IBM PCs and Apple computers.Sam Tramiel, a former Commodore president said in a 1989 interview "When I was at Commodore we were building 400,000 C64s a month for a couple of years."C64 emulators allow anyone with a modern computer to run these programs on their desktop.In January 1981, MOS Technology, Inc.II (graphics) and MOS Technology SID (audio), was completed in November 1981.Ultimax or alternatively the Commodore MAX Machine, engineered by Yash Terakura from Commodore Japan.The design, prototypes and some sample software was finished in time for the show, after the team had worked tirelessly over both Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends.C64 in order to fit into the current Commodore business products lineup which contained the P128 and the B256, both named by a letter and their respective memory size.The C64 made an impressive debut at the 1982 Winter Consumer Electronics Show, as recalled by Production Engineer David A.Winning the market war
The C64 faced a wide range of competing home computers at its introduction in August 1982.IBM PC and the Apple II.XL line and the transfer of their production to the Far East.But the PC and Apple II were very expandable with their internal expansion slots, a feature lacking in the 64.C64's launch in late 1982.Commodore sold the C64 not only through its network of authorized dealers, but also placed it on the shelves of department stores, discount stores, and toy stores.Since it had the ability to output composite video, the C64 did not require a specialized monitor, but could be plugged into a television set.Aggressive pricing of the C64 is considered to be a major catalyst in the video game crash of 1983.United States on the purchase of a C64 upon receipt of any video game console or computer.C64 so the consumer could send the computer to Commodore, collect the rebate, and pocket the difference.Timex Corporation departed the marketplace within a year.C64 also contributed significantly to the exit of Texas Instruments and other competitors from the field.However, Commodore committed what was perceived by critics and consumers as a major strategic error by making it incompatible with the C64.Sinclair ZX Spectrum and the Amstrad CPC 464.In the UK the Spectrum had been released a few months ahead of the C64, and selling for almost half the price, the Spectrum quickly became the market leader, Commodore had an uphill struggle against the Spectrum as it could not rely on undercutting the competition.The C64 would later rival the Spectrum in popularity in the latter half of the 1980s, eventually outliving the Spectrum when the latter was discontinued in December 1990.Despite a few attempts by Commodore to discontinue the C64 in favour of other, higher priced machines, constant demand made its discontinuation a hard task.Although demand for the C64 dropped off in the US by 1990, it continued to be popular in the UK and other European countries.In the end, economics, not obsolescence sealed the C64's fate.In March 1994, at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, Commodore announced that the C64 would be finally discontinued in 1995.Commodore claimed that the C64's disk drive was more expensive to manufacture than the C64 itself.Although Commodore had planned to discontinue the C64 by 1995, the company filed for bankruptcy a month later, in April 1994.The MAX was intended to be a game console with limited computing capability.It was discontinued months after its introduction, because of poor sales in Japan.In 1986, Commodore released the Commodore 64C (C64C) computer, which was functionally identical to the original, but whose exterior design was remodeled in the sleeker style of the Commodore 128 and other contemporary design trends.C64C's motherboard was made to orient the cartridge connector to a vertical position.This allowed cartridges to be inserted from above.The C64GS was another commercial failure for Commodore, and it was never released outside of Europe.In 1990, an advanced successor to the C64, the Commodore 65 (also known as the "C64DX"), was prototyped, but the project was cancelled by Commodore's chairman Irving Gould in 1991.The Amiga 600 was released in mid 1992, eventually taking the C65's place as the upgrade from the C64.TV game based on the C64 with 30 games built into ROM.Some users have installed 1541 floppy disk drives, hard drives, second joysticks and keyboards to these units, which give the DTV devices nearly all of the capabilities of a full Commodore 64.Due to its advanced graphics and sound, the C64 is often credited with starting the computer subculture known as the demoscene (see Commodore 64 demos).Atari ST and Commodore Amiga were released in 1985, however it still remained a very popular platform for demo coding up to the early 90s.By the turn of the millennium, it is still being actively used as a demo machine, especially for music (its sound chip even being used in special sound cards for PCs, and the Elektron SidStation synthesizer).Unfortunately, the differences between PAL and NTSC C64s caused compatibility problems between U.Canadian C64s and those from most other countries.ROM in and out of the processor's address space, and to operate the datasette tape recorder.The sound chip, SID, had three channels, each with its own ADSR envelope generator, and with several different waveforms, ring modulation and filter capabilities.It too, was very advanced for its time.Often the game music became a hit of its own among C64 users.Ben Daglish, Martin Galway and David Dunn among many others.Due to the chip's limitation to three channels, chords were played as arpeggios typically, coining the C64's characteristic lively sound.There are two versions of the SID chip.It was later replaced with the MOS Technology 8580 in 1987.C64C board (which uses 9V).The SID chip has a distinctive sound which retained a following of devotees.In 1999, Swedish company Elektron produced a SidStation synth module, built around the 6581 model SID chip (as opposed the superior 8580), using remaining stocks of the chip.Several bands use these devices in their music.Hardware revisions
Cost reduction was the driving force for hardware revisions to the C64's motherboard.An early C64 motherboard (Rev A PAL 1982).C64C motherboard ("C64E" Rev B PAL 1992).II was manufactured with 5 micrometre NMOS technology and was clocked at either 14.At such high clock rates, the chip generated a lot of heat, forcing MOS Technology to use a ceramic DIL package (called a "CERDIP").Most C64s in Europe shipped with a cardboard RF shield, coated with a layer of metal foil.The SID was manufactured using NMOS at 7 and in some areas 6 micrometres.II, these are extremely rare as the SID was encased in plastic when production started in early 1982.In 1986 Commodore released the last revision to the "classic" C64 motherboard.After the release of the C64C, MOS Technology began to reconfigure the C64's chipset to use HMOS technology.In 1987 Commodore released C64Cs with a totally redesigned motherboard commonly known as a "short board".The C64 used an external power supply.While this saved valuable space within the computer's case, the supply itself was barely adequate for the C64's power requirements.RAM expansions or Creative Micro Designs' peripherals.Of particular note, a C64 coupled with a RAM expansion or CMD SuperCPU required more power than the original Commodore power supply could provide.PC power unit can be modified to power a C64 and its disk drives.REU mostly intended for GEOS.MB REU for the C64 and C128, called the 1750 XL.MB was the biggest one officially made.Below are some examples of notable uses and users.These are the initials of Robert Russell and Bob Yannes, the two main engineers that created the C64.Using short commands (the first letter, then shift and the second) it was possible to make BASIC lines more than two display rows long.The C64 could not parse more than two display rows when the subsequent code was LISTed.Look at the Incredible History and Legacy of the Commodore Home Computers.The Anatomy of the Commodore 64."Design case history: the Commodore 64".Amiga Format, Issue 59, May 1994.Interview with Commodore president Max Toy", 1988.Chronology of the Commodore 64 Computer

The Commodore 64 (C64) is a home computer with 64 kilobytes of RAM that was popular in the 1980s.Commodore 64 Emulation
If you aren't sure what a c64 emulator is, basically its a program that you run on
your computer to make your computer act like a real c64.C64 but the emulators I would recommend are
CCS64, C64s, and VICE.Also, if you're using CCS64 or VICE, you might want to
take a look at Gamebase64 for a nice
frontend to use with them.This emulator is also updated fairly frequently,
and the best part is that its available for FREE.CCS64
CCS64 is a more CPU intensive emulator, and requires at least a Pentium processor
to run acceptably.C64s
C64s is an outdated emulator and you probably don't want to use it unless you have
a slow computer.C64s will run quite well on a 486, and should run in both DOS and Windows95.There are two 1541 emulation modes, FAST
and FULL emulation.You can purchase the registered version of C64s from
PHS.You can also download
the shareware version of

Pocket C64 is a new Commodore 64 emulator for use with Pocket PC's.Pocket PC (anyone kind enough to give me one?But the author
describes it as the following, "Stable Commodore 64 emulation on a Pocket PC, very fast,

The most use my Commodore 64 got was from playing video games.Some were quite good
but there were many that were horrible
and not worth the diskspace they took up.D64 format and should hopefully work on the various emulators,
although I can't guarantee that they do.They all work on a real c64 though, so as
always I recommend using a real C64 to play them.One additional thing I'll mention
is that since I'm from the US, all of the games on my website should work correctly
on an NTSC c64, they may not work on a PAL c64 though.You can weaken your enemy in a variety of ways
such as raiding their castle, jousting against them for their land, or just
taking their castle outright.When you take over an opponent's castle you also
gain any land that they owned.Occasionally you'll be called upon to rescue the
daughter of one of your allies, and if successful you win her hand in marriage.The
action sequences are very well done, like the jousting scene for example, and a fair
amount of strategy is needed to win the game.All of these qualities make this my

Hardball was released in 1985 by Accolade and was one of the very first
games I ever bought for the C64.The graphics were above average for the
typical baseball game but the gameplay had some serious flaws in it.How well a player batted was determined by where he was placed in
the batting lineup.Even with these drawbacks, it was still a fun game to
play and one of my favorites.It's the same game as
Hardball, except that it was hacked to add some more teams like the
Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and others.To download Hardball,
click here.Putt was released by Accolade and is my favorite miniature golf game
for the C64.The courses are well designed and it is a challenge to even
get par on a course.The game is very realistic in that it has the usual
miniature golf obstacles such as water hazards, moving obstacles such as
windmills, and it takes slope into account.If you're putting uphill then
you have to hit the ball with more force, and the opposite for putting
downhill.The only thing lacking from this game to make it truly realistic
is being able to hit the ball off of the course entirely.The main object of the game is to use three of the
characters to explore the mansion and rescue your friend Sandy from the
mad scientist and the meteor.This game has a nice
command system that allows you to point and click with the joystick, or mouse if you
have one, instead of using the keyboard.It also has multiple endings, depending on
which three characters you pick, so you can play the game more than once.To download Maniac Mansion,
click here.The main object of the game is to earn enough money
to save an orphanage from being closed.This copy of the
game was cracked by DSD and has a speedloader that GREATLY speeds up the loading
times.If you're using
C64s you'll want to
disable the speedloader.Impossible Mission
Impossible Mission was released by Epyx in 1984 and is one of my favorite c64
games of all time, and it could be argued that its the best c64 game ever produced.The basic plot was to defeat a mad scientist named Elvin by searching through all of
the rooms and gaining enough puzzle pieces to learn the password and stop him.In the checkerboard rooms you have to play back the musical notes
from lowest to highest note, and if you're successful, you'll win either a snooze or

The Commodore 64 was not only known for its great games, it also has the
capability of playing great music.The soundchip used in the C64 was the
SID chip and it allowed the C64 to produce much higher quality sound than
the other computers from that time period.The files below should include
everything you need to listen to classic C64 tunes on your PC.All of these are available from the
High Voltage Sid Collection along with tons of
others.If you like remixes of c64 tunes,
C64 Audio is a great place to download c64
music in midi and MP3 formats.Another good place to get c64 midi music is

Visit the Fairlight C64 Tool List for just
about every utility imaginable.This is the program that I use to transfer disks to and from my real c64, and it works
great.You'll need a sleightly modified XE1541 cable to use the program.If you get a runtime error when trying to run
Trans64, download a copy patched for 686's.This program is
used to decompress files with an .The opposite of the
above program.This program will convert a .D64 file into C64 zipcoded files with the four
numbered parts.This program is used to
decompress files with an .Program to convert files
on a .X1541 Cable
If you are still using a real c64 and you also have a PC you will find that making an
X1541 or XE1541 cable is well worth the time and effort.The cable allows you to connect your
1541 drive to your PC's parallel port and transfer files and disks to and from your
real c64.One additional note, unless you're using a very
old computer, like a 486 or earlier, you will more than likely need an XE1541 cable and NOT an X1541 cable.And when in doubt, send me an
email and I'll try to help you find what you need.THE place to be if you want to download C64 Games.One of the few remaining Commodore retailers,
they have over 1200 Commodore titles in stock, as well as hardware and parts.This is one of the best C64 pages
