Prior to the Ants, Adam Ant (real name Stuart Goddard) played bass in pub rock group Bazooka Joe, now primarily known as the band that headlined when the Sex Pistols played their first concert on November 6, 1975, at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.After witnessing this Adam immediately quit the band with the intention of forming his own, inspired by the Sex Pistols.Auditioning members for a new band the Ants eventually formed in early 1977 consisting of Lester Square (guitar), Andy Warren (bass guitar) and Paul Flanagan (drums).They played their first gig on May 5, 1977, at Muswell Hill.Early recordings
The band made their radio debut on the John Peel show on January 23, 1978.The following day they recorded Deutscher Girls and Plastic Surgery for the Jubilee soundtrack.The band struggled to find success or even a record deal until 1978 when they were signed to Decca and released their first single "Young Parisians" to confused reviews and little success.Apparently unable to satisfactorily market the band, the label soon let the band go.Many of their early recordings and demos would eventually surface on bootleg records.It would be this lineup that recorded their debut album.They also recorded three John Peel Sessions between 1978 and 1979 which were released in 2001 on The Complete Radio 1 Sessions.Dirk Wears White Sox
Late 1979 saw the release of their debut album Dirk Wears White Sox (1979, Do It Records).Lyrically it attempted to address subjects such as fetishism, historical figures like Adolf Hitler, John F.Kennedy and Cleopatra as well as art history.It gained a cult following, rather than commercial success, leading a frustrated Adam to hire Malcolm McLaren (manager of the Sex Pistols) in the hope of more widespread recognition.Kings of the Wild Frontier

After the split, Ant went solo, taking his songwriting partner Pirroni with him.In 1983 Ant worked with Phil Collins and Richard James Burgess on the Strip album which was recorded at Polar Studios in Stockholm.In 1985, he worked with veteran producer Tony Visconti on his third solo album, Vive Le Rock.He chose his new single, "Vive le Rock."He spent three months in England on stage starring in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr.He also appeared on American television shows, notably The Equalizer, Sledge Hammer!He began taking roles in films such as Nomads and Slamdance.For reasons unknown, however, this album remains unreleased.He also acquired a stalker, which placed him under great stress.Ant was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.His erratic behaviour led to Graham to decided to end their relationship.The title track was a successful single, as was a tour of the U.While Ant and his group (which retained longtime guitarist Pirroni) played in smaller venues than they had played in the 1980s, the houses were often packed with enthusiastic fans.Adam and the Ants' hits during the '90s, including Elastica, Sugar Ray, Nine Inch Nails, Superchunk and Robbie Williams.Antbox, a retrospective box set spanning Ant's career from the late 1970s through the 1990s, was released in late 2000.The box set included 66 tracks on three CDs, and quickly sold the initial 10,000 units.Since the 2002 incident, Ant has occasionally been featured in news stories surrounding potential projects and his medical condition.In 2004 and 2005, six "remastered" compact discs were released, spanning the years 1979 (Dirk) through 1985 (Vive Le Rock).The CDs feature previously unavailable songs, including demos and material culled from the "Ant vault."The project was greatly overseen by Marco Pirroni, and includes a written message from Adam Ant himself, circa 2005.It was stated on his website that he was writing new music for a new album titled Fist In The Skull.In September 2006, he launched his autobiography, Stand and Deliver.In September 2007 Adam released the paperback version of Stand and Deliver, updated with a new epilogue which covers the year between the release of the hardback and the paperback.He also performed live for the first time in 11 years at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London on 24 September 2007, where he read extracts from the book, told some stories not in the book, and performed acoustic versions of many of his songs, plus some cover versions to the packed theatre.BMG licenced to United
