s.Icons of Elegance: The Most Influential Shoe Designers of the 20th Century.This exhibit, which will be at the RAM through January 2008, was organized by the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada, and the Racine museum is the first and only U.Ours is a celebration of world culture from the bottom up.Here is a list of the chosen ones, each with an interesting fact or two about them and their shoes:Francois Pinet: Considered the first great shoe designer of the century, this Frenchman was known for his intricate floral embroidery, the blossoms in which could be easily identified from their detail.Pietro Yantorny: Essentially illiterate, Yantorny was known for perfect, individualized fit and materials that reflected the personality of the wearer.His shoes took years to create and cost hundreds of dollars.Andre Perugia: Son of a cobbler, this innovative designer created shoes for the rich and famous from Josephine Baker to Rita Hayworth and Princess Lilian of Belgium.His designs were inspired by the work of modern artists and architects.Salvatore Ferragamo: Born in Italy, Ferragamo worked in the United States from 1914 to 1927, where he popularized innovations such as the platform and the wedge heel.He, too, was a designer to Hollywood stars.He is known as the creator of the stiletto heel (1956) and for his embellishments with buckles, beads, lace and embroidery.Charles Jourdan: Jourdan and his three sons developed a shoemaking dynasty famous in the 1960s for their colorful shoes in funky styles.Maud Frizon: Originally a model for Perugia, Frizon wore every one of her shoe designs before allowing them to go into production.Manolo Blahnik: Starting out in the 1970s, Blahnik revived the stiletto heel and is known for the delicate lines of his designs.Christian Louboutin: Red soles are the trademark of this designer, who worked with Jourdan, Chanel, Frizon, Yves St.Laurent and Vivier throughout his career.RAM is closed on Mondays, federal holidays and Easter.The community is invited to walk through these exhibits and enjoy light refreshments and music along the way.Click here to view The Journal Times Terms of Use policy.This entire web site content copyright 2008, The Journal Times, 212 4th St.
