his music emanates from an extremely personal and private source,
and that critical attempts to lump him with the minimalists,
downtowners, New Romanticists or the "California School" are futile."Stylistic monikers are handles which make discussion of art easier. In 1970
he became a graduate assistant to Subotnick at Cal Arts and stayed
on to teach there for several years after receiving an MFA in
1971.Balinese flute (gambuh), and analogue synthesizers
with elaborate tape delay systems.Marshall performed this work widely in
Europe and the USA.He has since
developed a series of instrumental works which require real time
electronic manipulation through tape delay or digital processing. It was selected as one
of two official American entries for the 1985 UNESCO International
Composers Rostrum in Paris. The recent "Hidden Voices", commissioned by Nonesuch Records,
had its premiere at New Music America at The Brooklyn Academy of
Music in 1989.One of the main conceits of this piece is the simplicity
and purity of the solo voice over the wild, keening, often frenetic
choirs of vocal sounds he concocts through his electronic wizardry.Marshall's new work, "A Peaceable Kingdom", commissioned for the
Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group by Betty Freeman, uses a
chamber ensemble in concert with a tape part.More recent work has been with the Kronos Quartet ("Fog Tropes
II") and the singer Paul Hillier for whom "Sierran Songs" was written
in 1994 .In 1996 Marshall composed "Kingdom Come" on commission
from the American Composers Orchestra."Evensongs" for String quartet and taped
interludes was released on New Albion in 1996 along with his piano
quartet, "In My beginning is My End.""Dark Waters" and "Holy
Ghosts" were both written for oboist Libby Van Cleve and are
good examples of Marshall's use of live digital delays to create
rich tapestries of sound with haunting resonances of other times
and cultures. They were released on New Albion in 2000.Ingram Marshall has lived and worked extensively in the San Francisco
Bay Area.Morton Subotnick, Marshall went on to study gamelan
music in Bali and Java in 1971.Marshall has performed his own live electronic music
in the U.Early in his career, Ingram Marshall studied with a veritable who's who of electronic musicians, including Vladimir Ussachevsky, Davisowsky, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Morton Subotnick. While teaching at Cal Arts, Marshall fell in love with Indonesian music, studying Javanese and Balinese gamelan with master Jogjakartan musician KRT Wasitodipura.Gradual Requiem deals with questions of loss and lament, grief and resolution. In the featured section (Part Two), layers of piano and mandolin gradually swell together, repeating and elaborating on simple structures. While the acoustic instruments are electronically processed, Marshall uses electronics only as a means toward an expressive end.In 2001 Marshall returned with Dark Waters, another album of beautiful ambient work.Written for English horn and tape, the title track features oboist Libby Van Cleve.Marshall writes, "The English horn is amplified and processed through several digital delay devices and mixed live with the tape part. The 'low fi' sound and even the surface noise of the old acetate record, clearly heard at the very beginning of the piece, are essential to the dark qualities I tried to produce in this music."Other Suggestions:
