Bullit biography, Bullit discography

Bullitt is a 1968 police thriller film starring Steve McQueen. The story was adapted for the screen by Alan Trustman and Harry Kleiner, based on the novel titled Mute Witness (1963) by Robert L.Keller) and was nominated for Best Sound.Writers Trustman and Kleiner won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay.San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase sequences in movie history. The scene had Bullitt in a dark "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT "Bullitt Mustang," which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note."Bullitt Mustang" is being produced for the 2008 model year.In 2007, Bullitt was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dirty Harry and The French Connection, both released in 1971.However, San Francisco's most famous landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge, was not a part of the chase scene because the city's film commission refused to allow the filmmakers to close the bridge and film there.Mafia cronies and two attempts were made on his life before he left for San Francisco.Chalmers has the San Francisco Police Department place Johnny Ross (Felice Orlandi) in protective custody for the weekend and requests that the detective unit headed by Lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) be assigned to guard him.Hotel Daniels, a cheap flophouse near an overhead freeway during separate shifts. Before Ross enters the hotel, he makes several phone calls.Stanton calls Bullitt at home, and is told not to let them in; Bullitt surmises that Chalmers would not show up at one in the morning.Mike and Phil (played by stunt driver Bill Hickman), then burst into the room and Mike shoots Inspector Stanton in the leg with a shotgun blast.Stanton and Ross are both rushed to the hospital.Bullitt wants to get to the bottom of the case and catch who shot them, as well as the Mafia boss who ordered the hit.Chalmers is angered and blames Bullitt, threatening to ruin his career if Ross dies.Furthermore, Chalmers does not care about Bullitt's injured partner or the identities of the hitmen; he is only interested in the hearings that will launch his national political career.Chalmers attempts to shift the blame away from himself and make a patsy out of Bullitt and the San Francisco Police Department. The gunman, Mike, then appears at the hospital to finish Ross off, but is discovered and is chased by Bullitt through stairwells and the physical therapy rooms. After Mike escapes, Bullitt returns to discover Ross has died from his wounds.Bullitt suppresses news of the death, has Doctor Willard (Georg Stanford Brown) misplace the chart and has the body placed in the morgue under a John Doe identity.Scene of the car chase in Bullitt.Chalmers arrives at the hospital Sunday morning and is angered that Ross has disappeared, and is further incensed when he and his police minder Captain Baker (Norman Fell) phone Bullitt only to be blown off.Chalmers increases pressure on Bullitt Sunday morning by serving his boss, Captain Bennett (Simon Oakland), with a writ of habeas corpus to produce the witness as Bennett arrives at church with his family.Bullitt reconstructs Ross's movements with the cabbie (an early role for Robert Duvall) who brought him into the city, and investigates the phone calls made by Ross. With the hearing the next day, Bullitt suspects that this dead mobster may not be who he seems.Bullitt in his Ford Mustang and thus discover the fate of Ross, but Bullitt evades them, and as they search he appears behind their car, having turned the tables and now following them.Smoke billowing from its rear tires, the Charger hurtles uphill and Bullitt likewise powers around the corner, giving chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco and the outlying highways.Mike pulls out a Winchester Model 1897 shotgun and fires a few rounds at Bullitt.Bullitt tries to force the Charger off the road, the vehicles banging door against door, but to no avail. The chase comes to a climactic end after Mike once again shoots at Bullitt's car with the shotgun.Bullitt once again tries to force the car off the road and this time Phil loses control of the car, careening off the highway where they crash into a gas station, the station exploding and both men burning to death.Back at the police station, Bullitt is angrily interrogated by Captains Baker and Bennett but still has until Monday morning to follow his remaining lead.He needs a car, but one is not available at the station, so his architect girlfriend, Cathy (played by Bisset), drives him to the suburban motel, where he discovers the woman has been murdered via strangulation.Bullitt sees her and they leave. The two pull over to the side of a busy freeway and talk about Frank's cool attitude about the homicide investigation. She has trouble accepting his job, the true nature of police work, and Bullitt's apparent numbness to the horrors he sees on the job.Bullitt and Delgetti check the luggage of the victim, which has arrived at the police evidence office. The two rifle through the luggage and find that all the clothing and toiletries are new and unused.Bullitt then tells Delgetti to call immigration in Chicago and have them send over Renicks's passport application on what looks like one of the first facsimile machines, complete with an acoustic coupler modem, while he requests a fingerprint check. At this point, Chalmers arrives at the police station and demands Bullitt sign an official statement acknowledging that Ross died while in his custody.Bullitt ignores Chalmer's request until he receives a copy of the passport photos, the entire group waiting patiently while the fax machine slowly and very loudly prints. When it completes they examine the print, complete with sharp image of the suspect, whereupon Chalmers realizes that they have been conned while Bullitt calmly points this out to him.The man who was murdered was not Johnny Ross, but Dorothy's husband, Albert Renick, a used car salesman from Chicago with no Mafia connections.Bullitt has to stop Ross before he can make his getaway on the flight to Rome as Albert Renick.Having arrived at the airport with Delgetti, Chalmers encounters Bullitt and makes him an offer that will help both their careers, but Bullitt tells Chalmers he wants no part of it.Bullitt enters the plane as the passengers are coming off and sees the real Johnny Ross (played by Pat Renella).Bullitt pursues Ross on foot across the runways as airliners take off around them.On two occasions Ross takes a few shots at Bullitt who does not return fire.Ross runs back to the terminal with Bullitt in pursuit.Bullitt narrowly avoids being crushed by a plane.Inside the terminal, Ross tries to blend into the crowd but Bullitt spots him. When Delgetti arrives near the scene with an armed airport security guard, Bullitt finally corners Ross at a glass doorway leading to curbside taxi pickup; Ross kills another security guard (not the one with Delgetti) in order to escape, but is blocked by the locked electronic eye automatic doors at both ends of the vestibule.Realizing he is trapped, he turns on Bullitt, who shoots him (the first and only time Bullitt returned fire in the whole movie). The movie ends with Bullitt returning home to find Cathy asleep.McQueen spinning out his tires in Bullitt's car chase scene. The famous chase sequence from Bullitt was voted the best car chase in film history in a poll of 5,500 British film enthusiasts. Both Mustangs were owned by Ford Motor Company and were part of a promotional loan agreement with Warner Bros..Carey Loftin, had famed stuntman and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins do most of the risky stunts in the Mustang (Ekins also doubled for McQueen in one sequence of The Great Escape, in which McQueen's character jumps over a barbed wire fence on a motorcycle).During the chase scene, the Charger loses six hubcaps and has different ones missing at different times. The Charger also crashes into the camera in one scene and the damaged front fender is noticeable in later scenes. The production company was denied permission to film on the Golden Gate Bridge. This is a result of the same section of street being shot from multiple angles simultaneously, with some angles being used to give the impression of the chase proceeding down a different street.Of the two Mustangs, one was scrapped after filming due to liability concerns and the surviving backup car was sold to an employee of Warner Brothers' editing department. In Futurama, a car chase taking place in San Francisco pays homage by placing green VWs into each and every cut shot, more than in the original. This section is a candidate to be copied to Wikiquote using the Transwiki process.Frank Bullitt: "You believe what you want.Walter Chalmers: "Come on, now.We both know how careers are made.Integrity is something you sell the public."Bullitt: "You sell whatever you want, but don't sell it here tonight."Get the hell out of here, now."Captain Bennett: "He let the killers in himself?Bullitt: "I'm waiting to ask him."Bennett: "What about the setup? What do you make of that?"Bullitt: "Shotgun and a backup man, professionals."Chalmers: "I do not choose to have people accuse me of false promises for the sake of cheap sensationalism, or to be compromised by your lieutenant."Bullitt: "He was the man who was shot at the Hotel Daniels. This page was last modified 20:51, 6 February 2008.All text is Filmed!"BULLITT" is a trademark of Warner Bros.Still captures from the Bullitt DVD are copyright Warner Bros. The Steve McQueen movie Bullitt was filmed in and around San Francisco in late April 1968.Bullitt is an excellent film. The production company used two Mustangs and two Dodge Chargers to film the chase scenes. The Mustangs were driven by Bud Elkins, Carey Loftin, and McQueen. The camera car, built upon a Corvette chassis, was driven by Pat Houstis. In the film, Bullitt lived at 1153 Taylor Street, at the corner of Clay Street (thanks to Brian Hollins for identifying the address). Here is the houseas it appeared in the movie, and as it appeared in August of 1999.In September of 2002 the house had been repainted gray. This is a view of Bullit's house looking down Clay Street in 1968 and again in 2002.Frank Bullitt shopped at a market at 1199 Clay Street, directly across the street from his house. The market is still there (along with the fire alarm box), although the name has changed. One of the film's scenic location shots (there are many) is of a house at 2700 Vallejo Street, at the corner of Vallejo and Divisadero in the Pacific Heights section of the city.In the film the house is the home of Walter Chalmers, a smarmy bureaucrat who requests the services of Detective Lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQeen) to guard a state's witness, one Johnny Ross. The trees have grown quite a bit. Here it is on a sunny day.Bullitt and his partners, Delgetti (played by Don Gordon), and Carl Stanton (played by Carl Reindel) drive to the Hotel Daniels at 226 Embarcadero Road. The hotel, which was actually the Kennedy Hotel across from Pier 18 at Howard and Embarcadero, is no longer there. In its place is the new corporate headquarters for the Gap Inc.An elevated highway ran right outside the hotel's west side, but it too is gone. Here is one of the main entrance in 1968, and this is how that entrance appears in 2002.Another view from the DVD shows one of the hospital's original buildings.Chalmers confronts Bullitt's superior Captain Sam Bennett at Grace Cathedral, on California Street at Taylor Street. The building in the right portion of the frame is no longer there. You can see a gas station in the background.Meanwhile Frank Bullitt enlists the aid of a Sunshine Cab driver named "Weissberg" (played by Robert Duvall) to retrace Johnny Ross' movements when he arrived in San Francisco. In July 2002 the entrance to the Mark Hopkins was undergoing renovation.By September of 2002 it looked very different.Bullitt meets his informant, Eddie, at Enrico's Sidewalk Cafe (504 Broadway at Kearny Street) to find out who is after Johnny Ross. The place hadn't changed much as of August 1999.They stand in front of a club across the street from Enrico's at 501 Braodway called the "Galaxie" in the movie. It is now called the Black Cat, a restaurant.Weissberg returns Bullitt to the car wash at Bayshore near Marin. The lack of continuity is due to the logistics of filming in a working city. There are several basic locations from which the film crew operated and many shots were filmed at locations close to these areas. For example San Francisco General Hospital is close to the chase scenes filmed around 20th Street, Kansas Street, and Rhode Island Street, while Russian Hill served as the base for many of the chase scenes, with the Marina District only a short distance away.Potrero and Army streets in Bernal Heights. It then proceeds west on Army Street for a few blocks.Army at Precita (note the Pontiac and the lighting: here is the very next frame with a 1956 Dodge Coronet where the Pontiac was and different lighting), and here is Army and Precita in 2002 with the gas station still in operation but no longer a Phillips 66.Bullitt then makes an immediate right turn on York Street (here it is in 2002).Here is that view in 2002.It heads east on Filbert Street, with Coit Tower and Saints Peter and Paul Church visible in the center of the frame, at the corner of Taylor. This is a view looking east on Filbert Street in 2002.North Beach Playground (now named after Joe Dimaggio) through North Beach. Here is that view in 2002.Here is the same intersection in 2002.They continue on 20th Street and turn right heading north on Kansas.Once again the chase makes a gigantic leap back into the Russian Hill district. The Charger appears making a right turn onto Larkin Street (heading north) from Lombard (headed west). They continue for one block on Larkin. Here is that view in 2002.The crash itself can be seen in the movie from one camera angle but the shot from the second camera angle was was not used in the film.In a rather impressive demonstration of driving skill, Hickman continues east on Chestnut Street after the impact, seemingly unaffected. Here is the view from the first camera angle in 2002.Trees have completely obscured the view west.McQueen attempts to follow the Charger as it turns right on Chestnut and heads EAST.The Mustang understeers badly and he is forced to stop and back up in order to make the turn. Here is the corner of Larkin and Chestnut as it looked in July 2002.They continue south on Jones Street.Vallejo in 2002 (that's Alcatraz Island in the background) and in 1968.They continue north (downhill) on Taylor, passing Green Street, approaching Union Street, passing Union Street, and arriving at Filbert Street.Taylor above Green Street (where the Mustang oil pan bursts after a hard landing) looking south. This is the view looking back up on (south) Taylor above Filbert, where they cut in front of a yellow taxi cab and a Cadillac.During this portion of the chase, a green Volkswagen appears in the path of the Charger (and the Mustang) several times.Another car, a Pontiac Firebird, also appears in several sequences (once at Bimbo's 365 at Columbus and Chestnut, and again on Larkin Street at Francisco). The chase next winds up on Larkin Street (again) and this time the two cars pass Chestnut street and continue on Larkin. The cars head down Francisco past Polk Street (Galileo High School is visible behind the rearview mirror: It is still there). They continue north on Laguna, which turns into Marina Boulevard. It was located across Laguna Street from the Safeway parking lot but is no longer there. The entire area is a grassy hill within Fort Mason now part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area. The railroad tracks, which connected Fort Mason's piers with the Presidio of San Francisco, are gone.According to several printed sources, the chase was supposed to continue across the Golden gate bridge but the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District refused permission since even in 1968 it would have created a traffic nightmare, so the chase picks up again on University Street, which is all the way across the city to the south. Here is a shot from the film of the chase turning out of Olmstead Street passing the intersection of Mansell and University. Here is the intersection of Mansell and University in 2002.The chase picks up again on Market Street in Daly City headed eastbound past John F.In the scene where stunt driver Bud Elkins lays down a motorcycle, there are several radio towers visible on the hill in the background. Those towers are still there and this section looks very much as it did in the film.Chalmers confronts Frank Bullitt at the ambulance entrance of the Hall of Justice at Harriet Street and Ahern. Here is that view in 2002.This is just prior to the point at which Bullitt discovers that the man shot at the Hotel Daniels is not Johnny Ross but Albert Edward Renick a used car salesman from Detroit.Bullitt knows that Renick made a long distance phone call from a pay phone near Union Square and has traced the number to a Dorothy Simmons (actually Judith Renick, wife of Albert Renick) at the Thunderbolt Motel in San Mateo.Since his own car was damaged at the end of the chase, Bullitt gets his girlfriend Cathy, played by Jaqueline Bisset, to drive him to the Thunderbolt Motel in San Mateo, in her yellow Porsche 356B, to check on Judith Renick, aka Dorothy Simmons. Here is a photo of the motel as it appeared in July of 2002.Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard visible in the background."BULLITT" is a trademark of Warner Bros.Still captures from the Bullitt DVD are copyright Warner Bros.Quotes plot summaryplot synopsisplot keywordsAmazon.Plot
