Free magazine for Sony PSP and Nintendo DS...Free magazine for Sony PSP and Nintendo DS...Gamerzines, who have already launched free Xbox 360 and PC games magazines, have just published the...If you're looking to get your monster murder on, this is the game for it.The action is the strongest element of this game, which itself is packed full of high points.Solid State Records, in 2003.At this time, the band consisted of vocalist Michael Williams, guitarists...Solid State Records, in 2003.Danzig and Lamb of God later that year.Roadrunner, but eventually resurfaced in 2007 (after welcoming new bassist Chris Rye and drummer Ryan Folden, plus Brian Hodges' move to second guitar) with a new album, Get Damned, released by Century Media.Counselor, guide thyself: Greer gives Becky a sunny, nerdy optimism.ABC's Miss Guided is, then at least what it's trying to be.Played by Judy Greer (Arrested Development), guidance counselor Becky Freeley is, like Liz Lemon, a former (and sort of current) nerd, neurotic, likeable single professional trying to convince the world and herself of her coolness and confidence. But she has a greater challenge: pulling it off while surrounded by teenagers and carrying a cafeteria tray. The comedy has all the ingredients, and Greer is perfectly cast: she's instantly appealing, and makes Becky earnest, awkwardly eager to please, and as klutzily gawky as you can reasonably expect an attractive actress playing a nerd on network TV to be.The jokes in the pilot were broader and more obviously than I'd have hoped, but the big isssue is that the writers need to find the right balance for Becky.Liz Lemon might, say, go on a jihad against a love interest's girlfriend, or become paranoidly suspicious of a man who's interested in her, but even as she does it, she knows that she's losing it as well. But without the kind of balance that 30 Rock strikes, it's too easy to feel like you're simply laughing at Becky, where Miss Guided clearly wants you to laugh with her and root for her.For now, the show is funny and fresh enough to stick with, and Greer makes Becky appealing through the sheer force of her sunny optimism.Let's hope Becky's development stays arrested for a good long while.Forgot your username or password?Until then, it won't appear on the entry.July 2008Choose a day to view events. The Agony of the Ecstasy: Herbal High Products Get Media Attention.American Botanical CouncilThat unmatch'd form and figure of blown youth,Blasted with ecstasy: O!To have seen what I have seen, what I see! From the perspective of these writers, products like "herbal ecstacy(TM)" and Ultimate Xphoria(TM) are clearly out of place when one considers the positive, healthy role that herbs can and do play in modern society.Attempts to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation failed; he had apparently been dead already for several hours."Ultimate Brain Food" (Moore et al.Nimsger said that several of the men took 11 pills each, but Schlendorf "wanted to be careful" and took eight (Moore et al.An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was attributed to ingestion of Ultimate Xphoria. This product contains various herbal ingredients, the primary being ma huang or ephedra (Ephedra sinica), an herb that has been the subject of considerable controversy in the past few years.Blumenthal, Webb, and King, 1995; Blumenthal, 1996).These products make claims for heightened sexual awareness, producing a feeling of euphoria and even producing cosmic consciousness! On March 22, 1996, New York State Senator James W.OTC) drugs with ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, as Schedule II controlled substances (along with morphine, opium, poppy, and coca leaves). The proposed legislation acknowledged that "The experimental data also indicates that the real safety of ephedrine remains with the user who ultimately controls the dosage level."OTC drugs containing ephedra alkaloids or their salts (Wright, 1996b).On April 10 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers about the potential health risks of these products. Both the FDA advisory and the Times articles dealt with concerns over the appropriateness and safety of products being called "dietary supplements" which are blatantly intended to be used to produce a state of euphoria as replacements for illegal street drugs."Herbal ecstacy" and related products are sold in night clubs, by independent distributors and sometimes in health food stores and other retail outlets, particularly novelty and "head shops."National Medical Services Laboratory in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania told Prime Time that his analysis of the product Ultimate Xphoria, provided to him by CBS news, which was purchased at a retail store in New York, revealed the presence of 28 mg of ephedrine, 22.Thus, the total level of ephedra alkaloids per tablet was 50.FDA's expert advisory panel in October, 1995 (The 50.Officials of Alternative Health declined to be interviewed by HerbalGram. When asked by CBS correspondent Bob Arnott if FDA intended to move against these products, Zeller indicated that the agency would "move swiftly" against Ultimate Xphoria since a coroner's report received the previous day directly implicated the product in Peter Schlendorf's death. This is what FDA's own advisory panel had recommended in October 1995 (Blumenthal, 1996).At press time (June 6) FDA had not taken any action against this product although it is likely that the agency is working with Arizona authorities to coordinate possible action.According to Donaldson's report on Prime Time Live, Sean Shayan, CEO of the Los Angeles company that manufactures "herbal ecstacy," said that his firm has sold 15 million units of the product. The New York Times article was followed by an editorial on the OpEd page on Saturday, April 13 in which the editors suggested that Congress review its policy that places on the FDA the burden of proof that a dietary supplement is unsafe (Anon, 1996).However, in lobbying for this change in DSHEA, the supplement industry did not intend for herb ingredients to be used as substitutes for illegal drug products, as in the present situation. On Wednesday, April 17, one week after the original article, the New York Times published an article by Bruce Lambert, a staffer in Long Island who covers local news. The article, which appeared on page B1, the first page of the Metro section, dealt with Nassau County (Long Island) officials' attempts to ban sales of products containing ma huang (Lambert 1996a)Also on April 17, the Florida Agriculture Commissioner announced the banning of products high in ephedrine that were marketed for purposes akin to street drugs. Then, on Friday, April 19, the Los Angeles Times ran an article attempting to summarize the issue to date."We're selling a dream," he is quoted as saying. On Sunday, April 21 the New York Times published another article on this subject by staff writer Gina Kolata.Kolata refers to FDA's statement to her that under the current provisions of the DSHEA the FDA could not prevent the sale of the poisonous herb hemlock (Conium maculatum) onto the marketplace and the agency could not act until after "the bodies piled up" (Kolata, 1996).This incredible piece of journalism was so erroneous that it prompted a number of letters from industry and scientific experts, including one from HerbalGram's editor.New York Times attempting to clarify some of the legal and regulatory issues that had been misreported in the Times. The letter was not printed by the Times, but a complete text is presented on page 23.On Monday, April 29, Newsweek published a cover story "The Natural Drug Culture."The American Botanical Council was contacted by at least four Newsweek reporters to gather information on this story, including data on other herbs that may present public safety concerns plus information on possible interactions of herbs with conventional pharmaceutical drugs.Ultimate Xphoria, and "others who market similar products," according to Harvey Weitz, the attorney representing the family. When asked about the unusually large monetary damages being sought in the suit, Weitz is quoted as saying, "It is really to take all the profit out of this business. We're doing it in the hope we can drive these people out of business."On May 5 CNN's "Sunday Morning" news magazine devoted over 16 minutes to the subject.Substance Abuse Clinic at Columbia University School of Medicine and this author.McNamara, wrote to Loren Israelsen, Executive Director of the Utah Natural Products Alliance, indicating the specific areas of both the DSHEA and the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act where FDA has adequate authority to protect consumers by removing unsafe or unsubstantiated products from the marketplace (McNamara, 1996)."Lethal But Legal") reviewing the Schlendorf case and quoting Shayan as saying that the adverse publicity for his product "ecstacy" (not associated the Schlendorf death) helped increase Shayan's sales by 25 percent."If the FDA ever goes out of business," he is quoted, "we'd like to hire them here for PR."Amato (R), introduced a bill into the U.Senate to " control herbal street drugs".THE AUTOPSY REPORT Schelndorf's autopsy was conducted by Marie A.District Medical Examiner Office in Panama City, Florida.Manner of Death was listed as "Accident (Self ingestion of "Ultimate Xphoria").The autopsy also included toxicological analysis of Schlendorf's blood, liver and gastric area (performed by National Medical Services), showing that there were no alcohol levels in the blood, but varying levels of ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, phenylpropanolamine in the blood, liver and gastric; with additional detection of caffeine in blood and gastric; and propanol in gastric (Herrmann, 1996).The presence of the alkaloids ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are consistent with ingestion of the herb ma huang. However, as shown below, tests conducted by HerbalGram did not reveal the presence of norephedrine in Xphoria.HerbalGram had Schlendorf's autopsy reviewed by a respected consulting toxicologist, Thomas L.He concluded that the young man's enlarged heart may have been caused by chronic ingestion of either PPA or some similar stimulant."This death is not strictly the result of a single overdose," he told HerbalGram. However, some of the products are manufactured with characteristic symbols on each pill; for example, "herbal ecstacy" has a butterfly on each blue or red tablet.Encyclopedia of Common Natural Ingredients Used in Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics, about some of the questionable ingredients and labeling in "herbal ecstacy."The Florida action does not ban the sale of ma huang or ephedrine but merely those products that make claims of "euphoria, increased sexual sensations, heightened awareness or increased energy."Florida Agriculture Commissioner Bob Crawford has urged other states to take similar action (Florida Department of Agriculture and Conservation Service, 1996).The Florida ban is the first of its kind in the U.Meanwhile, a bill introduced in the U.Congress on May 23 by Sen.The Senator noted that in doing so he is not contradicting DSHEA; that these products (i.Peter Schlendorf appears to have become a political football being used by the FDA to undermine DSHEA.Contrary to its public statements, FDA has adequate authority to protect the public and regulate products like Ultimate Xphoria.FDA has yet to act upon. It's too bad that the herbal agenda has to was a tough call, but ultimately, the Wrath of Raditch came down upon...Yick Yu, for copying Stephanie's papers. The Degrassi universe is immense, and I've only explored a small corner of it.Okay, it's Canadian television, but still! That's longer than MTV stopped showing music videos! That's longer than Saturday Night Live stopped being funny! However, by around the second disc, the show settles down to focus on a core group of kids, many of whom would go on to appear on Junior High, like Neil Hope (who plays Griff on Kids, and Wheels on DJH), Sarah Charlesworth (Casey on Kids, and VP Susie Rivera on DJH), Anais Granofsky (Karen on Kids, and Worldly Loosey on DJH) and of course, Stacie Mistysyn (Lisa on Kids and Caitlin on DJH).Rachel Blanchard (mostly famous for 7th Heaven and the UPN series based on Clueless) also shows up in a few episodes. You really don't expect them to have to deal much with sex, drugs, pregnancy, abortion, HIV, and all of the other crazy shit that comes along on the later shows. But if you like Degrassi, it's worth it to see the seeds of the franchise being planted, and it's good for a few unintentional chuckles, at least. And then, I swear, literally two episodes later, her family moves back to Degrassi Street. And so it began: a symbiotic relationship between actress and franchise that would last for decades.Well, I've digressed (and obsessed) enough for now, so I'll save my thoughts on Degrassi: The Next Generation for the next recap. But, as we've already seen, they're all very special episodes dealing with touchy subjects. So I won't even tell you what this episode's touchy subject will be.Let's see how long it takes you to figure it out.Enter Ricky's dad, a plain white guy with insanely poofy hair. And going by lots of photographic evidence, particularly on this website, it was very acceptable at some point in time, but I can't tell you why.Who taught you how to read?"He angrily asks if "Frank" gave it to him, and if "Frank" has been in here."Frank" person is, but he sounds like a real asshole.Ricky says he "took back some bottles", causing Dad to fume and seethe. It seems to me like Dad has a slight anger management problem, but what do you think, readers? He tells his son that money doesn't grow on trees, and that they don't have money to waste on "garbage" like motorcycle magazines. And can you really "get out of town" for the amount of money you get from recycling bottles?Bait the guy who's already teetering on the edge of violent rage, why don't you?So, just in case you couldn't figure it out, this is probably not the first time this has happened in the Ricky Household. Can you guess what the core issue of this week's Very Special Episode will be?If you don't guess, you'll be sorry, you little punk! And I recognize the character of Ricky, even though he hasn't really gotten any dialogue before now, because of his random appearances as an extra in earlier episodes. Not to mention, his prominence in the clips shown in the opening credits.Which looks really strange, once you find out he only ended up appearing in six episodes of this series. But why is it only male designers who press women into wooden bustiers and metal crinolines? My dream is to save women from nature. And women seem prepared to conform to deformity in the name of fashion. After a long struggle, U.Deeper cuts to come in U.
