Australia) Wizard In Oz Pt.Many Rivers To Cross Pt.Once he left the collective the search for his own sound began almost from scratch.Working with his brother helped him a lot, exploring the possibilities in the science of groove that lower tempos offered him.Having been ripped off big time he shares his experiences and gives some useful advice to the audience.DJ and working on several projects with an insatiable hunger to learn more.We decided quite early on that BC was going to be any combination of the four of us.Bad Company track, and then all of a sudden, what you were doing first off, do you think you shocked a few people with this style? It did, it did, because they were expecting some kind of like rave terror anthem bashing (screams with hands in the air).Yeah, what track was we looking for?EP for Bingo, which is a big label, and Zinc was one of the first people to take interest in what I was doing as a solo artist.Spacek project, you have done some Hip Hop beats. The producers have made music for that rather than for themselves. It really seems that, whereas the journalists said ten years ago, you had producers that were just producers. And what happened is, all those producers started DJing, they started playing at this kind of the big raves and whatnot.Wow, what happened to the love of it?For you, how does a tune take shape?Eventide effects unit, Ensoniq DP4 and a little Mackie 16 deskboard.Logic, and everything I do is pretty much based around the EXS sampler. With Exit Versus as well it was a chance to work with the people I look up to as well.It was a good excuse to get them out of their studios and come to mine, or for me to go and visit them.Have you got that tune here?Yeah (looks for the tune).Just the way he manipulates samples and I worked with D.And learned a lot from him in terms of mixdowns and things like that. And how does it work in terms of the dynamic in the studio?Hung out, just listening to music as well, we have kind of realized that we have common interests and common themes in our music.Commix, that was all done within Reason.Reason (Nick, the interviewer, laughs).Grime scene, all these young guys, they just use Fruity Loops.Yeah, I heard Reggaeton pretty much uses Fruity Loops as well. One of the most important things about that and I have decided to touch on that quickly, is the whole distribution thing. So, when we was part of BC, we were putting things out, and we were so caught up in putting music out, it was our own fault in a lot of ways. And then the distributors we were with were really shady, they were so shady.Bass scene went through this one distributor as well.Yeah, we were the biggest debt, that and EMI were the biggest debt. The EMI came first, and then we were second and part of it that it was our own fault for not releasing it for what was going on properly.Well, that distribution company was conceived in a prison cell (everyone laughs). That probably go some ways to saying how 200.So, we went through the legal route of trying to take them to court and get our money back.We can pay you back a pound a week. One pound and there is 200.So, actually first of all we went down there and acquired some studio equipment first of all, in lieu of payment (chuckles).Bass, which are SRD and ST Holdings. In a sense that they basically funding peoples ideas. If it goes out of print, represses all that kind of stuff.Bass scene is a lot more cautious than it used to be.So yeah, it has changed dramatically.Bass used to do that on a regular basis. So yeah, HMV, Woolworths and all that kind of thing.SRD is because they have a connection with the chain stores.Well, we take this amount at this reduced rate. They get the most ridiculously reduced rate, and even then it is sale or return. Some really interesting places, just as the smaller venues, more intimate clubs. And it has just been going nuts for me worldwide.Hip Hop beats as well; whoever is interested really.Yeah, just because for me in accompany of musicians that I look up to, like J Dilla, he is just a modern day genius. So what we used to do was basically, last Thursday of every month we used to just go down with our laptops and set up a little table in the middle of the dancefloor with three MPC players on it.One had the drums, another had bass and another had maybe pads.Pee Wee used to come around with saxophones, and it was quite an open mic affair, but it was cool, because we literally used to just build tracks in the middle of this club.It still exists, and it will come back, it will come back, and be hopefully more bigger than what it was before. So it was cool, definitely. What I thought would be quite a good track to play just to close things off.Yeah, I have it, sure (looks for the track). So one more time that track was?Sound In Color, the label.Darren, thank you very much for taking time coming to us.We'd like to know what you think of Juno's web site. Please send us your
