plan more
completely in place. After I posted on Friday afternoon
(about 4:55),
I got a call from the local television station. They interviewed Erin and took some
shots of
her jumping rope and hula hooping (did I tell you she received the
award for
best 2nd grade hula hooper in her class last week)?By 5:23 they
were
loading up and trying to figure out how to get back across town (a
twenty
minute drive on the best days) with the film so they could make the
6:00 deadline.Davis drug home and got three solid hours
of
sleep before he had to get up and play in a chess tournament.Elaine, Shirlene, D'Anna, Maddie, Karen formed a team, "Desparate
Housewives."Susan Honea and the rest of the incredible teachers and staff at Mary
Branch
Elementary also formed a team.It was great for Erin to waft back
and
forth between the different teams and to have so many of her friends
around
all evening. We lazed about and enjoyed the backyard.Nancy Aldredge said that you and Erin needed prayer shawls and explained what it was. That weekend several knitters gathered at the shop and began knitting. When someone would tire, the shawl was passed to someone else.As they knit, they prayed for all of you. When you wrap up in the shawls, you will be embraced by their prayers and know that there is a group of knitters here that remember you daily in their prayers.Needless to say this message really touched our hearts!I'm sure the law of large numbers will catch up with
us
eventually, but so far, we are making the trips with little or no
hassle (other
than the price of gas for an additional 400+ miles each week, the fact
that
I can get little or no work done on Tuesdays and Fridays, and that
frankly,
I'm pretty tired by the time we roll back into town). We made it back in time for
dance
at 4:00.Erin has felt especially good for the
last week.Mo Ranch was the height of family fun.Davis roamed around doing
all
his usual activities. She also playing for hours by the river,
hiked
the nature trail, visited the exotic pigeons, the butterfly garden, and
the
green houses. For the parent units there was mainly relaxing in
ways
that served each person's tastes. She has had little or no pain at all, and all of the medicine side
effects
seem to have resolved for now.Try not to worry all weekend. We will be at Relay for Life on Friday
evening. The trip to Houston yesterday was
smooth sailing. The Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe
on the way home.We received no calls
from
the nursing staff on the return trip, so presumably Erin's counts
remain "super."We'll get the exact numbers next Tuesday when we go back. She went directly to dancing when we
got back
into town.This
is really helpful since we are headed about four or five hours in the
other
direction for the weekend. We are going to Mo Ranch, west of
Hunt, for
a family weekend.Relay for Life for the
American
Cancer Society. After next Monday, Erin will have a
seven day
rest, where she doesn't take any medicine. She will have a CT
scan on
Friday, April 22.We are hoping for the news that her tumor is
the same
size or smaller, so that we can continue lenalidomide for another two
months
and so that we can know that Erin is vanquishing the beast once more.Happy 17th Birthday to our son,
Davis.Erin had a big weekend with mom and
Davis in
Nashville. They had such a big time that I think Erin barely noticed we weren't
there. She did run a little temperature (a bit
over
100) for a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon and went on to bed
before I
got home (since it was after 10:00 I wasn't surprised). At this
point,
she could be dealing with a virus or fever from her tumor. We'll
just
have to wait and see.We go to Houston tomorrow for
another
check up and blood draw.Davis played sooo well in his tournament and only lost
games against
opponents rated much higher than him (two were over 2000, which is 450
points
higher than Davis). It was nice to be away from the grind and
also
to see my dear, dear friends, Carla and Larry Elmore. We were back on the road by 2:00, just in time to
make it back to 4:00 dance class.Davis and I are preparing to leave
Thursday
afternoon for Nashville.Walter will take Erin down to Houston for her blood counts on Friday,
but
I probably won't update the web site until Monday or Tuesday next week.Erin's class is collecting aluminum
cans for
Relay for Life over the next two and a half weeks. If you live
locally
and have some cans you would like to contribute, let us know and we
will come
by and pick them up.He is
competing
in Current Events (I knew there was a reason he has his radio tuned to
KEOS
every waking moment) and Math (I assume). It means nothing
bad
has happened.Judy Moss was waiting for Erin at the
horse
barn as soon as we rolled into town yesterday afternoon. They got up into the
fort and
were shutting the door (which is just a large blue tarp that hangs in
front
of the entrance).Out plopped a snake, blocking their escape
route. It was doing its best to hide and
get over its enormous fright of being dumped out of its sleeping area
and screamed at.Every
once in a while (like at bedtime, after a long day) she needs a back
rub. We're hoping that the pain will resolve as the medicine has a chance to
work.Walter, Erin, and I rolled into town
about 12:45
this afternoon after successfully beginning Erin's new treatment. We
returned
to the hotel, ate dinner, and promptly fell asleep.IV) arm straight up in the air above her chest. We had one more blood draw this morning
before
we saw Houston in our rearview mirror.Erin is back in school,
Walter
and I are back at work, and Davis is glad we are all back. For the next month,
Erin will
have to go back to Houston on Tuesdays and Fridays so they can monitor
her
health and blood counts.That
is,
she always knew until she was blown away by Erin's results. He played pretty well considering he missed
two
days of school this week with the crud. This morning Davis had rehearsal for tomorrow's sunrise service, and
Erin
is currently coloring eggs at Nico's house. Our plan for next week is to leave
Bryan around
1:00 on Monday for a 3:00 clinic appointment where they will check Erin
out,
place an IV, and get ready for treatment to start on Tuesday. She will take
the
lenalidomide early in the day, and the nurses will draw blood from her
IV periodically during the day to study how her body is metabolizing
it.We are all shaken, but full
of
resolve.Recurrent neuroblastoma is treated
differently
then it is when first diagnosed. The goal becomes controlling or chipping away at the disease, rather
than
eradicating it.Erin will take three
lenalidomide
capsules each morning for 21 days and then have 7 days off. After
a
month, we will scan again and see if the drug has had a positive
effect. If not, we will try something else.We don't expect Erin to
suffer many
side effects with this treatment and all indications are that she will
be
able to enjoy all of her usual activities.During
this round we will have to drive to Houston a couple of times a week
for blood
draws, but they will be quick in and out trips (hopefully). Our other big news is that Davis was
accepted
in the National Honor Society yesterday.Although
Erin had a strict restriction on activities
last
night, she woke up ginning this morning. We took Rosie down to be checked out at
several
wellness stations and collected goodies and trinkets at each booth.Erin had her
photo taken several times. We returned to the room for lunch, finished
listening
to The Secret Garden, watched a video about baby animal predators, and
took
a little rest.Thanks especially
to
the second graders in Mrs.Honea's class who each sent a message AND
their
favorite riddle.I'm not
going to spend any more time on this update,
as
I want to get packed (we don't travel light).Of course, I will
post
when I know something.Surgery started a couple of hours
late
(about
3:45) and went on a bit longer than scheduled, but Erin did well and we
are
now tucked into bed in room 1104.Erin's
skin for a look around. The samples were inconclusive by just looking
at
them. The pathologist will know more, presumably in the next few
days.The soccer party
Saturday
was memorable, to say the least. Then, the memorable part
happened. As we finished up our hamburgers and hot dogs, a storm blew through
with heavy
rain, high winds, and alot of hail.We all stood there under the
carport
watching our cars take a beating and trying to keep the children from
running
out to grab chunks of ice.For those of you checking for results
of the
biopsy, the surgery won't begin until 2:00.She needed to turn in
the
paperwork for an art contest she is entering, take an AR test, and see
all
her friends.In
the meantime
we are going to make the best of the free weekend. They are
celebrating
a really improved effort!Lest
you think
that Erin is suffering from any of this, don't worry too much. She
feels very well, as evidenced by her enthusiastic attendance at two
birthday
parties last weekend (swimming and skating) as well as the Lippinzaner
Stallion
show on Saturday night. She had gain a couple of pounds and
almost
an inch since December and her blood counts were quite strong.
