A small finish to the Victorian week was accompanied by freshening southerly winds.Wind strengths near the buoy have been relatively light all day, which correlates nicely with this morning's satellite observations, so there's no local source for today's rise in swell. This data further validates the above claim, as the Pt Nepean buoy is more likely to pick up the westerly swell than Cape Sorell, due to its more northern latitude.NE winds to create a fun day of waves to kick start the long weekend. These favourable conditions will be related to a large high in the Tasman and an approaching cutoff low that developed immediately west from Perth on Thursday. However, the westerly swell won't be very strong nor have any great size, and the swell direction will severely restrict wave heights along the Surf Coast. There probably won't be enough size for Western Port, Flinders or Cat Bay, so expect high numbers in the water across the popular beaches.Keep an eye out for the afternoon sea breeze as this may spoil conditions a little.Tasman Sea (en route to Fiji), and Victoria will probably just pick the outer bands of energy sweeping across the coast during the afternoon.Cape Sorell will be our most useful tool on Sunday, as it'll provide us with advance warning of the swell, much more so than what we see under west or southwest swell directions. The swell should then make its way into Bass Strait during the middle of the day, providing a lift in coastal wave heights well after lunch, ahead of a peak in towards dusk.As discussed above, the rapid development of this low right on the edge of the swell window reduces the confidence level regarding wave heights, but 3ft+ is still a reasonable ball park figure for the Surf Coast by the end of the day.SW swells, so keep this in mind when scouting out a break on Sunday.NE and afternoon sea breezes.SW swell, generated by strong frontal activity in our far swell window earlier this week.Surf Coast, and a better level of quality east of Melbourne. This swell may ease a little into the weekend, but should fluctuate somewhere in this ball park range for another day or so (ie, fun waves in Torquay). The super long term outlook is quite exciting for Victorian surfers, with the Southern Ocean expected to become quite active. At this stage, a blocking high east of the continent is expected to keep these systems quite some distance from the mainland, and we may see two or three similar frontal patterns follow behind, in association with an amplifying upper level long wave trough SW of Western Australia.Although it's early days just now, all available signs are pointing towards an extended run of sizeable Southern Ocean groundswell, the first pulse of energy arriving early in the following week, possibly fluctuating in the moderate to large size range throughout the remainder of the week.More on this in Monday's update.Probably too small for Western Port, Flinders or Cat Bay though.Mon: clean early but easing in size.
