadway and the "legitimate" nightclubs and was also the site of a CBS studio.Musicians who played for others in the early evening played for themselves on 52nd Street.In its heyday from 1930 through 1960, 52nd Street clubs hosted such jazz legends as Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Louis Prima, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Fats Waller, Harry Gibson, and many more.Although musicians from all schools performed there, 52nd Street was central in the dissemination of bebop; in fact a tune called 52nd Street Theme by Thelonius Monk became a bebop anthem and jazz standard.Virtually every great jazz player and singer of the era performed at clubs such as The Onyx, the Downbeat, the Three Deuces, the Yacht Club, Jimmy Ryan's, and The Famous Door.Noted jazz disc jockey Symphony Sid frequently did live broadcasts from the street, making it famous across the country.Today, the street is full of banks, shops, and department stores and shows little trace of its jazz history."Swing Street" and the one west of there "W.Park Avenue, between 52nd Street and 53rd Street.It was designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in collaboration with the American Philip Johnson and was completed in 1958.The building, opened in 1965, was designed by Eero Saarinen.Italics indicate streets no longer in existence.This page was last modified on 24 January 2008, at 05:17.This article needs additional citations for verification.Please help improve this article by adding reliable references.Street is the sixth studio album by Billy Joel, released in 1978.The track "My Life" benefited from the exposure it received when producers of the situation comedy Bosom Buddies used the song (performed by a different singer) as its theme.Street also became, in 1982, the first album to ever be released on compact disc.All Music Guide credits Joel for expanding on the style of The Stranger, making it "more sophisticated and somewhat jazzy."Jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard guests on "Zanzibar."The title is a reference to the street that was one of New York City's jazz centers in the middle of the century.Joel's label was headquartered on 52nd Street (in the CBS Building) at the time of the album's release.Track listing
