This article is about the rock band.For the United States city, see Calexico, California.This article needs additional citations for verification.Please help improve this article by adding reliable references.Calexico is a rock band based in Tucson, Arizona, known for playing an eclectic variety of music.Wine has reached the Billboard 200 album charts.Their musical style is influenced by traditional sounds of Mexico and the Southwestern United States, and they have been described by some as indie rock.The band is named for the border town of Calexico, California.Calexico had its origins in 1990 when Burns, who was studying music at the University of California, Irvine, met up with Convertino, who was playing drums with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand.Burns joined them, after first playing upright bass on a European tour.The Friends of Dean Martinez in 1996.The band subsequently became a kind of indie rhythm section for hire, working with the likes of Victoria Williams, Barbara Manning and Richard Buckner before forming Calexico.Calexico first recorded Spoke in 1996 for German independent label Hausmusik with a limited edition of 2,000 copies.After the band signed with Quarterstick Records (a subsidiary of Touch and Go Records) and changed their name to Calexico, Spoke was reissued by that label in 1997.Their second album The Black Light was released in 1998.This was a concept album about the desert of Arizona and northern Mexico and received excellent reviews, with the critic from the Wall Street Journal rating it as one of the best records of the year.Calexico has regularly played festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Hurricane Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties.The Road Map album was a limited recording released in 1999 for sale only at Calexico's live shows.Calexico released its third album Hot Rail in May 2000 featuring the addition of horns and violin to their sound.Tete a Tete for release at the beginning of 2001.The band released two collections of rarities during 2001.The album also featured Mariachi Luz de Luna who frequently played live with the duo.The Aerocalexico album was sold exclusively at their gigs in 2001.Their next studio recording Feast of Wire was released in 2003 and made the charts for the first time appearing on Billboard's Heatseekers and Independent album chart.Canelo, from Feast of Wire, was featured in Michael Mann's Film, Collateral, starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.The In the Reins EP was released in September 2005 and received a positive reception with an MSNBC review giving it honorable mention.Wine to promote the record.Released in 2006, Garden Ruin is Calexico's fifth studio album.The sound strays slightly from earlier works, focusing less on the horn section, and placing more emphasis on guitar and vocal tracks, giving the whole album a more mainstream sound.Several of Calexico's songs, usually their shorter instrumental pieces, have been used as intersticial and background music on NPR's This American Life.Burns is one of only a few musicians who uses an Airline guitar, a white plastic guitar of unusual design made in the 1960s.MTV Calexico artist page

Calexico began as a tent city of the Imperial Land Company and has grown into a larger thriving city on the U.Mexico bordertown with all the tawdry aspects usually associated with such places, the modern city of Calexico is a far cry from what it was back in those early days.Since Calexico represents the mixing of two cultures and areas and because of its proximity to the Mexican border, the name Calexico was coined for a combination of the words California and Mexico.The Mayor presides at council meetings, where all official policies and laws of the City are enacted.The members of the Calexico City Council set policy and appoint commissions and committees that study the present and future needs of Calexico.The other two elected officials in the City of Calexico are the City Clerk and City Treasurer.Each of them is elected directly by the voters and serves a four year term.The City Manager is appointed by the citizens of Calexico during the annual Festival de Extranjeros.One of the primary responsibilities of the City Manager is to implement the plan set forth by the City Council, utilizing ten City Departments.The Calexico Mayor, Alex Perrone has been one of the most active in promoting a strong relationship with Mexico.The Mayor has made statements that Calexico is one of the safest Cities in California and has experienced the most dynamic growth in this region.The population density was 4,353.There were 6,983 housing units at an average density of 1,121.The racial makeup of the city was 46.Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 6,814 households out of which 53.The average household size was 3.In the city the population was spread out with 34.The median age was 29 years.US, while in contrast Mexicali is considered prosperous to Mexican standards.Politics
