Haile Selassie I biography, Haile Selassie I discography
ANCESTRY
Emperor Haile Selassie I was born on July 23,1894,as Lij Taffari Makonnen at Enjersa Goro, just outside
the city of Harrar.Ras Makonnen was the son of Dejazmatch Wolde Michael Wolde Melekot,
a noble of Doba in northern Shewa.Ras Makonnen was thus
the first cousin of Emperor Menelik II and a member of the Solomonic Dynasty.Woizero Yeshimebet his wife was the daughter of Dejazmatch
Ali AbaJiffar, an Oromo chieftan of Wollo, and his wife Woizero Welete Giorgis Yimeru, a Gurage and Amhara
woman once married to Ras Darge Sahle Selassie (Menelik II's uncle).Kegnazmatch Sehalu Yilma, Kegnazmatch Asfaw Yilma and Dejazmatch Mengesha Yilma, and a daughter Her Imperial Highness Princess Yeshashework Yilma.Taffari to Fitawrari Haile Selassie. The boys were given the traditional education given to the children of Ethiopia's aristocracy. They were ordained deacons and served as such at Harrar's St.Later,
Ras Makonnen approached a French Catholic Capuchin monk residing in Harrar, Father Jaresseau to teach the
boys along western lines. He believed it was unfair to the girl to marry her to a man of his comparatively advanced years.Empress Taitu took deep offense and never forgave the Ras.PATH TO THE THRONE
At the age of thirteen, Lij Taffari Makonnen was created a Dejazmatch by his father, and given
the district of Garra Muleta as his fief.Although Ras Makonnen may have tried to establish his wishes in such a manner, ultimate decisions as to the succession of the Harrar governorate belonged to his cousin Emperor Menelik II.The Ras died at Kulibi on his way to Addis Ababa from Harrar possibly of typhus. He was taken back to Harrar and buried at St.He summoned Dejazmatch Taffari, and Ras Makonnen's entourage from Harrar to Addis Ababa where Dejazmatch Yilma was already residing.Empress Taitu was especially opposed to Taffari inheriting Harrar, arguing that he was far too young.Instead, she argued for the apointment of the elder son of Ras Makonnen, Dejazmatch Yilma, who had been at the Imperial Court for several years, and was now appointed to succeed his father as governor. The Empress also arranged for Yilma to marry her neice Woizero Aselefech.Dejazmatch Balcha Saffo (known as Abba Nega) was briefly appointed to the Harrar governorate, but proved to be extremely unpopular with the local officials who had long identified with Ras Makonnen and his sons.It was to be her last official act, as the very next day, the nobility led by Fitawrari Hapte Giorgis and Dejazmatch Gebre Selassie Baria Gabr, deposed her, and put power in the hands of the Lord Regent Ras Tessema Nadew. They limited the Empress to caring for the stricken Emperor. He resentfully agreed to allow
his niece to give birth, but ordered her to leave immediately afterwards.German leanings encouraged this dissension. Finally, the Nobility, led by Fitawrari Hapte Giorgis, became convinced that Lij Eyasu
had secretly converted to Islam, and following a two day meeting at Jan Meda in Addis Ababa (the Imperial Parade Ground),
the nobility convinced the reluctant Coptic Archbishop, Abune Mattiwos, to declare Lij Eyasu an apostate, and release them
from their oaths of loyalty to him.Helena)which fell on September 27,1916.Her Imperial Highness Menen Asfaw, Crown Princess of Ethiopia.Ras Taffari Makonnen began to institute wide spread reforms in order to bring Ethiopia into the modern age.Addis Ababa for former slaves as well. The King of Italy invested the Crown Prince of Ethiopia with the Order of the Annunziata, which entitled him to be called a "cousin" of the King of Italy (Something that would be regarded with such irony only a few years later). He met the Pope as well, and received an honorary degree from Cambridge University. The visit was very successful in that respect. The Ethiopian delegation caused quite a stir in Europe and aroused the interest
of many who were not aware of the only ancient independent state in Africa.Much comment was made on the impeccable aristocratic
manners and traditions of the delegation, and on the enlightened attitude of the Crown Prince. His desire to bring progress and education to his people was applauded in the European press. He asked if he could speak French or German, again the answer was no.King George burst out laughing and took a great liking to Ras Hailu, Prince of Gojjam. His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Ras Tafari Makonnen, Regent of the Ethiopian Empire preparing to meet Pope Pius XI in audience, accompanied by the Vatican secretary of State, Ethiopian Princes and nobility, and with clergy and nobility of the Vatican state, 1923.Upon his return, the Crown Prince was able to please the Empress with the news that the British government would be returning one of the crowns of Emperor Tewodros II that the Napier expedition had siezed and carried off from Magdala in 1867.He did have to face however the deepening hostility to his modernizing zeal on the part of the conservative camp led by Fitarwrari Hapte Giorgis (who had not accompanied him abroad) and the Archbishop Abune Mattiwos who was displeased with the delegations call on the Pope in Rome. She was therefore never an effective leader for the forces of conservatism.Palace by conservative elements in the cabinet, possibly with the Empresses knowledge and agreement.Progressives and modernizers in the nobility and the army held an unprecedented demonstation in support of Ras Taffari on the grounds of the palace. In order to appease the angry progressives who rallied to the Crown Prince, the Empress agreed to crown him king.In November of 1928, Empress Zewditu of Ethiopia crowned Taffari Makonnen as
King and Heir to the Throne of Ethiopia. It was an unusual arangment as the King would remain in the capital with the Empress, and that no territory
such as Wollo or Gondar was given him with the title.Ethiopian born Bishops Petros, Abraham, Markos and Lukas were all consicrated in Alexandria and arrived in Ethiopia soon afterwards.Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria to Ethiopia, he consicrated the Echege of Debre Libanos, as the fifth Ethiopian born Bishop with the name Sauiros.Dejazmatch Balcha Saffo, known popularly by his horse name of "Abba Nefso", an Oromo unich who had been raised by Emperor Menelik and placed in several powerful posts by that Emperor. He had briefly succeeded Dejazmatch Yilma Makonnen as governor of Harrar, but upon his replacement by the then Dejazmatch Taffari in 1910, he had been appointed Governor of the wealthy gold, ivory and coffee producing province of Sidamo. Now he arrived in Addis Ababa from Sidamo with a very large number of well armed men.Dejazmatch Balcha and his army encamped at Nifas Silk, just outside
the city, and the presence of Balcha's large Army was regarded as being a direct challenge to the king, in support of the Empress and the conservatives she supported. On the second
evening after his arrival, Dejazmatch Balcha and his leading officers were invited by King Taffari to come to the Imperial Palace for dinner. When the Dejazmatch and his followers finally returned to Nifas Silk, they were stunned to find that
his entire army had vanished. They were instructed to immediately accept payment in the silver coins, surrender their weapons and go home.Within a short time, the soldiers had surrendered their weapons, recieved their payment and were headed back to their farms and families in the
south. The country was abuzz with the many changes that were taking place. They had later conspired to remove
Lij Eyasu and place his own wife on the throne on the condition that he her husband separate from her, and sent him to far off Gondar to make sure his influence on the Empress would be minimal. The Empress pleaded with her husband repeatedly to no avail. The second flight then took place in which a bomb was dropped on Ras Gugsas army and caused panic, and the bitter battle of Anchiem began.Quiet celebration of this victory had barely begun in Addis Ababa the next day when suddenly the capital was plunged into deep mourning with the death of Empress Zewditu herself.Zewditu's death was a shock to her subjects.Nevertheless, this event marked the end of the conservative feudal era in
Ethiopia, and the beginging of the new centralized beaurocratic Empire.Conquering Lion of Judah+
, King of Kings of Ethiopia. His wife became Empress Menen of Ethiopia, and his children all assumed the titles of Prince and Princess. On November 1st, 1930, the new Emperor of Ethiopia paid his respects to his illustrous predicesor, by erecting a equistrian statue of Emperor Menelik II infront of the Cathedral of St.After an all night vigil at the Cathedral, the foreign guests arrived to witness the anointing and crowning of the Imperial couple and the anointing of the crown prince.Around the outdoor dias were four large live lions, chained to the platform on which the Emperor sat with gold chains. The Emperor and Empress were crowned outdoors infront of the Cathedral and enthroned there, as canons boomed a 100 gun salute, church bells rang, women ulultated and men cheered. The Imperial family, under a large portable gold encrusted canopy of red velvet, the upper nobility and clergy along with the foreign delegations then entered the cathedral to hear mass. The coronation was witnessed by royalty and important dignitaries from around the world.Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, son of King George V,
brother the future Kings Edward VIII and George VI, and uncle to Queen Elizabeth II.Prince Eugenio Di Savoia, Duke of Udine, cousin of the King of Italy. The King of Belgium was represented by Monseiur Gerard, the King of Sweden by Baron Dabells, the Queen of the Netherlands by Mr.Unhar Hersmadd, the Emperor of Japan by Baron Ezbur, the King of Egypt by Tewfik Nessim Pasha, the Greek government by Count Metaxis, the government of Turkey by Muhitin Pasha, the government of Poland by Count David Bazaki, the President of Germany by Baron Balthaussen, and the President of the United States by Mr.The international press was also present, a first for Ethiopian coronations. The pagents did not go off without a glitch however.During welcoming ceremonies for the foreign delegations there was one significant event that caused minor disruption. As Crown Prince in 1923, the Emperor had visited Jerusalem. While there, the Armenian Patriarch and Catholicos of Jerusalem had met him, and told him of the plight of the large number of Armenian orphans being raised by the Patriarchate, and the financial dificulty this had placed on the patriarchate. The then Crown Prince had decided to help the Armenian Patriarch by taking some of these orphans to Ethiopia to raise them in a country that shared the Oriental Orthodox heritage of their dead parents.During the welcoming ceremonies before the coronation, they would play the national anthem of which ever delegation was arriving at the train station. The Emperor decided to put the matter before the senior princes and nobles in council to decide how to punish the Armenians for disobeying the monarch. The Emperor agreed and the Armenians were allowed to disobey the Emperor and refuse to play the Turkish National Anthem as it was in violation of the commandment "Honor your Father and Mother".Ras Birru Wolde Gabriel at the time of Emperor Haile Selassie's coronoation. He ordered the drafting of the first written constitution for the Empire, which
was completed and promulgated in 1931.The First Imperial Constitution, which borrowed heavily from the Meiji Constitution of Japan, provided for a Parliament for the first time in Ethiopian History. The lower house was made up of land owners, and was also filled by appointment of the Emperor. As was traditional, the Supreme Court of Ethiopia remained the Emperor's Chilot, where the Emperor heard the cases himself and passed down the final verdict. The ministries were staffed with men who shared the Emperors progressive views, and advisors were employed from abroad to help them in their work.Emperor Haile Selassie
being the type of person he was, however, was not one to let others do the work of state. After 1961, however,
the Emperor decided to appoint a Prime Minister to take on more of the Policy formulation role in government.Early in his reign though, there were not enough educated Ethiopians to take on the responsibilities this would entail. He pled illness and was not present for the signing of the constitution, and did not sign it.The Emperor encouraged the spread of modern education, and sponsored many young Ethiopians to go to Europe to study. He built the Amsale Guenet Palace, and housed the visiting Duke of Abruzzi there, and then recieved the Crown Prince of Sweden Gustav Adolph and his wife for a state visit and housed them in the newly built Guenete Leul Palace, both built on the site of his fathers old Addis Ababa house.Ethiopia sought to emulate Japan in it's development strategies, something that the colonial powers in the region were not very pleased about.Empress Menen (possibly shortly before the birth of H.Ras Hailu Tekle Haimanot, Prince of Gojjam
It was during this time, late 1931, that Lij Eyasu escaped from his detention at Selale.Eyasuism would
continue to be a thorn in the side of the government.Prince of Gojjam, Leul Ras Hailu Tekle Haimanot, in concert with the Italian colonial authorities in Eritrea. The Gojjami prince, who previously had been convicted of conspiracy to murder someone, was now sentenced to life imprisonment.Ras Hailu was a fabulously wealthy man, he may have well been the richest man in the Empire.Upon Tekle Haimanot's death, his widow Laquech Gebre Medhin, sister of Emperor Tekle Giorgis III, wanted to rule Gojjam as successor to her husband as did both Bezabih and Bellew who were at court with Menelik. Her argument was that her stepsons had behaved badly toward their father and so she should be considered his heir.Menelik had chosen to recognize Tekle Haimanot as king of Gojjam because that title had been granted by Yohannis IV, but he didn't create any
Kings elsewhere as he could have.Lij Eyasu had created his father King of Wollo, and Zewditu had made her cousin Wolde Giorgis King of Gondar, but the new Emperor was having none of that. Thus Rases Seyoum Mengesha and Gugsa Araya (succeeded by Dejazmatch Haile Selassie Gugsa) in Tigrai, Hailu, Bezabih, and Bellew (succeeded by Hailu Bellew) in Gojjam, and Kassa Hailu, and Imiru Haile Selassie in Shewa, made up a tier of "Princes of the Blood".Ras Hailu was resentful, and his aid to Lij Eyasu was probably in reaction to this.Foriegn advisors were appointed to assist in advising and helping to set up a modern administration and beurocracy in the various ministries. The Emperor continued to promote men of humble background to positions of the highest responsibility at the expence of the traditional nobility. The aristocracy was increasingly resentful of the commoners that the Emperor seemed to favor, and they campaigned for him to return to appointing people from the noble classes to powerful posts. The Emperor decided to balance one group against the other by creating the Crown Council.Empress Menen had been married three times prior to her marriage to Emperor Haile Selassie. Her husband immediately before the Emperor had been Ras Leulseged Atnafseged. From her second marriage, she had two more children, Jantirar Gebre Igziabiher Amede and Woizero Desta Amede.Lij Eyasu ordered his niece to marry his maternal cousin, and involved Taffari's cousin Dejazmatch Imiru in escorting Woizero Menen to Harrar after he ordered her separation from Ras Leulseged. He may have promoted the match after the couple first met at his home in Addis Ababa and were smitten, and he realized the political advantages to him.Whatever one believes, what is certain is that their marriage proved very successful and long lasting.Theirs would prove to be a remarkable personal and political partnership. The Emperor and Empress celebrated their golden wedding aniversary in 1960.Haile Selassie was born Tafari Makonnen in Ethiopia in 1892.He married Wayzaro Menen in 1911, daughter of Emperor Menelik II.By becoming prince (Ras), Tafari became the focus of the Christian majority's approval over Menelik's grandson, Lij Yasu, because of his progressive nature and the latter's unreliable politics. He was named regent and heir to the throne in 1917, but had to wait until the death of the Empress Zauditu to assume full kingship.Tafari traveled to such cities as Rome, Paris, and London to become the first Ethiopian ruler to ever go abroad. This paper will focus on Selassie's progressive politics and attempts to modernize Ethiopia through technological advances and membership in the world community.Ethiopia was a culturally and resourcefully rich land recognized by the European colonial powers as sovereign from as early as 1900.Selassie's predecessor expanded his empire successfully in the 1880's and formed treaties with the Italians, who recognized the imperial potential of northern Africa.Relations became strained, however, in the 1890's when Britain and Italy agreed that Ethiopia should fall under Italian influence.Despite occasional conflicts, Ethiopia under Menelik remained sovereign, and thus we see a stage set for the leadership of Selassie: a free Ethiopia with Italian, British, and French colonies nearby, and an Italian will to expand its territorial claims when its power and opportunity arise. He further acted to seek approval of other nations by emancipating existing slaves and their children and created government bureaus to do so.Much of Selassie's loyalty was fostered by the building of schools, universities, and newspapers, as well as increased availability of electricity, telephone, and public health services. As late as 1928, motions of peace were made by Italy, but it seemed as though Mussolini wanted Eritrea only as a strategic base for future conquest in Africa.Marcus, 108) In December 1934, there was an incident seemingly provoked by Italian forces which involved an Ethiopian escort to the Welwel wells used by desert nomads. While Selassie was in exile, the Italian forces established new government and attempted to crush the continuing revolts by massacres and segregation. In Britain for most of his exile, he attempted to raise public support for the plight of his country, but gained little attention until Italy entered the war on the side of Germany in June 1940.Addis Ababa on May 5, 1941, but fighting continued on Ethiopian soil until January 1942.During the years of war, Selassie controlled internal affairs, but with required British approval.Upon his return he, without consulting Britain, appointed a seven member cabinet and a governor of Addis Ababa. The British aided Ethiopia in training a new army with advisers, which helped him substitute experienced administrators in place of traditional nobility, but he rejected British help whenever the reforms threatened his own personal control over his country. The modernization's made by Britain concerning currency, industrialization, and bureaucracy made Selassie see the major importance in modernizing in order to survive. He attempted to secure Eritrea as Ethiopian, but the decades of Italian influence imparted an independent sense on the part of the Eritreans, and the British denied his wishes.Selassie backed down from his new tax brackets and issued a flat tithe to all noble landowners who resisted, but this merely passed the tax on to the tenants of the regions, who carried the entire burden of taxation.Another huge reform made by Selassie was the 1948 change in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. After World War II, Selassie saw himself as a humble, but emerging, world leader.United States, and later sought and received aid from such diversified nations as Italy, China, West Germany, Taiwan, Yugoslavia, Sweden, and the Soviet Union.Prouty, 93) The new constitution emphasized Selassie's religious right to power, and while it promised several inherently American rights (freedom of speech, assembly, and due process), the Ethiopian population lacked the literacy and independence from local nobility to really appreciate its declarations.Addis Ababa in December 1960, while Selassie was abroad on one of his frequent diplomatic missions.Prouty, 40) While initially successful, the coup led by the Imperial Bodyguard, police chief, and intellectual radicals lacked the public support necessary, and fell upon the return of the emperor and his assertion of the loyalty of the army and air force, as well as the church. The coup's failure did, however lead to the polarization of the traditional and progressive factions, and the public awareness of the need to improve the economic, social, and political position of the population.Selassie had organized his military so that each branch opposed each other in class, benefits, or treatment in order to keep one from becoming so powerful as to threaten his power. It was perceived that the droughts and famines within the army and the public were intentional, and that civil freedoms were increasingly disappearing.Mutiny in the army branch of the military began on January 12, 1974, and was followed by several provincial takeovers in February. The emperor's estate and palace were nationalized and in August, Selassie was directly accused of covering up famine of the early 1970's which killed hundreds of thousands of people. On September 12th, he was formally deposed and arrested and power was given to the Derg, formally renamed the Provisional Military Administrative Council. In August 1975, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie died under questionable circumstances under house arrest, and was secretly buried.Prouty, 93) His early legacy of Ethiopian pride and sovereignty, had transformed itself to a major struggle of the old versus the new orders. The old order was effectively destroyed by 1977, and the Derg began its new agenda of socialism in the Ethiopian government.Los Angeles: UC Press, 1987.Prouty, Chris, and Eugene Rosenfield.Reflections on Haile Selassie
The facts of his life are well known.Haile Selassie's influence
on the world is his most enduring legacy. These the Ethiopian Emperor did not lack. For a hereditary
monarch, this should not be the case.Haile Selassie
was a devoted husband and father. His sons, Sahle Selassie, Makonnen, and Asfa Wossen,
had a great sense of duty to their father and to their people.Of his daughters, Princess Tenagne, in particular, excercised
various official duties.Haile Selassie ascended the throne in the era of polar exploration
and slow communication. Some people still called the country Abyssinia. That a country as backward
as Italy, whose widespread poverty prompted the emigration of
millions, would seek to devour a nation like Ethiopia, was an
irony too subtle to raise eyebrows outside the most sophisticated
intellectual circles. With British backing, Haile Selassie returned
to defeat the Italian army which, in the event, the Allies never
viewed as much more than a nuisance. To the Ethiopians, it was as much a moral
victory as a military one.It prompted essentially ineffectual international trade sanctions
against a European nation but, like the Battle of Adwa four decades
earlier, represented in a tangible way one of the few occasions
in the modern era that an African nation defied the arrogance
of a European one.It was during one such voyage, in 1960, that he had to rush
home to confront an attempted overthrow of the existing order.Internationally, however, his prestige did not suffer. The Emperor established the Organisation of African Unity (OAU)
in 1963, with a headquarters in Addis Ababa.Marxism than
Russia's had been in 1917.Communism's ultimate social and economic
failure, in Ethiopia as well as in Russia, certainly indicates
democracy's superiority, whether that democracy is embodied by
a republic or a constitutional monarchy.Note: some videos not suitable for minors may still appear in search results. The video has been added to your playlist. This video will appear on your blog shortly.Thank you for sharing this video!Change this to see only comments above a certain value.Jesus was condemned to crucificion so yeah, there was debate. He believed in modern politics, diplomacy and peaceful deals,He is the man who came much earlier ahead of the time! The name Lucifer represent war, jealousy and lusty mentality. The lord thy God said "I go by many names".There is only one God with many names. My God has many names and through is spirit and love I shall rejoice.CARING, SHARING, KINDNESS AND MERCY, THE ITAL BALANCE,RAS TAFARIOne Love and Respect everytime!Would you like to comment?I, Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, am here today to claim that justice
which is due to my people, and the assistance promised to it eight months ago, when fifty
nations asserted that aggression had been committed in violation of international
treaties. There is no precedent for a Head of State himself speaking in this assembly. But there
is also no precedent for a people being victim of such injustice and being at present
threatened by abandonment to its aggressor. Also, there has never before been an example
of any Government proceeding to the systematic extermination of a nation by barbarous
means, in violation of the most solemn promises made by the nations of the earth that
there should not be used against innocent human beings the terrible poison of harmful
gases. It is my duty to inform the Governments assembled in Geneva, responsible as they are
for the lives of millions of men, women and children, of the deadly peril which threatens
them, by describing to them the fate which has been suffered by Ethiopia. It is not only
upon warriors that the Italian Government has made war.Their effects were but slight. It was at the time when the operations for the encircling of Makalle were taking place
that the Italian command, fearing a rout, followed the procedure which it is now my duty
to denounce to the world.Groups of nine,
fifteen, eighteen aircraft followed one another so that the fog issuing from them formed a
continuous sheet. It was thus that, as from the end of January, 1936, soldiers, women,
children, cattle, rivers, lakes and pastures were drenched continually with this deadly
rain. That was its chief method of warfare. The deadly rain
that fell from the aircraft made all those whom it touched fly shrieking with pain.In tens of thousands, the victims of the Italian mustard gas fell.It is in
order to denounce to the civilized world the tortures inflicted upon the Ethiopian people
that I resolved to come to Geneva.None other than myself and my brave companions in arms
could bring the League of Nations the undeniable proof. For 20 years past, either as Heir Apparent, Regent of the Empire, or as Emperor, I have
never ceased to use all my efforts to bring my country the benefits of civilization, and
in particular to establish relations of good neighbourliness with adjacent powers. In its report of October 5th 193S, the Committee of Thirteen recognized my effort and
the results that I had achieved. It does not seem that in Ethiopia today there is more disorder and
insecurity than in 1923.Indeed the Rome Government, as it has today openly
proclaimed, has never ceased to prepare for the conquest of Ethiopia. The Italian Goverment asserts that for 14 years it has been preparing
for its present conquest. It therefore recognizes today that when it supported the
admission of Ethiopia to the League of Nations in 1923, when it concluded the Treaty of
Friendship in 1928, when it signed the Pact of Paris outlawing war, it was deceiving the
whole world. The Ethiopian Government was, in these solemn treaties, given additional
guarantees of security which would enable it to achieve further progress along the
specific path of reform on which it had set its feet, and to which it was devoting all its
strength and all its heart.Wal incident, in December, 1934, came as a thunderbolt to me.The Italian
provocation was obvious and I did not hesitate to appeal to the League of Nations. This secret agreement, contrary to
the obligations of the Covenant, has exerted a great influence over the course of events. The time had to come, thus all sorts of difficulties were placed in
the way with a view to breaking up the procedure; of conciliation and arbitration. All
kinds of obstacles were placed in the way of that procedure.Ethiopian Government sincerely thought that an era of
friendly relations might be opened with Italy. The Assembly was informed by the report of the Committee of Thirteen, dated
October 5th, 1935, of the details of the events which occurred after the month of
December, 1934, and up to October 3rd, 1935.Throughout the whole of that period, moreover, the despatch of Italian troops to East
Africa was proceeding. These shipments of troops were represented to the Council by the
Italian Government as necessary for the defense of its colonies menaced by Ethiopia's
preparations. It invariably stated that it would faithfully carry out the
arbitral award even if the decision went against it.On October 3rd, 1935, the Italian troops invaded my territory. In my desire to maintain peace I had, following the example
of a great country in Europe on the eve of the Great War, caused my troops to withdraw
thirty kilometres so as to remove any pretext of provocation. What real assistance was given to Ethiopia by the fifty two nations who had
declared the Rome Government guilty of a breach of the Covenant and had undertaken to
prevent the triumph of the aggressor? My confidence had been
confirmed by the repeated declarations made in the Council to the effect that aggression
must not be rewarded, and that force would end by being compelled to bow before right. What have become of the promises made to me as long ago as October, 1935?Their connections with Italy impelled them to refuse
to take any measures whatsoever in order to stop Italian aggression. As soon as any measure which was likely to be
rapidly effective was proposed, various pretexts were devised in order to postpone even
consideration of the measure.Ethiopian warriors asked only for means to defend themselves. What, then, in practice, is the meaning of Article 16 of the
Covenant and of collective security? At the
present moment this is the chief, if not the only means of supply of the Italian armies of
occupation. The rules of neutrality should have prohibited transports intended for Italian
forces, but there is not even neutrality since Article 16 lays upon every State Member of
the League the duty not to remain a neutral but to come to the aid not of the aggressor
but of the victim of aggression.Has the Covenant been respected? These are the circumstances in
which at the request of the Argentine Government, the Assembly of the League of Nations
meets to consider the situation created by Italian aggression.Assembly today is a much wider one.It is the
confidence that each State is to place in international treaties. It is the principle of the equality of States on the one hand, or
otherwise the obligation laid upon smail Powers to accept the bonds of vassalship.Have the signatures appended to a
Treaty value only in so far as the signatory Powers have a personal, direct and immediate
interest involved? No subtlety can change the problem or shift the grounds of the discussion. It is in all
sincerity that I submit these considerations to the Assembly.Should it happen that a strong Government finds it may with
impunity destroy a weak people, then the hour strikes for that weak people to appeal to
the League of Nations to give its judgment in all freedom. At no time, and under no circumstances could sanctions that were
intentionally inadequate, intentionally badly applied, stop an aggressor. When Ethiopia requested and requests that she should be given financial
assistance, was that a measure which it was impossible to apply whereas financial
assistance of the League has been granted, even in times of peace, to two countries and
exactly to two countries who have refused to apply sanctions against the aggressor?Does this initiative not mean in practice the abandonment of Ethiopia to the
aggressor? On the very eve of the day when I was about to attempt a supreme effort in the
defense of my people before this Assembly does not this initiative deprive Ethiopia of one
of her last chances to succeed in obtaining the support and guarantee of States Members? Is it the
Covenant that needs reform? What undertakings can have any value if the will to keep them
is lacking?And the
great Powers who have promised the guarantee of collective security to small States on
whom weighs the threat that they may one day suffer the fate of Ethiopia, I ask what
measures do you intend to take?Representatives of the World I have come to Geneva to discharge in your midst the most
painful of the duties of the head of a State. But the procession was still intensely emotional, with many people weeping openly as the haunting chant of Orthodox prayers rang out over the city. His body has now been laid to rest at the cathedral where other members of the Ethiopian Imperial family have been buried."Although they killed you and threw your body in an unmarked grave, they could not tarnish your image," said an Orthodox priest during the mass.Haile Selassie ruled Ethiopia for 45 years before he was overthrown by the Marxist dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1974.More than 25 years have passed since his death, but his legacy still lives on.When Haile Selassie was enthroned in 1930, he became not only emperor of Ethiopia, but also god to the fledgling Rastafarian movement in Jamaica.Ras Lumumba, a Sudanese Rastafarian who came to settle in Ethiopia three years ago, says the Emperor is their Messiah or Jah."Haile Selassie is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and the conquering lion of the Tribe of Judah. He is everything to us Rastafarians and we will never accept that he is dead."Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page.April 1937
THE FAILURE OF HAILE SELASSIE AS EMPEROR
When the facts of history are written Haile Selassie of Abyssinia will go down as a great coward who ran away from his country to save his skin and left the millions of his countrymen to struggle through a terrible war that he brought upon them because of his political ignorance and his racial disloyalty. It is a pity that a man of the limited intellectual calibre and weak political character like Haile Selassie became Emperor of Abyssinia at so crucial a time in the political history of the world.EVERY NEGRO ASHAMED
Every Negro who is proud of his race must be ashamed of the way in which Haile Selassie surrendered himself to the white wolves of Europe. These statements may be considered very severe, and in fact, they are. This little misguided Emperor could not realise that he held in his hands the political trust of the hundreds of millions of Negroes of the world, men and women, who were looking up toward the firm establishment of political sovereignty, and that Ethiopia, like Liberia and Haiti were to them prizes of glory to be perpetuated and strengthened in the maintenance of the dignity of that black race that other men have claimed to be incompetent, inferior and unworthy, which every black man must disprove.Rases against the Italian invaders.Indeed Haile Selassie has proved the incompetence of the Negro for political authority, but thank God there are Negroes who realise that Haile Selassie did not represent the truest qualities of the Negro race. How could he, when he wanted to play white?State of black men than a free democratic country where the black citizens could rise to the same opportunities as white citizens in their democracies? The Negroes of Abyssinia and of the world are satisfied however that Abyssinia was not conquered by Italy and the European forces of Mussolini.Abyssinia was only conquered by the black levies of Italy.Every battle that the Italians won in Abyssinia resulted from the advanced charge of the Askaris. It was black men fighting black men, and this was made possible in Abyssinia because the regime of Haile Selassie had given a bad taste to the mouth, not only of the blacks of Abyssinia but of those of the surrounding territories. We had hoped that if Abyssinia had won that we would have forced the Government of Abyssinia to free the black whom they held as slaves. That is why it is preferable for the Abyssinian Negroes and the Negroes of the world to work for the restoration and freedom of the country without the assistance of Haile Selassie, because at best he is but a slave master. The Negroes of the Western World whose forefathers suffered for three hundred years under the terrors of slavery ought to be able to appreciate what freedom means.Surely they cannot feel justified in supporting any system that would hold their brothers in slavery in another country whilst they are enjoying the benefits of freedom elsewhere. The Emperor who has been exiled in Europe must have seen the civilization of Europe. It has been reported that he is leaving England for Syria, where a large number of Abyssinian refugees are living. There is an interpretation that the decision to leave England and to live among "his people?"After all, Haile Selassie is just an ordinary man like any other human being.Negroes who have the dignity of their race at heart resent the impertinence of anyone holding the blacks as slaves.Haile Selassie ought to realise this and abolish his foolish dream of being an Emperor of slaves and serfs and try to be an Emperor of noble men, and for him to be that he must himself be the noblest of them all.Ras Desta proved to be the Lord, the Nobleman of Ethiopia whilst Halle Selassie proved a cringing coward! The Origins Of RastafariLearn about the origins of Rastafari and the environment that influenced its origins. What Do Rastafarians BelieveA brief overview to the basic belief system of Rastafari.Important Books In Rastafarian TheologyAn overview of the books, including the Holy Piby, that have shaped Rastafari.Marcus GarveyHere is the main article many Garveyites quote on why Marcus Garvery never endorsed Haile Selassie as the Black Messiah. Here is the article many Rastafarians Refer to as the Prohecy by Marcus Garvey. Please select a mail list to subscribe to.
