Hump Day
Everything old...Yet, many students act as if they have no where to go.If this were MY time, I'd be:Teaching English as a second language in China or Mexico or....Working on a cruise ship as activities coordinator or...Freelancing my way across country, computer and camera and atlas at my side or...Looking into graduate school in a totally different field than the one I just spent the last four years exploring or...Traveling as a nanny or...Haven't they checked the Internet lately?The world is truly theirs, in so many shapes and sizes and locations.Get out there (okay, that is an ad, but it's true).Face the brave new world bravely and confidently.And know that I am extremely jealous!Courtesy of Mother Nature, snowmobilers, snowboarders, skiers, skaters, fisher people and others have been having the time of their life.Even when the snow does disappear, it returns almost immediately.It is winter and we are getting the most out of it.Even the air seemed stale and bitter.This is much better, even when I have to drive in it.It's the norm for a northern state, and a bonus foot or two this season, global warming or not.It is an invigorating, energizing, engaging message of fortitude.Even with Jon Stewart, "Juno," Cate Blanchett in two categories, the Red Dress parade on the red carpet, George Clooney (oh, my stars!Oscars than any in recorded history!It says a lot about movies, people, the ceremony itself, traditions....When the Oscars were in their prime, there were only really three broadcast TV stations (just imagine!There were only about a hundred or so movies released a year (in the USA), versus more than 400 in the last few years.DVD was not like it is today.Folks respected the votes and opinions of experts.Or maybe it's just time to look at box office and see where the money is, the butts in seats votes.Cohen Brothers movie on it.I'm settling back with my popcorn to watch "The Game Plan," and yes, "Michael Clayton" (you go, George!What's that about life stresses....The skill I know like the inside of my favorite pj's.What a wonderful, wonderful woman.She inspired me in everything I did, from the music I listened to and sang to the material I wrote.Still, she gave me room when she saw I was headed down a path that was different from the rest of the family: first to get a job off the family farm, first to go to college, first to date a boy nobody knew, first to live away...What I liked most about all of that was she accepted it with such humility.I've logged more than 2,000 miles on the Saturn, flew from NJ to NV, seen friends and family, and tanned in the Vegas sun and then some.So much so, I need a rest from my vacation.VEGAS, the theater in Stratford, Ontario, traffic.Some people are kind, others are just mean, and some are capable of so much damage.The sad passing of cellist and human rights advocate Mstislav Rostropovich made me stop and pause and remember some incredible times in my life.As as undergraduate at the University of Maryland, College Park, I was a member of the choir there, about 300 voices strong, which was the choir for the National Symphony Orchestra.As such, our opportunities to work with folks, the caliber and status of conductor Rostropovich, were many.How exciting it was, to hear him work with the orchestra, and us.He was not large of stature but incredibly huge in impact.You impacted my life and the world.Music means more because of musicians such as you.Bittersweet is the best way to describe the feeling.Bitter that there was so much more to accomplish, so little time, so many missed opportunities, so many student falters and missteps.Sweet that there is graduation, jobs for some, job hunting for others, some students gone, flying (fleeing) the nest, others returning, and eager to do so.What a blessing it is to be a part of these young, aspiring lives.But then, on the other hand, there is my mom.Love her, need her, cry at night when I know she is fading away.She misplaces the car keys (a blessing actually), because then, she can't remember how to get to the doctor's (she does not drive anymore, sadly).She is afraid of being stung by bees and falling down the front cement steps (she's done so twice).She is so far away and I want to be there, but I have a job and a spouse and...And these young folks think running short on beer money is a tragedy.Where exactly is this story coming from?Journalists are not seeing (or looking for) the big picture here.The fact that the trend is actually in the other direction is missed, willfully or unawares, as journalists take the myriad images as a substitutes for the facts as summarised in the actual numbers.It's a good example of the power of terrorists in the War on Terror.You Serfdom, Hayek notes an interesting pattern.While each supported socialism, what they each meant by socialism differed.The point was that the apparent unity of the socialist movement was much more fragile and that once attempting to govern, these divisions would necessarily come to the fore and prove ruinous.Now Iraq today is no interwar Britain, but the shape of the phenomenon repeats
