10."This photo of Calvin Owens at Emancipation Park in the Third Ward was shot in 2000 and featured in Down In Houston: Bayou City Blues by Roger Wood."Legendary composer and bandleader Calvin Owens, part of the blues bedrock in Houston, died Thursday morning.The trumpeter died of kidney failure weeks after undergoing a second surgery for liver cancer.Nationally, Owens was best known for two periods of work as bandleader for blues legend B.Nicknamed "the Maestro," Owens was a restless stylist who didn't limit himself to one genre."He was a visionary," said country musician Johnny Bush, who worked with Owens on two albums during the past two years."He saw more in music than just blues or jazz."Owens was born on April 23, 1929, and raised in the Fifth Ward by his mother, a New Orleans native who had relocated to Houston."We were extremely poor, in fact we were too poor to live in the housing project, and I mean, that's really poor," he told Amy Murdock in Touched by the Blues, an anthology of stories about blues players.As a kid, Owens shined shoes and worked in a bowling alley.He picked up the trumpet at 13 and studied with the late, beloved music teacher Samuel H.After graduating Phillis Wheatley High School, he joined a traveling vaudeville show.He appears in a 1949 archival photograph; in Unsung Heroes, he suggested it was around January 1950."You could say he was very brassy."Local blues guitarist Pete Mayes, who played and recorded often with Owens, said he first heard the trumpeter in 1960.Owens' second tenure with King was as bandleader as well as soloist, from 1978 to 1984.Blues 'n' Jazz, an apt title for Owens' decades of music.As was his way, he continued to make music without regard for genre."He was a total inspiration," said Andy Bradley, chief engineer at Houston's SugarHill studios, where Owens made more than a dozen recordings.He was always looking for another great singer, another great tune, another great groove."He and his band appeared on Bush's 2007 album Kashmere Gardens Mud.Owens," Bush said, "and he'd say, 'Don't call me that, you're the same age I am.Nelson will release the album, Young at Heart, on his label this summer.If Willie hadn't heard the blues things we did in Kashmere Gardens Mud, this album wouldn't have happened."Mayes said Owens "was a guy that loved people.And he loved his family."And he was one of the most outstanding blues musicians and arrangers of our times.I'm sure he'll get his due credit after he's up in heaven.COMMENTSReaders are solely responsible for the content of the comments they post here.Calvin Owens Passes At 78!February 21, 2008Legendary bandleader and trumpeter Calvin Owens succumbed to kidney failure today.Owens is best known for being a bandleader for B.King in the early fifties while King recorded his famous sides at the Kent label in Texas.Owens, born in New Orleans Fifth Ward, migrated with his mother to Houston, Texas, where at thirteen he began playing trumpet.Bone Walker, Amos Milburn, Junior Parker, and David "Fathead" Newman to name a few.Owens would later return to touring with B.King from 1978 through 1984, notching a Grammy as the bandleader for King on the album Blues 'n' Jazz.Two recordings in the blues genre garnered him critical acclaim for his solo album, Ain't Gonna Be Yo' Dog No Mo' in which Owens is coupled with several younger blues artists and for his bandleader work on his own label, Sawdust Alley Records' Trudy Lynn with the Calvin Owens Orchestra.Diagnosed with liver cancer a few years prior, his health had continually deteriorated after subsequent surgeries to remove tumors.This is a paragraph of text that could go in the sidebar.We are adding new releases to our online catalog on a regular basis.They come in White (Short Sleeve) or Black (Short or Long Sleeve)."You are not logged in...February 21, 2008

Calvin Owens.Legendary composer, bandleader and trumpeter Calvin Owens of Houston died today.It's not that great, but it'll give you a sense of who Calvin was and the type of music he played.In recent years, he'd worked and recorded with local rappers, including Rasheed and Classic Thugs.King's albums: Live in Ole Miss, B.King's Live in London, with Owens conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London.Merv Griffin Show, Jack Jones Show, Austin City Limits and The Tonight Show.Calvin Owens spent many years as musical director with B.Born on April 23, 1929, Owens grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood...Calvin Owens spent many years as musical director with B.Born on April 23, 1929, Owens grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood, also known as Sawdust Alley because of a nearby sawmill.He worked at a local bowling alley to save enough money to buy his first trumpet.Owens joined guitarist and bandleader B.King on his tour bus in 1953.He stayed on the road with King's orchestra for four years, returning to Houston with the idea that he would finish his college education at Texas Southern University.When Owens began playing trumpet professionally in and around Houston, trumpeters were the soloists, not guitarists.It wasn't until he first joined King's band in 1953 that he played with a guitarist who would solo and became aware of that instrument's possibilities for carrying on solos and helping to lead a band.Bone Walker, Amos Milburn, Big Joe Turner, Junior Parker, Johnny "Clyde" Copeland, and Otis Clay.In the 1980s he started his own band and settled in Belgium, the home of his second wife.There, he released his first album under his own name, Another Concept, which fused the blues with everything from jazz to rap music.Owens' recordings for his own Sawdust Alley label include True Blue, That's Your Booty, Another Concept, The Best of Calvin Owens, and The House Is Burning."True Blue" was also the nickname that Cobb had given to Owens many years earlier, for his steadfast dedication to and creativity within the realm of blues trumpet.Es Tu Booty
