By the 1940s and 1950s, air travel had become safer and more convenient.The first president to fly in an aircraft while in office was Franklin D.Roosevelt, who traveled on a Boeing 314 flying boat to the 1943 Casablanca Conference on the progress of World War II.Battle of the Atlantic made air travel the preferred method of transportation.This aircraft was nicknamed the Sacred Cow and included a sleeping area, radio telephone, and retractable elevator for Roosevelt's wheelchair.It carried the president to several important events, most notably the Yalta Conference.After Roosevelt died in spring 1945, Vice President Harry S Truman became the President.Liftmaster, calling it the Independence, possibly in reference to President Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri.The presidential call sign was established for security purposes during the administration of Dwight D.The change stemmed from a 1953 incident where an Eastern Airlines commercial flight (8610) had the same call sign as a flight the president was on (Air Force 8610).These aircraft were named Columbine II and Columbine III by Mamie Eisenhower after the columbine, the official state flower of Colorado, her adopted home state.Two Aero Commanders were also added to the fleet and earned the distinction of being the smallest Air Force Ones ever.Air Force One usually does not have fighter aircraft to escort the presidential aircraft over the United States, but it does occur.On an unscheduled stop in San Antonio, Texas, in January 2006, four fighters were seen in close coverage, within a few meters, two below Air Force One's fuselage, and one under each wing.Loewy met with the president, and recorded that his earliest research on the project took him to the National Archives where he looked at the first printed copy of the United States Declaration of Independence, and saw the country's name set widely spaced and in upper case in a typeface called Caslon.The presidential seal was added to both sides of the fuselage near the nose, a large American flag was painted on the tail, and the sides of the aircraft read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.The 707 markings were adapted for the larger 747 Air Force One in 1989.Richard Nixon was the first president to use this, and the aircraft would continue serving every president since, until it too was replaced by two 747 jumbo jets (SAM 28000 and 29000) in 1990.SAM 27000 was decommissioned in 2001 by President George W.Bush, flown to San Bernardino International Airport in California, and later driven in pieces to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley where it was reassembled and is currently on permanent display.Delays were experienced to allow for additional work to protect the aircraft from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) effects.Bush was interrupted at Emma E.Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, after the attack on the World Trade Center South Tower in New York City.Bradenton International Airport to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and then to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska before returning to Washington.The next day, officials at the White House and the Justice Department explained that President Bush did this because there was "specific and credible information that the White House and Air Force One were also intended targets."It was explained by his staff that this was done in order to conserve fuel by not having to fly the usual Boeing 707 Air Force aircraft.On 8 March 2000, President Clinton flew to Pakistan aboard an unmarked Gulfstream III while another aircraft with the call sign "Air Force One" flew on the same route a few minutes later.This diversion was reported by several U.The Boeing 707 that served as Air Force One from the Nixon years to the current George Bush administration (SAM 27000) is on display in Simi Valley, California at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.The Library's Air Force One Pavilion was opened to the public on 24 October 2005.Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.Typically, it is a chartered Alitalia jet; William H.Air Force One is a 1997 action film starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Glenn Close.It was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and released on July 25.The appeal failed and Columbia decided to just release the film as an R.With his visit to Moscow complete, the President is now on his way home to Washington, D.The flight crew declare an emergency and prepare to land at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.At the last moment, Marshall flees the escape pod and retreats to the baggage deck.The terrorists call the Vice President, demand the release of General Radek, and threaten to begin executing hostages.National Security Advisor Doherty is executed when Bennett calls to report that Russian President Petrov will not release Radek (he tells Bennett he would only do so to save President Marshall).Marshall manages to covertly order an attack on Air Force One so he can subdue the terrorist.The plan works, and Marshall attempts a fuel dump to land the plane.Recognizing the presence of someone on the baggage deck (the terrorists assume him to be a Secret Service agent), Korshunov executes Deputy Press Secretary Melanie Mitchell in an effort to force Marshall's surrender.While two of the terrorists attempt to restore the fuel controls, Marshall slips by and takes another terrorist hostage, using his keys to free the hostages.Korshunov forces the President to call Petrov to secure Radek's release.As Radek's release is prepared, Marshall and the hostages free themselves and kill the remaining terrorists, but Korshunov captures Grace and also shoots Chief of Staff Shepard and flees to the parachute ramp.In a vicious fight, Marshall manages to eject Korshunov from the aircraft by deploying his parachute while a static line is wound around his neck.Marshall calls Petrov before Radek's release, and prison guards kill the former general as he flees.Kazakh MiG fighter jets loyal to Radek reach Air Force One and inflict serious damage on its engines and maneuvering mechanisms.Before the evacuation can be completed, the plane begins a rapid descent with Marshall, Gibbs, Major Caldwell, and a rescuer.Marshall insists on rescuing his family and then a wounded Shepard before he evacuates the plane.Once it is the President's turn to leave, Gibbs drops all pretense, killing Caldwell and the jumper.Marshall fights with Gibbs, and escapes on the ropeline, leaving a screaming Gibbs aboard the 747, which crashes into the Caspian Sea.Production
