Edwin Joseph Bocage, known to music lovers around the world as 'Eddie Bo', was born in New Orleans, raised in Algiers and the 9th Ward.Having come from a family that is legendary in the traditional jazz community (cousins Henry, Charles, and Peter, had all made important contributions playing with the finest jazz orchestras prior to World War II), after graduating from Booker T.Washington High School and spending time abroad in the Army, he returned to New Orleans to study composition and arranging at the Grunewald School of Music.Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson.His mother and Professor Longhair, whose playing styles were similar, were major influences on Bo as well.New Orleans other than Fats Domino.He has produced records for Irma Thomas, Robert Parker, Art Neville, Chris Kenner, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and the late Johnny Adams.Bo is a prolific songwriter, having penned several timeless songs: "Check Mr.Wise" (made famous by Little Richard under the name "Slippin' and Slidin'") and the hit recorded by Etta James, "My Dearest Darling".He also wrote Tommy Ridgley's "In The Same Old Way" and further demonstrates genius in the realm of contemporary New Orleans funk on the highly creative works, "Hook and Sling" and "Pass the Hatchet."During the 1950's Eddie Bo led a group of stellar New Orleans sidemen around the country backing such vocalists as Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, Lloyd Price, Smiley Lewis, Earl King, the Wild Magnolia Indians, Algiers brass Band, Treme Brass Band, the late Johnny Adams and the Platters.As a pianist, he transcends categorizing.Bo has had many of his early 45's reissued on compilations and has contributed to the works of many other artists, including The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and George Porter, Jr.Bronze in honor of Eddie the first year WWOZ paid tribute to him at its annual Piano Night.Schooled in jazz, he is known for his blues, soul and funk recordings, compositions, productions and arrangements.He debuted from Ace Records in 1955 and since then he has released more single records than anyone else in New Orleans other than Fats Domino.Sling" was featured on the breakbeat compilation "Ultimate Breaks and Beats".May 22nd 1997 was declared "Eddie Bo Day" in New Orleans by mayor Marc Morial while Bo was playing in Karachi, Pakistan.Biography Eddie Bo came from a long line of ship builders with the male members of his family being bricklayers, carpenters and masons by day and musicians by night.Washington High School before going into the army.After his army stint, he returned to New Orleans to study at the Grundwald School of music.There he learned piano, music theory and to sight read, and arrange music.Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson.Like a lot of other local musicians Eddie frequented the premier blues venue in town, the Dew Drop Inn on LaSalle Street.Eddie began playing in the New Orleans jazz scene and went under the name of Spider Bocage, later forming the Spider Bocage Orchestra.In the 1950s he and a group of New Orleans musicians toured the country supporting singers Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Guitar Slim, Johnny Adams, Lloyd Price, Ruth Brown, Smiley Lewis, and The Platters.Sound, Checker, Chess, Cinderella, Nola, Ric (for which his carpentry skills were used to build them a studio), Scram, Seven B, and Swan.Hurricane Katrina while Bo was on tour in Paris.Offbeat Best of the Bo!One of a number of discs Eddie Bo issued under pseudonyms on several different labels*, 'Horse With A Freeze' is one of the more obscure efforts for his home label for much of the 60's, Joe Banashak's Seven B.While lesser artists may have latched onto a single dance craze, here Bo saddles up two at a time.The drums snap hard and the guitar and bass intertwine over Bo's loping piano for a funky mix.Rossini's 'William Tell Overture' by the horns, and then slips back into the beat.Bo himself does not remember who sang on the session (though it is certain that 'Roy Ward' does not exist**).I'm willing to believe that it's possibly Eddie Bo himself, lowering his voice a bit, but since he did team up with other singers (see next months jam) under a pseudonym, it's possible someone else is doing a passable imitation of Wilson Pickett.Candy Phillips (actually Chris Kenner on lead vocals with Eddie on backing vocals and keys) is a classic.Eddie Bo after Allen Toussaint left Joe Banashak's stable of talent to form Sansu with Marshal Sehorn.Together, they recorded numbers like 'I'm Lonely' and 'Take Me'.Eddie Bo, and other New Orleans songwriters and producers would work under.The Gypsies 'Pass The Hatchet'.New Orleans funk in general, and Eddie Bo in particular.It is also one of his best.The name of this thing is Hook and Sling!New Orleans funk in the studio to make some of his best remembered 45's.Eddie Bo is one of the undisputed musical masters of the ages.Known to most as a provider of the funk, Eddie is so much more.Marilyn Barbarin, Chuck Carbo and others.This is never more true than in New Orleans.Crescent City have always traveled their own stylistic byways.It shows Eddie Bo taking part in the evolution of soul that would shortly give birth to funk.James Brown band and marinated them in the slightly lazy (but delicious) flavors of the Big Easy.New Orleans or anywhere else for that matter.Some of them are going for crazy money, and other Bo is one of New Orleans true musical geniuses, from 1955 to present day he has recorded and worked for over 40 different labels, some majors, some of them so small that very little is known about them and a lot of them were his own.He worked with the top singers and musicians of the region including The Lastie brothers, Alvin 'Red' Tyler, James Black, Tommy Ridgley, Johnny Adams, Art Neville amongst others.So why have you never heard of him?The last five years have seen unprecedented interest in his music with voices across the world crying out to know more about this master and for him
