This is former Sun Ra trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah's 10th date as a leader and he is using the talents of different members of previous projects.Ahmed always chooses to cover a diverse array of jazz composers and on this one he covers Ornette Coleman, Frank Lowe, Thelonius Monk, Gigi Gryce, Sun Ra, as well as a couple of originals.Gigi Gryce's "Sans Souci" opens and is pretty straight ahead, laid back and kinda nice, with Andrei playing with his hands on the drums adding a nice touch.The violin, bari sax and trumpet frontline sound righteous as they play that universally sad melody.All three frontline players take long, inspired solos, pouring it out from their hearts and souls.It is another immensely stirring, melancholy sorta ballad with touching solos from Billy Bang and Ahmed on muted trumpet.Both Sun Ra songs, "Tapestry" and "Fate in a Pleasant Mood" are fine late night mood pieces with some groovy Sun Ra like vocals by Ahmed.Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah was a part of
that scene, as was violinist Billy Bang, whose sound

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Ahmed Abdullah is a trumpeter, composer, arranger, educator, organizer and bandleader who has led his own ensembles since 1972.For the last thirty years, Ahmed has spent his time performing in various capacities while developing his many talents.Ahmed worked for Carnegie Hall's Education Department and the Brookyln Philharmonic as a performing and teaching artist for a number of years.Strange Celestial Road (Traveling the Spaceways) .Since then, he has introduced many of the adventurous musicians of the Seventies' Loft Movement to this venue with great success.In the last year Abdullah's CD releases have included NAM Live at the Vision Festival on Clean Feed Records, AA's Dispersions of the Spirit of Ra, Traveling the Spaceways on Planet Arts Recordings and AA's Ebonic Tones Tara's Song on Tum Records, all of which can be purchased from this website.
