For the comedian, see Bob Marley (comedian).May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist. He is the most widely known performer of reggae music.Marley is best known for his reggae songs, which include the hits "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", and "One Love".Early life and career man's side nor the white man's side.Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white. He gained a reputation for his physical strength, which earned him the nickname "Tuff Gong".Marley became friends with Neville "Bunny" Livingston (later known as Bunny Wailer), with whom he started to play music. He left school at the age of 14 and started as an apprentice at a local welder's shop.It was at a jam session with Higgs and Livingston that Marley met Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh), who had similar musical ambitions. In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, "Judge Not" and "One Cup of Coffee", with local music producer Leslie Kong.Songs of Freedom, a posthumous collection of Marley's work.By 1966, Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith had left The Wailers, leaving the core trio of Marley, Livingston, and McIntosh. The Wailers' first album, Catch A Fire, was released worldwide in 1973, and sold well.It was followed a year later by Burnin', which included the songs "Get Up, Stand Up" and "I Shot The Sheriff".Eric Clapton made a hit cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" in 1974, raising Marley's international profile. The Wailers broke up in 1974 with each of the three main members going on to pursue solo careers.McIntosh began recording under the name Peter Tosh, and Livingston continued as Bunny Wailer. In December 1976, two days before "Smile Jamaica", a free concert organized by the Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley in an attempt to ease tension between two warring political groups, Marley, his wife, and manager Don Taylor were wounded in an assault by unknown gunmen inside Marley's home.Taylor and Marley's wife sustained serious injuries, but later made full recoveries.Bob Marley received serious injuries in the chest and arm.The shooting was thought to have been politically motivated, as many felt the concert was really a support rally for Manley.Nonetheless, the concert proceeded, and an injured Marley performed as scheduled. It was here that he was arrested and received a conviction for possession of a small quantity of cannabis while traveling in London.Babylon by Bus, a double live album with 13 tracks, was released in 1978 to critical acclaim. In early 1980, he was invited to perform at the April 17 celebration of Zimbabwe's Independence Day.Confrontation, released posthumously in 1983, contained unreleased material recorded during Marley's lifetime, including the hit "Buffalo Soldier" and new mixes of singles previously only available in Jamaica.Marley may have seen medical doctors as samfai (tricksters, deceivers).True to this belief Marley went against all surgical possibilities and sought out other means that would not break his religious beliefs.Bob Marley played his final concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 23, 1980.The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were "Money can't buy life."Marley received a state funeral in Jamaica, which combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. He was buried in a crypt near his birthplace with his Gibson Les Paul, a soccer ball, a fat Cannabis bud, a bong, a ring that he wore every day that was given to him by the Prince Asfa Wossen of Ethiopia (eldest son of HIM), and a Bible. The Wailers' Exodus as the greatest album give her a spare album (Uprising) that I by accident had bought two copies of, she had told me about a strange dream she had had. When she finally got there she looked up and saw that it was not Bob but the Pope who was standing there and that everybody was excited about. She was very disappointed and couldn't understand why everyone cared about the pope as she wanted to see Bob instead. That day both she and I were so in mourning for Bob that we could not understand the excitement about that attempted assassination.Bob Marley has never just meant one kind of music to me but a way of life. One separate entities. So, it is worth recalling the distinctions that existed at the times these entities performed and recorded. The Wailers, formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1963, was a vocal group consisting of Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Livingston, Bob Marley, Peter McIntosh, and Cherry Smith; they were called variously the Teenagers, the Wailing Rudeboys, the Wailing Wailers, and finally the Wailers. These albums attracted critical attention but did not chart at first.By the time of Natty Dread (1974), the original group had split, with McIntosh (later billed as Peter Tosh) and Livingston (later billed as Bunny Wailer) leaving. The breakthrough for this group was their appearance at the Lyceum in London on July 18, 1975.The show was recorded and quickly released on LP as Live!Marley and his reggae music became an international sensation. The success of Eric Clapton's cover of "I Shot the Sheriff," a Marley song from Burnin', in the summer of 1974, had done much to popularize reggae (the original version made the U.Marley himself now achieved stardom as a performer."No Woman, No Cry," a song originally heard on Natty Dread, reached the U.With that, both Natty Dread and Live!Natty Dread had charted in May; it was followed by Burnin' and Catch a Fire in the fall.Wailers reached their commercial apex in the U.Threes, keyboard player Tyrone Downie, percussionist Alvin "Seeco" Patterson, rhythm guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, and lead guitarist Donald Kinsey.LP "Punky Reggae Party") and became their first Top Ten album in Great Britain.Threes, Downie, Patterson, and lead guitarist Julian (Junior) Marvin."Satisfy My Soul," which reached the Top 40.But the story was far different in the U.Black radio seemed to have decided that the band did not fit formats dominated by disco, while pop radio was increasingly attracted to new wave sounds and treated reggae as a fad that had passed.Wailers studio album, Survival, was released in October 1979.It reached the Top 20 in the U."So Much Trouble in the World" reaching the charts, but in the U.Uprising, released in June 1980 and prefaced by the propulsive single "Could You Be Loved," gave Marley a commercial rebound.Uprising might have done better domestically if Marley had not become ill shortly after its release and been forced to cancel his tour promoting it after only a few dates.Even before his death, the back catalog began to sell, with a British single release of "Three Little Birds" from Exodus reaching the Top 20 in the fall of 1980.Shortly after Marley's death, "No Woman, No Cry" was reissued and reached the U.Wailers, released in the U.Marley's death, in May 1984, and in August in the U.American chart statistics were not as spectacular, but the album became a perennial seller; before the end of the century, it had been certified for sales of ten million copies. Its success, in turn, stimulated sales of the Marley catalog in the U.Wailers, as was the 1999 chart album of newly created duets Chant Down Babylon.Wailers (indeed, the initial U.Wailers can refer to any music featuring Marley and made in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, though careful listeners will insist that the credit should apply only to the recordings and performances of Marley and his regular backup group from the breakup of the original Wailers trio in 1974 to Marley's death in 1981.Threes (Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley, and Judy Mowatt). The breakthrough for this group was their appearance at the Lyceum in London on July 18, 1975.Marley and his reggae music became an
