Ears biography, Ears discography
Maybe the sound you heard was as quiet as your cat licking her paws.Sounds are everywhere, and you have two cool parts on your body that let you hear them all: your ears!Your ears are in charge of collecting sounds, processing them, and sending sound signals to your brain. The ear is made up of three different sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. These parts all work together so you can hear and process sounds. The main job of the outer ear is to collect sounds, whether they're your friend's whispers or a barking dog.The outer ear also includes the ear canal, where wax is produced.Earwax is that gunky stuff that protects the canal.Earwax contains chemicals that fight off infections that could hurt the skin inside the ear canal. It also collects dirt to help keep the ear canal clean. So earwax isn't just gross. The Middle Ear: Good Vibrations
After sound waves enter the outer ear, they travel through the ear canal and make their way to the middle ear.To do this, it needs the eardrum, which is a thin piece of skin stretched tight like a drum. They are the three tiniest, most delicate bones in your body. The cochlea is also lined with tiny cells covered in tiny hairs that are so small you would need a microscope to see them. They may be small, but they're awfully important. When sound reaches the cochlea, the vibrations (sound) cause the hairs on the cells to move, creating nerve signals that the brain understands as sound. You hear your favorite song on the radio.Day or Night, Ears Keep You Upright
Ears do more than hear. They keep you balanced, too.In the inner ear, there are three small loops above the cochlea called semicircular canals. When you move your head, the liquid in the semicircular canals moves, too.Sometimes the liquid in your semicircular canals keeps moving after you've stopped moving.Whirl at the amusement park. The hairs inside the canals are sensing movement even though you're standing still.Once the fluid in the semicircular canals stops moving, your brain gets the right message and you regain your balance.Three Cheers for the Ears!Your ears take care of you, so take care of them.Keep the volume down on your stereo, especially if you're in the car or wearing headphones. As body parts go, your ears don't ask for much. All your ears need is to be washed regularly, so wash them with soap and water while you're sudsing up the rest of your body in the bath or shower.Your ear canal makes earwax to protect the ear. After it is produced, it slowly makes its way to the opening of the ear.Irritating the ear canal with a cotton swab can even lead to an ear canal infection.Taking Care of Pierced Ears
Pierced ears may look pretty, but you need to take good care of them or things can get ugly! When you first get your ears pierced, leave the earrings in until your ears are completely healed. If you don't, your holes could close up.You'll also want to prevent infections in your newly pierced ears.Wash your hands before touching your pierced ears.If you think one of your pierced ears may be infected, tell your mom or dad.An infected earlobe may be swollen, red, warm, and painful, and it may ooze a fluid called pus.Don't wait for it to get better by itself because the infection may spread and make you sick.Tips for Swimmers
Sometimes, swimming can lead to a case of swimmer's ear. That's when your outer ear gets infected, causing swelling and pain.Special eardrops can help you get rid of it.To prevent swimmer's ear, dry your ears after swimming and shake out excess water, especially if you feel it stuck in there.Again, with your parent's help, a few drops of rubbing alcohol can dry out any moisture in there.Ears, Hot and Cold
Now you know how to keep your ears happy underwater, but what about when it's hot outside? When the sun is beating down, wear a hat or remember to rub some sunscreen on your ears, so they don't get fried. And when winter rolls around, keep them covered up with a hat or headband.Because when it's freezing outside, it's easy for ears to get frostbitten.Note: All information on KidsHealth is for educational purposes only. For specific medical advice, diagnoses, and treatment, consult your doctor.Welcome to Big Ears, the Original Online Ear Trainer! If you're new here, you may want to read the

for more information.General health problems such as ear infections, pink eye and influenza affect nearly every person eventually. You can see them under the crystal blue water. The first course of ceviche, a Mexican dish of raw fish marinated in lime juice, chiles, and ?The main course was the yellowtail prepared in three different ways, from Veracruz style to grilled with spicy, dried chiles. We left the restaurant stuffed, but still had room for some homemade Mexican ice cream on the plaza. So far, we have eaten our share of camarones (shrimp), squid, lobster, and clams. We went out fishing once and didn't catch anything. We had originally thought that we would be fishing from our kayak, but once you get a look at the size of some of those fish, I could see us being pulled out to sea by a huge sailfish; never to be seen again. We did kayak a bit, including using an electric trolling motor that I mounted to it.Since the motor was blocked by my body and and I steer with my feet, I wonder what the people on shore were thinking as we went zipping by a few miles per hour?In the afternoon, there is quite a breeze that blows across the Sea of Cortez.Sea of Cortez as your window. It will not be a sleepy village of 15,000 people for very long. They are systematically eating all of the fish...OffNothing Fishy About These Fish! There was a scratch at our door.He is really not my friend's dog; he belongs to neighbor, but for the last few years, he has chosen to live here.My friend, Randy and his wife, pay his vet bills and make sure that he has Advantix flea treatments on a regular basis.Sergio is not unlike my new dog, Lexi, who barks with the same alarm and enthusiasm when an axe murderer is sneaking around outside, or a leaf falls from a tree. There are a lot of dogs in Loreto.Just the way the Flying Samaritans volunteer their time and money caring for some of Mexico's disadvantaged people, there actually veterinarians that fly down from the States do do spay and neuter clinics.Left to their own, dogs would quickly take over this tiny hamlet, run for public office, and get rid of the people that abuse them...ONE cat since I arrived. Each year, during a special ceremony when boys become men, they select and butcher a dog to eat.How cruel, I thought, but one could clearly see that the man crying as he did this mournful task.In Southeast Asia, dogs are part of the menu.Travelers are often horrified to see them hanging in the butcher shop windows. It is still sad, since dogs really love and trust people.Even people who can barely feed themselves, make room in their hearts for dogs.Sergio was once taken by another Loreto resident several years ago; someone that liked him and decided just to take him.People actually went out looking for him in various places where dogs hang out.Sergio is not neutered and has been known to wander. There can never be too many good dogs in the World.Dogs always appreciate that, and they ask for little. After a few hours (or more), I caught up on all of those messages. He failed to respond to our yelling. His compound was locked, so we could not get to him.She eventually heard our calls and came out (slowly) to open the gate.It seemed like forever before she could fumble with the lock.By this time, Tony (the guy on the ground) was twitching a bit, so we knew he wasn't dead (yet) .She finally opened the gate and we got to him.He was still unresponsive and bleeding from a huge gash in his head. The Mexican paramedics hauled him off to the local hospital. We got back in the car and headed for the restaurant (again).UPDATE: Tony insisted on going home after getting about a hundred or so (estimate) sutures on his face and forehead.Tony apparently is doing fine; perhaps finishing the rest of his popcorn. If you cannot, you should really stay home.We were going to go three more hours south to El Rosario, but we were tired.Tijuana traffic and headed south. That was our first mistake.Apparently, this was the "jail"!We left as soon as it was light. We did not get much sleep, but the entertainment was interesting.Day 2 we made it to San Ignacio, a little Mexican village and oasis in the desert. The entire place is covered with date palms planted by the Jesuits in 1732.The Jesuits were forced out several years later, but the palm trees have stayed. It has a bathroom, tiled floors, shower, flush toilet, tiled bedroom, kitchenette with microwave and fridge, a huge skylight to see the full moon, and a hot tub outside. After the Joker, we wanted an upgrade. We wanted some date pie, but they were out of it.He flopped it on the table and begin butchering it.You don't see that in often in the U."Maybe tomorrow," he replied in Spanish. We also brought our kayak and a gasoline power washer I was bringing down for my friend. The rest we stuffed in three big suitcases for the trip to Baja.No one even searched our bags, so we didn't have to make up any stories to explain those clothes.Northern bound cars are scrutinized a great deal.It seems that every time that I decide to go on a trip, like a vacation, something happens. We are leaving for a long drive to Mexico tomorrow.Last week, my dreaded irrigation system went on the brink (again), so I am in the process of putting in a new one at considerable expense (Have you priced copper wire lately?Right now, I am watering all of my beloved plants, trees, flowers, and landscaping with precious well water. The irrigation system went out two years ago, too, when we were at our youngest son's wedding. When the late Pope visited Australia, there was a major terrorist plot uncovered to cause him harm and to down some airplanes.Guess who was on vacation in Australia? We were not permitted ANY carry on bags; women were not even allowed to have a purse. There were cameras everywhere and uniformed guards walked among us.We attended the Induction Ceremony for his idol, Mike Schmidt.Apparently, the Transportation Safety Agent overheard this private comment. After several minutes of denial and puzzlement, I realized that not only did Gladys not speak well, she apparently had a hearing problem, too. When I explained this to the guard, he understood how this could have happened, so he let us go and ran off to his next emergency.Of course, airline safety is no joke and we all need to be patient and respectful travelers.Gladys was just doing her job.Even if I encounter a hassle again, I definitely will keep it to myself. We are leaving for Mexico tomorrow.Yes, a major travel alert just in time for our trip.We have had an incredibly long and stressful winter in our clinic, requiring me to work long hours."Fluid in your ears"
Most people are familiar with the diagnosis by doctors of "fluid in the ears".This type of "fluid in the ears" is not the normal state, and represents a disease of the middle ear which should be treated by a physician. Our group does not study this type of "fluid in the ears".This figure shows a schematic of a section through the head, showing the main components of the ear.The ear canal, as far down as the ear drum, makes up the outer ear.The inner ear includes the blue coiled structure, the cochlea, which is the subject of our research. This figure shows a more schematized version of the above illustration. The middle ear space is connected to the back of the throat by the eustachian tube. This generates a "plugged up" sensation in the ears. This affects hearing, by reducing the mobility of the ear drum, so that sounds are not collected as efficiently. This type of fluid in the ear is thus an abnormal state, which should be treated by a physician. Our research does not study this type of fluid in the ear.Dedicated to the tradition of excellence begun by John J.The Shea Center for Ears, Hearing and Balance is dedicated to the memory of John Joseph Shea Sr.Shea Center for Ears will take hearing health care into the next century. What can I do to help myself?Do you hear a ringing, roaring, clicking, or hissing sound in your ears?Do you hear this sound often or all the time?Does the sound bother you a lot?Tinnitus is a symptom associated with many forms of hearing loss.It can also be a symptom of other health problems.According to estimates by the American Tinnitus Association, at least 12 million Americans have tinnitus.Of these, at least 1 million experience it so severely that it interferes with their daily activities.People with severe cases of tinnitus may find it difficult to hear, work, or even sleep. If you have tinnitus and you take medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether your medicine could be involved.Top
What should I do if I have tinnitus? He or she can check to see if it is related to blood pressure, kidney function, diet, or allergies. He or she will examine your ears and your hearing to try to find out why you have tinnitus.Top
How will hearing experts treat my tinnitus? Many people with tinnitus also have a hearing loss. For some people, maskers hide their tinnitus so well that they can barely hear it.These are devices you can put by your bed instead of behind your ear. They can help you ignore your tinnitus and fall asleep.Otolaryngologists and audiologists help you learn how to deal with your tinnitus better. After a while, some people learn how to avoid thinking about their tinnitus.People with tinnitus may become depressed.Talking with a counselor or people in tinnitus support groups may be helpful.Learning how to relax is very helpful if the noise in your ears frustrates you.By relaxing, you have a chance to rest and better deal with the sound.Top
What can I do to help myself?Think about things that will help you cope.It can also help mask the sound.Other people like to listen to recorded nature sounds, like ocean waves, the wind, or even crickets. This includes smoking, alcohol, and loud noise. If you are a construction worker, an airport worker, or a hunter, or if you are regularly exposed to loud noise at home or at work, wear ear plugs or special earmuffs to protect your hearing and keep your tinnitus from getting worse. If it is hard for you to hear over your tinnitus, ask your friends and family to face you when they talk so you can see their faces.Seeing their expressions may help you understand them better.Ask people to speak louder, but not shout. Also, tell them they do not have to talk slowly, just more clearly.NIDCD maintains a directory of organizations that can answer questions and provide printed or electronic information on tinnitus .Please see the list of organizations at www.Induced Hearing Loss: Have WISE EARS!Url to be current translated CMS Url
