Subscribe to the site feed.It's been a fantastic 13 months since we brought the Isotope's Creative Catalyst Matt Silady on board to help us play tour guide to the world of comics for all of you.It just makes you proud, doesn't it?Of course, Matt will still be around working side by side with us here and there, and during some of the Isotope's special events, but we'll all miss celebrating new comics with him each Wednesday.IsotopeWednesday, December 24th 200811am until way, way, way past your bedtime!This Week the Isotope Staff Is Reading...I'm thrilled to have a new issue of Larry Marder's Beanworld on the shelves!So this week we're celebrating the series return with the Isotope's tribute to Beanworld's Boom'r Band.Proprietoryes, even more Beanworld love!This Week the Isotope Staff Is Reading...Blondie's Parallel Lines which is still unopened to this day!Sure, I can't actually read these things, but who cares?Creator Atsushi Kaneko is one of my favorite funnybook artists anywhere, although his comics do tend to be somewhat obscure on both this and the other side of the globe.BEST early xmas present ever!Could Isotope Possibly Adore You More?Lil' Holiday Present for Me, tooHey, happy holidays all!Thank you all so much for sharing such an amazing year with us here at the Isotope!Isotope community, and also have to raise my cocktail glass in honor of all the reoccurring Isotope lovelies who have made the last 7 and a half years the best years of my life.So forgive my sappy gushing, and allow me to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for gifting your friends here at the Isotope a true "joyeux noel" that I will always give thanks for.There is one thing that's been getting me down all year long though...And that's the Isotope's home on the web.November, but to be frank, I was reaching just out of my range of HTML ability and I turned to some wrong folks for assistance getting it built.Because both you and I know that it shouldn't really take a year (or even six months) to build a new website, should it?It's not like the damn thing was supposed to go to clean your house in the morning or make famous people think you're cool for the boots you wear or even give you some sexy Martin Emond makeover every time you looked at it.And I think I'm potentially working with some really great people on it.But it's the holidays and they are busy with their own lives right now.And good lord am I just sick of waiting around for something to happen.But at least we have something that works!Yes, I agree, I hate this version of the Isotope website too.You know what the Isotope thinks you need?Halloween in April with the best band in the entire Bay Area!This Week The Isotope Staff Is Reading...UpI want to express my thanks to the wonderful crowds of cool people who came out to the event.Honestly, this year has been amazing so far...Let's say an atom is missing a neutron or has an extra neutron.That type of atom is called an isotope.The same goes for isotopes.They are still the same element.They are just a little different from every other atom of the same element.Those odd ones may have 7 or even 8 neutrons.If you have looked at a periodic table you may have noticed that the atomic mass of an element is rarely an even number.That happens because of the isotopes.Atomic masses are calculated by figuring out how many atoms of each type are out there in the universe.The mass for element is actually 12.Since you never really know which C atom you are using in calculations, you should use the mass of an average C atom.That decay happens regularly like a clock.For carbon, the decay happens in a couple of thousand years.An isotope is a variant on a basic element, a substance made of atoms with a different number of neutrons than is typical.Typically, the number of protons and neutrons is the same.In an isotope, this balance is frequently broken.For example, 238U, the most common state of uranium, has three more neutrons than 235U, the form used in nuclear weapons.Protons in the nucleus are positively charged, meaning they repel each other.The presence of neutrons is necessary to separate these protons slightly, making the configuration stable.When the configuration is unstable, nuclear decay can result, turning the atoms into showers of radioactive particles.Besides the occasional tendency to be radioactive, an isotope tends to behave similarly to the natural element it is a variant on.Isotopes can participate in all the same reactions and have approximately the same mass, except in rare cases.The most famous isotope is 235U, because of its use in nuclear energy and weaponry.An isotope that is only slightly radioactive can be used as an atomic marker in medical applications, for example to track the spread of a drug in the body.Frederick Soddy received Nobel Prize in 1921, for his contributions and work with isotopes.Post your questions or comments about this article!Exploring the Table of Isotopes
