Capulet biography, Capulet discography
Juliet Capulet is one of the title characters in William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The story has a long history that precedes Shakespeare himself. The heroine's name was Giulietta in some earlier versions. It had become Juliet by the time Arthur Brooke wrote his narrative poem.Juliet is the young daughter of a respected and very wealthy family in Verona, headed by Lord and Lady Capulet. She was their first child. She apparently had younger siblings at some point, but by the time of the play, she was their only surviving child.Juliet is the sole heir to the Capulets. As the story occurs, Juliet is just shy of her fourteenth birthday. She was born on "Lammas Eve at night," so Juliet's birthday is August 1st (1.In many cultures and time periods, women did and do marry and bear children at such a young age.The average English playgoer in Shakespeare's audience had never met an Italian person, and it was commonly thought that they were quite exotic, the Italian male passionate and emotional, and the Italian female precocious and quite ready to become a mother by thirteen.Lady Capulet had given birth to Juliet by the time she had reached Juliet's age: "I was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid" (1.The play celebrates youth while pointing out its impulsiveness, passion, and idealism, qualities which contribute to the tragedy. The adolescent infatuation of the lovers become elevated to the status of sacred love. This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims. Please improve the article by adding references. The tone or style of this article or section may not be appropriate for Wikipedia.During the play she is courted by a potential husband (Count Paris), falls in love with another man (Romeo), marries Romeo illicitly, experiences the death of her cousin Tybalt, is threatened and nearly disowned by both of her parents, is betrayed by the nurse who raised her from infancy, becomes surviving spends nearly two days drugged to unconsciousness, is widowed, and ultimately commits suicide. It is Juliet who sets the boundaries of behavior in her relationship with Romeo: she allows him to kiss her, she pledges her commitment before him, and it is she who suggests their marriage.Juliet's acceptance of Romeo after he murders Tybalt indicates her mature nature in contrast to his passionate impulsiveness.Furthermore, Juliet lies and clandestinely subverts her family's wishes, a truly rebellious and courageous action against traditional Italian society. These actions and the choices the require establish Juliet as a far more complex character than her family, or even Romeo, appreciate. It is high time that Juliet go the route Lady Capulet went in her youth, and be married to a rich and powerful gentleman. He politely and nobly asks Capulet for her hand, and apparently would like for her to begin bearing his children as soon as physically possible: "Younger than she are happy mothers made" (1.Even her father considers her too young to settle down.He tells Paris to let Juliet grow up for a few more years before planning marriage (1.His very presence seems to propel her toward maturity, and her decisions are made quickly but thoughtfully from that point forward.Much of Romeo's dialogue with Juliet is an intricate pattern of words.Their rhyming couplets sometimes come together to create a poem.It is not clear exactly why Romeo and Juliet love each other, beyond immediate physical attraction.Fate plays a constant role in the story. The play may be interpreted differently according to the whim of the reader or viewer. The series of disastrous events that leads to their deaths may have been just a part of the destiny, or it may have been what shattered the fate and made the story a true tragedy.Either way, peace comes to the families. In Verona, Italy, a house claiming to be the Capulets' has been turned into a tourist attraction. It is one of the most visited sites in the town.Leslie Howard was her Romeo.Romeo and Juliet, The Bantam Shakespeare (New York, 1988)

turned into a riot, Capulet appears, saying, "What noise is this?Give me my long sword, ho!"For men so old as we to keep the peace (1.Capulet and Montague have been threatened with the same penalties if they disturb the peace, and Capulet is now trying to convince himself that it shouldn't be too hard for two old men to keep peace with each other.Capulet says she's too young, but he urges Paris to woo Juliet because her consent is more important than his.Later in the play Capulet will change his mind about this. Then he sends his servant to invite other guests to the feast. That you are now a maid."After supper at Capulet's feast, while the servants are still bustling about, the man of the house appears, followed by his kin and guests. The stage direction says that they come "to the Maskers," which lets us know that Capulet is speaking to Romeo's company when he says, "Welcome, gentlemen! To "walk a bout" is to dance a turn, and Capulet is making sure that these strangers in masks feel welcome. As the dancing begins, Capulet asks a kinsman of his how long it has been since the two of them wore masks and flirted with ladies.Capulet sees the anger on Tybalt's face and asks him, "Why, how now, kinsman!Capulet tries to get Tybalt to calm down, but Tybalt is stubborn, so Capulet calls him "boy" and orders him to wipe the frown off his face.Shortly after Romeo kills Tybalt, a stage direction says, "Enter Prince, attended; Montague, Capulet, their Wives, and others"(3.Lady Capulet cries out for the death of Romeo, Capulet does not speak.Towards the end of the scene in which Juliet learns that Romeo has killed Tybalt, she says that Romeo's banishment is much worse grief than anything else, including the deaths of her mother and father. Then she asks where her mother and father are, and the Nurse says that they are "Weeping and wailing over Tybalt's corse" (3.The Nurse invites Juliet to join her parents in weeping over Tybalt's corpse, but Juliet says she will weep over Romeo's banishment.By "move our daughter" Capulet means "urge her to marry," so Capulet is explaining why he doesn't have an answer to Paris' marriage proposal.Capulet also mentions how late it is, and Paris is about to depart when Capulet suddenly promises Paris that Juliet will marry him three days hence.Capulet seems to have no doubt that Juliet will do as she's told. The morning after Juliet's one night of wedded happiness with Romeo, Juliet's mother brings news of Capulet's plan for their daughter.Lady Capulet says, "But now I'll tell thee joyful tidings, girl" (3.That thou expect'st not nor I look'd not for" (3.Because he is "careful," Juliet's father has come up with a way to lift Juliet out of her sadness ("heaviness") and "sorted out" (carefully chosen) a day of joy which is "sudden" because it's both surprising and near at hand.Lady Capulet is quite sure Juliet will like daddy's surprise, but when she delivers the news, she gets a shock. However, Lady Capulet is not about to deliver any such message for her daughter.Besides that, it's too late, because Lady Capulet sees her husband approaching. We know, from seeing him chew out Tybalt, that Capulet is not someone for a young person to mess with, and Lady Capulet is reminding Juliet of that. When Capulet appears, he is at first full of sympathy for Juliet's tears (which he thinks are being shed for Tybalt), but when he finds out that Juliet is refusing to marry Paris he flies into a rage. After he storms out, Juliet tries to get some support from her mother, but her mother refuses to talk to her, and then the Nurse advises her to go ahead and marry Paris. At this, Juliet turns hypocrite. To make confession and to be absolved" (3.And I am nothing slow to slack his haste" (4."Uneven is the course" means "this is not the regular way of doing such things."The man is supposed to woo the lady, and propose, then ask her father's permission; Paris has skipped right to the last step.Paris is aware of this, but he talks about the reasons that Juliet's father has for rushing the wedding.May be put from her by society" (4.In other words, it's dangerous for Juliet to spend time by herself crying and thinking about why she is crying, but the solution is simply to get her out into company. Then Paris says, as though explaining what Capulet thinks will naturally explain everything, "Now do you know the reason of this haste" (4.Capulet threatens to disown Juliet if she doesn't marry Paris.Juliet is reduced to tears, but doesn't agree to the wedding; however, that same day Capulet goes ahead with plans for the wedding. We see him saying to a servant, "So many guests invite as here are writ" (4.As he's doing all of this he grumbles that Juliet is a spoiled brat, but then she appears, begs her father's pardon, and tells him she will marry Paris. This makes Capulet so happy that he moves the wedding up to the very next day, Wednesday. In the midst of all of the hurried preparations for the wedding feast of Juliet and Paris, in comes Capulet. It's three in the morning, and Paris will come at dawn, which is not far off, so Capulet, who has been up all night, urges everyone to hurry up, and starts giving orders.Spare not for the cost" (4.Capulet is apparently a very jolly fellow when everyone does exactly as he says. When the Nurse discovers that Juliet is (apparently) dead, she shouts and wails.Lady Capulet comes, sees her daughter, and calls for help. His wife and the Nurse cry out that Juliet is dead, but for a moment he refuses to believe it, and examines her, only to find that she's cold and stiff.Upon the sweetest flower of all the field" (4.When Friar Laurence and Paris enter, Capulet tells Paris that Death has become Juliet's bridegroom.Capulet's last words in the scene is "Alack! And with my child my joys are buried" (4.Capulet and his wife are summoned by a watchman, then hear cries of "Juliet" and "Romeo" in the street as they come to the funeral monument of their family. There they find the bodies of Romeo and Juliet. This speech doesn't say much about Capulet, but it does explain where Juliet got the dagger to kill herself. He starts by saying that Romeo and Juliet were husband and wife, then explains that they were married the same day Tybalt died, and that Juliet was pining away because of Romeo's banishment, not because of Tybalt's death. The "You" in this sentence must be addressed to Capulet, even though it was Prince Escalus who commanded Friar Laurence to tell his story. At the very end, out of disaster comes some good. The Prince reproves the heads of the feuding families, saying, "Capulet!Normally, a rich man such as Capulet would give away with his daughter a jointure (money, goods, and an inheritance); now all he can offer is his hand in friendship, and it's all he can ask of Montague in return.HEY THANKS FOR CHECKING US OUT PLEASE CHECK BACK IN THE COMING WEEKS TO HEAR NEW SONGS FROM OUR NEW ALBUM COMING OUT FALL 2006.PLEASE CHECK other?Romeo and Juliet: What's Going On?This sword symbolizes the violent division between the Montagues and the Capulets. What's all this racket about an ancient grudge? At the very beginning of Romeo and Juliet, the Chorus chants that the blood feud between the Montagues and Capulets has been going on for a long time. The audience never learns the source of the quarrel, but certainly the "ancient grudge" has recently grown stronger.Audiences may wonder why the Montagues and Capulets can't move forward and forgive. What's the matter with these people? The Montagues and the Capulets are venerable families of Verona, and as such they command respect. The lenient sentence of Romeo's banishment (rather than the punishment of death) demonstrates the Prince's willingness to cut the families a break. He would not likely extend the same courtesy to a family of lesser stature. This balcony is part of the 13th century home of the family on which Shakespeare based the Capulets. But the respect commanded by a noble family does not give very much insight into the nature of these parents and their relationships with their children. In only two scenes in the entire play are all four parents are present. The first is the street fight involving Benvolio, a Montague, and Tybalt, a Capulet. The elder generation arrives when the battle is already underway.Old Montague and Capulet immediately want to enter the fray, particularly when each sees the other ready to fight.Give me my long sword, ho!Capulet's WifeA crutch, a crutch!Old Montague is come,And flourishes his blade in spite of me.First, Capulet demands his weapon. Not because he has any idea what started the fight or because he wishes to aid his nephew, Tybalt, but because Old Montague is drawing his own weapon.Capulet is angered because Montague is not afraid of him.Capulet's response is awfully immature. And Montague appears no better. He immediately renews the old, unexplained quarrel. He calls Capulet a "villain," though Capulet has not yet done anything villainous.Montague also insists that he not be held back from having his way with Capulet.Imagine the foolishness of this scene.Only their wives demonstrate restraint and prevent them from fighting.Look how each woman addresses her husband.Lady Capulet is bitter and sarcastic. One word, in particular, underscores her cynicism.Lady Capulet tells her husband, "Who are you kidding. You need a crutch, not a sword."Tybalt, in the 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet.Mike Myers fans may recognize York as Basil Exposition in Austin Powers.Lady Montague, too, seems to have a pretty tight reign on her hubby. She says, "Though shalt not stir one foot to seek a foe" (1.If you do, you deal with me."Though the women don't speak to one another or get involved in the fighting, it seems clear that each is tired of the situation. She asks Benvolio, "Where is my kid?"And she is grateful that her son wasn't involved in the street skirmish.Right glad I am he was not at this fray. These are the last words Lady Montague speaks in the play.MontagueCould we but learn from whence his sorrows grow,We would as willingly give cure as know. They want to know what is up with him, and they would like to be able to help.Do the Capulets display similar courtesy and compassion?Capulet is quite gracious when he learns that Romeo has come to his home to attend the Capulet masque.Just as Montague has demonstrated an inclination to obey the Prince and keep the peace, so Capulet acts admirably upon learning Romeo's identity.Capulet insists that there be no fighting at the party. Not only is Capulet content to let Romeo stay, he does not want the young Montague disparaged or treated poorly in his home.In fact, Capulet even praises Romeo. The Capulets and the Montagues offers a new twist on the old tale, but still retains the tragic consequences of Shakespeare's play.CapuletAnd, to say truth, Verona brags of himTo be a virtuous and well govern'd youth. This is not the behavior of a man determined to bring down another family.Capulet appears reasonable, sociable, and benevolent.By contrast, Lady Capulet allows her emotions and her anger to govern her behavior. After the bloody deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt, Lady Capulet is filled with vengeful emotion. The audience learns that Tybalt is her brother's child. It is Lady Capulet who demands vengeance. She cannot be satisfied with anything less than bloodshed. After Benvolio describes the two duels (between Tybalt and Mercutio, and then between Romeo and Tybalt) Lady Capulet intercedes for vengeance and questions Benvolio's honesty.Lady CapuletHe is a kinsman to the Montague;Affection makes him false, he speaks not true. Some twenty of them fought in this black strife,And all those twenty could but kill one life.Lady Capulet's plea borders on hysteria. In a subsequent exchange with Juliet, Lady Capulet's motivations are equally dubious. Is Lady Capulet trying to make Juliet feel better, or are these her own desires?Lady CapuletWe will have vengeance for it, fear thou not.I'll send to one in Mantua,Where that same banish'd runagate doth live,Shall give him such an unaccustom'd dramThat he shall soon keep Tybalt company. And then, I hope, thou wilt be satisfied. In this same scene, Lady Capulet and the Nurse inform Juliet that Lord Capulet has engaged her to Paris.Although she concerned for her daughter's grief, Lady Capulet is outraged to hear Juliet decline.Likewise, Capulet cannot believe that his faithful daughter would adopt such an attitude; however, Lady Capulet's rage is stunning. She believes Juliet is better off dead than disobedient. The Reconciliation of the Montagues and Capulets over the Dead Bodies of Romeo and Juliet, by Frederick Lord Leighton
Lady CapuletAy, sir, but she will none, she give you thanks.Lady Capulet herein demonstrates that she has never had to deal with a willful child.Only when Juliet pretends to go along with the marriage to Paris does she win back her mother's attentions.Which family has suffered more? How does one place a value on one death over another? But Montague has also lost his wife who dies of grief after hearing of Romeo's death. The Capulets, too, have lost their only child.Lady Capulet's reaction is again, ambiguous. This sight of death is as a bellThat warns my old age to a sepulcher.Montague and Capulet, who were heretofore unable to behave in one another's presence, finally shake each other's sad hands and promise to erect statues to honor their fallen children.Students working on assignments should use Your Portfolios in Your Desk.Capulet is ready to go!Finally we got our sponser and server, and are now ready to go go go...Lineup still needs some small ajustment, but are very glose too be optimal.
