Israel Vibrations biography, Israel Vibrations discography
Israel
Vibration members Cecil Spence (Skelly) and Lascelle Bulgin (Wiss) were born in
Jamaica, West Indies. Each is a victim of Poliomyelitis (Polio). They learned early on the necessity for developing survival skills, and
although polio is an undeniably crippling and debilitating disease, the youths
never let their physically challenging situation supercede their willpower and
their creative abilities.Their
spirituality and stance on issues relating to their residency at the Mona
Rehabilitation Center caused them to be expelled from that institution. They began recording in 1976, enjoying a hit with
the poignant Same Song, which was licensed to EMI and brought the group
international attention.Free To Move reached their height of success upon
reaching number one on the CMJ New World charts.Their album Jericho,
released May 16, 2000, is undeniably their strongest work in years and features the
best musicians and harmonizers Jamaica has to offer. You did not enter a search term. After an equally bright start, Spence's life also took a severe downturn. They spent the next six years singing for their suppers and by 1975, Israel Vibration was a vocal force to be reckoned with."Bad Intention," never saw release. The following year, an answer to their prayers arrived when members of the Rastafarian religious group the Twelve Tribes of Israel agreed to finance a single by the trio.By the time they were done, the group had another hit song and a debut album of stunning proportions, which was titled after the single. On the strength of these, the trio was signed to the British EMI subsidiary Harvest, who released Same Song in Britain.Unconquering People album, and another popular single, "Crisis."The trio's deeply devotional songs, cultural themes, inspirational lyrics, and original take on the roots style had struck a chord with reggae fans around the world. Thus, it was a surprising decision that Israel Vibration recorded their next album, 1981's Why You So Craven, with legendary dancehall producer Junjo Lawes.Even an avid response at 1982's Reggae Sunsplash could not convince the trio that their future lay in a Jamaica where dancehall now reigned supreme (Live at Reggae Sunsplash, a split album from Israel Vibrations and the Gladiators, bears witness to their performance). Thus they relocated to New York City, perhaps believing that the large immigrant community could sustain them, or that America was now ready to embrace roots. All three attempted solo careers, but only Bulgin made it on to record; his Mr.The trio now settled down for the long haul, and although their sound was no longer on the scene's cutting edge, they continued putting out strong sets.Besides showcasing the trio's unique vocal styling, the album captures the Roots Radics at their fiercest.IV, and its dub companion IV Dub, gave heart to all those who believed that roots was fast becoming little more than a world lovefest. The album's militancy, notably on "Naw Give Up the Fight," proved the trio's own passionate cultural concerns and dread roots were not fading. Then, in 1996, the group released their first single in years, the infectious "Feeling Irie," taken from their new album, Free to Move. This attempt to push the band's profile higher into the mainstream came to naught, the trio had already built up a loyal fan base and remained a successful live act, as 1997's Live Again proved.Craig was no onger happy with their current path.Continuing on as a duo, Spence and Bulgin reappeared in 1999 with a new studio album, Pay the Piper, and proved that Israel Vibrations would not be defeated by this defection.Dub Combo appeared in summer 2001.Acknowledging Craig's longtime contribution to the group, the set is evenly divided between the trio, with each disc devoted to one individual member's greatest compositions.Israel Vibrations's career shows no signs of slowing, and the group has firmly carved a secure niche out of what once seemed an impenetrable surface. Please refresh the page to fix the problem.Of the trio, Bulgin appeared least likely to emerge a singing sensation.Although physically disabled, he was a gifted athlete and in his teens he was selected for the Jamaican Wheelchair Basketball team. But his conversion to Rastafarianism put an end to all that in 1969; he was dropped from the team and returned to Kingston. It was serendipity that he bumped into Craig soon after, and fate intervened again, to bring the pair back into touch with Bulgin. On the strength of these, the trio was signed to the British EMI subsidiary Harvest, who released Same Song in Britain. Why You So Craven, with legendary dancehall producer Junjo Lawes. In many ways, it was a failed venture and the trio was so dissatisfied, they walked out before the sessions were complete.Reggae Sunsplash could not convince the trio that their future lay in a Jamaica where dancehall now reigned supreme (Live at Reggae Sunsplash, a split album from Israel Vibrations and the Gladiators, bears witness to their performance). Thus they relocated to New York City, perhaps believing that the large immigrant community could sustain them, or that America was now ready to embrace roots. They were wrong on both counts. All three attempted solo careers, but only Bulgin made it on to record; his Mr.Sunshine album paired him with the Freedom Fighters Band.Although labelhead Doctor Dread had shown no interest in their solo efforts, he was enthusiastic about a reunion and quickly signed them to RAS.Roots Radics at their fiercest. The equally powerful On the Rock followed two years later and was also accompanied by a dub set.Craig was no onger happy with their current path. His debut album, Another Moses, featured his own backing band, the Zionists.Continuing on as a duo, Spence and Bulgin reappeared in 1999 with a new studio album, Pay the Piper, and proved that Israel Vibrations would not be defeated by this defection.Their popularity seems assured, and they remain a vibrant live act and an always intriguing studio group.Bulgin overcame adversity, illness, and...Bulgin overcame adversity, illness, and...AEC One Stop Group, Inc.Those familiar with the band feel the warmth of recognition and
appreciation when the name comes up in a discussion of reggae music. Then I will try to describe what Israel Vibrations music means to me, both live
and recorded. This was a terrible time in Jamaica due to the horrific Polio epidemic
that swept though the cities and rural towns.Polio claimed the lives of thousands
of people and crippled many others.Craig was the youngest son in a family of ten children.Apples life was his mother.Poliovirus were banished from their homes and placed in centers often
filled with other infected children.Mona Rehabilitation Center in Kingston. At the age of ten Apple
taught himself how to play the piano and soon after wrote his first song. The three men have all had their own problems
and struggles to overcome them.Polio, and why people have treated them differently their entire
lives.Being cursed at and called a cripple has hurt each band member beyond
the physical pain of the disease. All three men have taken this pain and transformed
it into a spiritual and emotional charisma emanating from each of their souls.Apple: Riverfront Times Interview 1996).Memories of past injustices should not divert us from the more pressing business
at hand.Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of Kings)
The three men began what would become a lifelong dedication to Rastafarianism. They each grew their hair into the traditional natty dread locks in accordance
with their Rastafarian beliefs. The three took to life in the
bush and did every thing they could to survive.People would pass through the bush and hear us singing and form a little
audience.Theological College located right
next to the Mona Rehabilitation center. We three are leaders, but Jah is the highest leader. In 1975, soon after word of the gig got out, the group was taken under the
wing of Hugh Booth from the Twelve Tribes of Israel.Israel Vibration because they felt that
Jah had given them Polio as a form of punishment for a previous sin.The song was a success and gained much support from reggae superstars including
Dennis Brown and Bob Marley among others reggae stars. The Same Song was released in 1976 and was a huge success.Apple, Skelly, and Wiss to compose a dub companion
album named Israel Tafari.Israel Vibrations from becoming an
international success.Israel Vibrations would record for Tommy Cowan and his label. They were one of the first reggae artists to record
at Tuff Gong studios preceding the Melody Makers and Nadine Sutherland.Taxman, Survive, Top Control, We A Da Rasta, Unconquered
People, Possibility, Dwellers of Darkness, and Practice What Jah Teach. They recall that Bob really enjoyed watching them perform.Israel Vibration changed management
once again, this time to producer Junjo Lawes.Skelly also forwarded his solo career with a 45 release. His influence spans far beyond reggae music and could never be given
proper justice in a paragraph of thought by a student in speech 214 class.Since coming to the States in 1981, Israel Vibrations had yet to tour or record
and album together as a complete band.Skelly, and Wiss got back together and Israel Vibration was reborn.Apple, Skelly, and Wiss knew they had to unite
once again to make beautiful music.Apple, Skelly, and Wiss all flew down to Washington
D.Israel Vibration continued their success in America with the help of Ras Records
and friend Dr.Holt on bass guitar and Dwight Pinkney on lead guitar. They are one of
the best backing bands still playing reggae music today.North American tour in 1999.Apple had left Israel Vibration to further his solo career.Roots Radics taking the stage for a solo performance. One of his locks was over 3 feet long and must have weighed at least 2
pounds. They wrapped around his back and spiraled all the way to his waist. The two men on stage where surely a sight to behold. They took turns singing
different songs while the Radics provided the rhythms. Both Skelly and Wiss
played the part of lead singer, sharing harmonies while the other sang. The performance was both powerful and emotional.Israel Vibrations is one of the most captivating live shows that you can see
today. Both Skelly and Wiss really knew how to get the crowd involved in the
show. The songs truly unite people together and display the power of music to
bring inner beauty out of its listeners and players alike.Watching the band perform on
crutches really touched my heart. It was out of their pain and sorrow that they brought
wonderful joy to an audience.Bob Marley album and everyone will be on the same plane. After seeing Israel Vibrations perform, I understood the true power of Rastafari.Israel Vibrations gets a huge sense of pride and accomplishment in passing the
message of Rastafari on to the masses.Reggae Bloodlines: pg 72) Today that view of Rastas is far from the truth. They make up some of Jamaica most prolific singers, artists, woodcarver, and
musicians. They are very political and active in community development.Today, prejudice and racism still exist while equal
rights do not.We are far from having a black male in the world be treated equal
to a white male. Many of Israel Vibrations songs portray images of the Rasta
culture and how blacks are foreseen in the world. The album is a compellation of live recordings from their
1997 North American tour. This song is an instrumental number performed by the Roots Radics. The drumbeat is a typical
reggae drum beat with the snare drum rim hit on the third count.Vibrations, are you feeling irie?Bobo shandy dread, respect to the orthodox and respect
to the children of Israel. We all gonna sing da same song.We all gonna jam da same jam. Here an important message of unity is prevailed to the Rastas in
Jamaica. No matter what you are, we all must join together to fight for the
common good of the group. The slave owners often force
the slaves to perform songs and dances for their own amusement.Jailhouse rock is a song that paints a picture of the Jamaican prison system
to the audience.Jamaica has had its share of political unrest and many jail sentences
are an effect of political disputes.National Party and the opposition Jamaica Labor Party. Many reggae stars have served time in jail because of their liberal
use of marijuana. It has been a long time. Here Israel Vibrations expresses their sorrow and understanding for those who
have been unfairly imprisoned for partaking in Rastafarian culture.Got to survive, Got to stay alive in
the Babylon.Rasta called these contrymen
rude boys.He is the only decider of what is good and bad.So long for people reaching out to you, you never seem to really
care.So many poor homeless and hungry.Jah come in the morning. When he wakes up, he has no breakfast on his table. When he comes home he has
no supper on his table. The white man has these things in our society.Great leaders among men such as Dr.Martin Luther King and Marcus
Garvey have fought for the equal rights for the black race. The raw human emotion that lies inside of these
three men is a spiritually moving sight.Reggae Bloodline: In Search of the Music and Culture of Jamaica.Israel Vibration: Modern Roots With A Message.Cecil "Skeleton" Spence, Albert "Apple Gabriel" Craig, and Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin overcame adversity, illness, and poverty to become one of the finest roots groups in Jamaica's history. All three had been afflicted by polio and first became acquainted, albeit briefly, at Kingston's Mona Rehabilitation Clinic.Of the trio, Bulgin appeared least likely to emerge a singing sensation. He spent much of his childhood at a variety of rehabilitation centers and in his teens began working for a tailor.Craig, in contrast, initially did seem destined for a musical career and for a while attended the famed Alpha Cottage School. Many of the island's greatest stars passed through its doors, including members of the Skatalites and drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace. After an equally bright start, Spence's life also took a severe downturn. But his conversion to Rastafarianism put an end to all that in 1969; he was dropped from the team and returned to Kingston. It was serendipity that he bumped into Craig soon after, and fate intervened again, to bring the pair back into touch with Bulgin. The three teens had individually all previously converted to rastafarianism, now their shared faith and childhood experiences helped forge a strong friendship. They spent the next six years singing for their suppers and by 1975, Israel Vibration was a vocal force to be reckoned with. The following year, an answer to their prayers arrived when members of the Rastafarian religious group the Twelve Tribes of Israel agreed to finance a single by the trio.Bob Marley and Dennis Brown."The Same Song," with producer Tommy Cowan.By the time they were done, the group had another hit song and a debut album of stunning proportions, which was titled after the single. On the strength of these, the trio was signed to the British EMI subsidiary Harvest, who released Same Song in Britain.Unconquering People album, and another popular single, "Crisis."And even if this set was not quite as dread as its predecessor, tracks like "Mr.Not surprisingly, Israel Vibration went down a storm at that year's Reggae Sunsplash. The trio's deeply devotional songs, cultural themes, inspirational lyrics, and original take on the roots style had struck a chord with reggae fans around the world. They were wrong on both counts. The trio now settled down for the long haul, and although their sound was no longer on the scene's cutting edge, they continued putting out strong sets.Praises, its dub companion Dub Vibration, and Israel Dub, drawn from the Strength of My Life set.Besides showcasing the trio's unique vocal styling, the album captures the Roots Radics at their fiercest.IV, and its dub companion IV Dub, gave heart to all those who believed that roots was fast becoming little more than a world lovefest. The album's militancy, notably on "Naw Give Up the Fight," proved the trio's own passionate cultural concerns and dread roots were not fading. The equally powerful On the Rock followed two years later and was also accompanied by a dub set. Then, in 1996, the group released their first single in years, the infectious "Feeling Irie," taken from their new album, Free to Move. This attempt to push the band's profile higher into the mainstream came to naught, the trio had already built up a loyal fan base and remained a successful live act, as 1997's Live Again proved.Craig was no onger happy with their current path.In 1997, he left the trio to again pursue a solo career. His debut album, Another Moses, featured his own backing band, the Zionists.Continuing on as a duo, Spence and Bulgin reappeared in 1999 with a new studio album, Pay the Piper, and proved that Israel Vibrations would not be defeated by this defection.Israel Vibrations's career shows no signs of slowing, and the group has firmly carved a secure niche out of what once seemed an impenetrable surface.Unconquered People

this beleagured country of seven million to the other.Gallic nose give Guil the air of a character actor in the Comedie Francaise.Instead, as we exited the jet's door, we encountered a handsome dreadlocked Israeli man, who called us by name, identifying himself as a friend of Guil's."Yeah mon, I'm an air traffic controller, and I landed your plane just now."The ambassadorial staff of the Embassy of Ghana was in attendance, as well as major media and music stars, and more than a few dreadlocks. It was with a very attractive young Texas woman named Heather Marley, granddaughter of Noel green designs and hung with large posters of Marley and Lee 'Scratch' Perry and the Mad Professor.Next show was about 45 minutes to the west, in one of the poorest towns in the country called Sederot, home to many of Israel's Ethiopian newcomers. It is also a highly dangerous place that has been under siege from the adjacent Gaza Strip for more than four years.Noam, the manager, said he understood, but that we shouldn't worry too much "because our theater is also the bomb shelter, with concrete walls that are a meter thick, and a steel roof."The full house that night, spiced with Ethiopians who didn't comprehend a thing I said between the Marley video clips (which they clapped for rapturously), made us glad we didn't cancel. Our next destination was deep into the southern part of the country, where the Negev spills into the Arava Desert down to the northern tip of the Red Sea at the very bottom of Israel. From the southernmost point in Israel, we began a long drive straight north through the Jordan Valley, with the imposing peaks of that country flowing for hundreds of miles on our right, their muted colors changing dramatically as the sun struck them in its steady descent into returned to the highway, passing the historic fortification of Massada, the remains of Sodom, then forward on to the reported site of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River, and up into the lovely mountain town of Tiberias, above the Sea of Galilee. It reminded me strongly of Mill Valley and Mount Tamalpais, just north of San Francisco, with the same verdant hillsides and foliage, and
