and Nickelback, look no further than Chicago's Absentstar.Perhaps the band simply chose the most polished songs for the EP, and the album itself has more adventurous moments, but the pervasive OneCD Review: Live!The New York Times Company.I'd heard of the young band once before, 3 years ago when I interned at Sony Music in Santa Monica, California.So it was great to get a chance to see them on stage the other evening in New York.If you've never heard Absentstar, check them out.By the middle of the first song, you'll be singing the chorus.Maybe this had something to do with the repeated guitar riffs on the chorus that mellowed down into each verse, leaving you wanting to hear more.Absentstar is not a band that's that different from other hit acts on the radio, but their songs are ones that have a memorable choruses and catchy vocals.And that's pretty much what the band seems to be going for.Every song had something a little different but at the same time they all have the same kind of sound.Singer Derek Ingersoll's voice was absolutely incredible.With a great range and the ability to hit both high and low notes with ease, his soulful tone has just a hint of raspiness that gives each song a subtle edge.It's a voice that I could listen to over and over.Derek Ingersoll (vocals), Andy Dixon (guitars), Marshall Hanbury, Jr.Noel Arnim (bass), and Heath Hamilton (drums) came together as Absentstar in 2005.Gladfelter and recorded their debut album, To All That Buy In, that first year.In 2007, the label brought in producer Dan Wilson to record their sophomore effort, Sea
