I Cactus biography, I Cactus discography

Cactaceae, native to the Americas. They are often used as ornamental plants, but some are also crop plants.Cacti are distinctive and unusual plants, which are adapted to extremely arid and hot environments, showing a wide range of anatomical and physiological features which conserve water.Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.Cactus flowers are large, and like the spines and branches arise from areoles.Closeup image of a cactus flower (Echinopsis spachiana) showing large number of stamens.Pereskioideae (see image), the leaves are greatly or entirely reduced. They have stamens in great numbers (from 50 to 1,500, rarely fewer).Echinocactus grusonii) reaches a height of 2.Distribution Cacti are almost exclusively New World plants. This plant is thought to be a relatively recent colonist in the Old World (within the last few thousand years), probably carried as seeds in the digestive tracts of migratory birds. Many other cacti have become naturalized to similar environments in other parts of the world after being introduced by people.Valley of Mexico has one of the richest occurrences of cacti in the world.Cacti are believed to have evolved in the last 30 to 40 million years.Long ago, the Americas were joined to the other continents, but separated due to continental drift.Significant distance between the continents was only achieved in around the last 50 million years. This is, however, due to parallel evolution; none of these are closely related to the Cactaceae.Pereskia grandifolia: Pereskia is a weakly succulent genus, which also possesses leaves, and is believed to be very similar to the ancestor of all cacti.Barrel Cactus growing on a cliff in the Mojave Desert.Certain cactus species have also developed ephemeral leaves, which are leaves that last for a short period of time when the stem is still in its early stages of development.Opuntia ficus indicia, better known as the prickly pear. The spines grow from specialized structures called areoles. Many species of cactus have long, sharp spines.Enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis and store water.Much like many other plants that have waxy coatings on their leaves, Cacti often have a waxy coating on their stems to prevent water loss. This works by preventing water from spreading on the surface and allowing water to trickle down the stem to be absorbed by the roots and used for photosynthesis. The inside of the stem is either spongy or hollow (depending on the cactus).By reducing its surface area, the body of the plant is also protected against excessive sunlight.Saguaro cactus in Arizona, USA.Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) can absorb up to 3,000 litres of water in ten days. Most cacti have very shallow roots that can spread out widely close to the surface of the ground to collect water, an adaptation to infrequent rains; in one examination, a young Saguaro only 12 cm.The areole appears like a cushion with a diameter of up to 15 mm.The two buds of the areoles can lie very close together, but they can also sometimes be separated by several centimeters.Like other succulents in the families of the Crassulaceae, Agavaceae (agaves), Euphorbiaceae (euphorbias), Liliaceae (lilies), Orchidaceae (orchids) and Vitaceae (vines), cacti reduce water loss through transpiration by Crassulacean acid metabolism.During the day the stomata are closed and the plant releases the stored CO2 and uses it for photosynthesis. There are also specialisations for bats, humming birds and particular species of bees. The duration of flowering is very variable. Many flowers, for example those of Selenicereus grandiflorus (Queen of the Night) are only fully open for two hours at night.Carl Spitzweg: The Cactus Lover, c.Larco Museum Collection Lima, Peru.Tenochtitlan (the earlier name of Mexico City) means "place of the sacred cactus."Economic exploitation of the cactus can also be traced back to the Aztecs. The North American Indians exploit the alkaloid content of many cacti for ritual purposes. Some cacti are also of pharmaceutical significance.Linnaeus grouped together as the genus "Cactus".From the beginning of the 20th century interest in cacti has increased steadily, interrupted only by the two world wars. Some countries have a rather contradictory attitude to species protection. In Mexico for example to be caught in the act of digging up cacti carries a prison sentence, but cactus habitats are destroyed for the construction of new roads and electricity lines. To be borne in mind here is that some cactus habitats have a total area of no more than 1,000 square meters. If this habitat is destroyed, either by construction or by plundering, the species growing there is lost for posterity if it is endemic (ie, growing in that one spot and nowhere else). The Moche people of ancient Peru worshiped agriculture and often depicted the cactus in their art.Uses Cacti, cultivated by people worldwide, are a familiar sight as potted plants, houseplants or in ornamental gardens in warmer climates. They often form part of xeriphytic (dry) gardens in arid regions, or raised rockeries.Numerous species have entered widespread cultivation, including members of Echinopsis, Mammillaria and Cereus among others.Cacti are commonly used for fencing material where there is a lack of either natural resources or financial means to construct a permanent fence. This is often seen in arid and warm climates, such as the Masai Mara in Kenya. As well as garden plants, many cacti have important commercial uses; some cacti bear edible fruit, such as the prickly pear and Hylocereus, which produces Dragon fruit or Pitaya.Opuntia are also used as host plants for cochineal bugs in the cochineal dye industry in Central America. However, as a word in Botanical Latin (as distinct from Classical Latin), "cactus" would follow standard Latin rules for pluralization and become "cacti", which has become the prevalent usage in English.Regardless, cactus is popularly used as both singular and plural, and is cited as both singular and plural by the Random House Unabridged Dictionary (2006).In search of the tallest cactus.New York: Thames and Hudson, 1997.This page was last modified 16:23, 22 January 2008.Biography Cactus was initially conceived in late 1969 as a supergroup of the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Rod Stewart. So Appice and Bogert brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day (born Russell Edward Davidson) from the Amboy Dukes.Shortly afterwards Rusty Day was fired from the group.Appice) and one live album (Live In Japan, released only in Japan) the band dissolved.Mike Pinera, formerly of Blues Image and Iron Butterfly, came in on guitar, along with Roland Robinson on bass and Jerry Norris on drums. The New Cactus Band soon disbanded. In the late '70s Rusty Day formed another version of Cactus in Orlando, where he had relocated. This version of Cactus featured Steve Dansby on guitar, Dan Keylon and later John Sauter on bass, Frankie Robbins and later Gary Moffatt on drums.Frankie Robbins' brother Dennis along with Dan Keylon also played with the Rockets and Jim McCarty. On March 6, 1982, Rusty Day died from gunshots as a victim of a drug deal gone bad.King's Blues Club in Times Square. This show was a warm up for the gig which sparked the reunion, an appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival in Norje, Sweden.Randy Pratt joined the band in NYC and Sweden on harmonica. The group has also released a new album, Cactus V.This page was last modified 23:49, 2 January 2008.Mexican restaurants around the Puget Sound.Tacoma News Tribune "Best Accessibility Guidelines."Cacti are relatively easy to grow. Most cacti are native to the Americas.Cacti vary from a few inches tall to giants that will eventually outgrow the space in your house. They may grow as upright columns, as spreading clumps, limited only by the size of their container, as hanging baskets or as thorny ornamental balls. They can live for many years. The stem is fleshy or succulent.Cacti exhibit beauty in their symmetry of form as well as in their brightly colored flowers.Too much water plus insects and mites are the main problems.Check new plants carefully for pests before purchase.Make sure that the spray you use is labeled for cacti and follow label directions carefully. When most people think of cacti, this type usually comes to mind. While many have beautiful and delicate flowers, they are mainly grown for their unusual shapes, colors and textures.Water them as any other houseplant that prefers to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, while the plants are dormant, they should be allowed to get very dry between waterings. The plant must never be permitted to stand in water.Arid climate cacti need bright sunlight.Windows facing south or west where they will receive direct sunlight for several hours each day are ideal. They should be repotted only as needed. When repotting be sure to wear heavy leather gloves or wrap the cactus in several layers of newspaper for handling. If the container is too large, the soil may stay moist and lead to rot. After repotting, wait several days before watering. An ideal placement for a cactus in winter would be a sunny cool room or near a window where it is cooler.Be sure to place them in partial shade for the first few weeks, allowing them to adjust to brighter light.Cacti can be propagated from seeds, cuttings, grafting or offsets. In winter, when dormant, the saucerlike body shrinks to a flat disk.Goat's Horn Cacti (Astrophytum capricorne): Wiry, gray to brown spines twist around this small cacti.Star Cactus (Astrophytum ornatum): Spherical when young to columnar when mature, ribs with cross bands of wooly scales between brown or yellow spines. This cactus is good for beginners. It has a solitary trunk and outstretched limbs that resembles arms.It makes a nice container plant when young. These cylindrical cacti are usually around 5 to 6 inches in diameter, but can grow up to a foot or more.Large flowers appear in summer on older specimens.Candy Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni): Distinctively patterned red and white spines and yellow, orange or red flowers. They have tiny barbed bristles on their stems that can cause more pain than larger spines and are difficult to see.The round stems are velvety green. The flowers are bright yellow.Rainbow Cacti (Echinocereus rigidissimus v.Chin Cacti (Gymnocalycium species): These small compact cacti are perfect for windowsills and limited spaces.Giant Snake or Crawling Log Cacti (Mammillaria matudae): Mature specimens develop into a low mound of long, snaking stems.Snowball Cushion Cactus (Mammillaria candida): Spherical cactus is greenish white, with felted pink spines.Golden Powder Puff (Parodia chrysacanthion): Mature plants are covered with golden spines and dense white wool on new growth.Small, yellow flowers appear in spring and summer.Column Cactus (Cereus uruguayanus): These upright cacti grow up to 3 to 6 feet indoors. The flowers are white with outer petals tipped various colors and open at night.Few people think of cacti living in some of the most humid conditions imaginable, but the very popular holiday flowering cacti (Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter cactus) are all in this group.Their appearance is very different from dry land cacti. Most have wide, flattened, green stems that look much like leaves, no thorns and are grown primarily for their profuse and colorful flowers. These cacti need bright but filtered light.Stop fertilizing Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti in September.Easter cacti can be fed all year long except when flowering. You can encourage flowering in holiday cacti by adjusting their nighttime temperature and the amount of light and water that they receive.Holiday cacti need long nights to flower.Temperatures above this range may result in growth but no flowers.Once flower buds form, increase water and temperature.Falling or yellow leaves may result if plants are too dry or they get too much sunlight.Thanksgiving cacti have segments with toothed or jagged edges.Easter Cactus (Rhipsalidopsis species): Easter cactus bears flowers at the stem joints and at the ends. They should to be treated the same as other holiday cacti but at different times of the year. The resting period for this group is from December through late March when plants should be kept cool and dry until the flower buds form.It is always better to use too little fertilizer than too much.Do not fertilize plants during December or January.Plants like to be rootbound before flowering.Flowers are 6 inches long or more and of many colors.Prepared by Karen Russ, HGIC Information Specialist, and Al Pertuit, Extension Floriculture Specialist, Clemson University. All
