Italian, soaring up from gorgeous low tones to sweeping high notes. But she does all this without sacrificing any of her own engaging skills.Jackie Ryan is the Rita Hayworth of jazz, her natural sensuousness and bold inhibition as fiery as her luminous red locks. The results are consistently wonderful.THIS HEART OF MINE SHOULD SIT HIGH ON THIS YEAR'S TOP TEN LIST.Listen to Jackie Ryan's voice and consider this: how important is it to you that vocal jazz come from the heart?Ryan's latest release proves that nothing works better on your soul than the real thing.Jackie's sultry voice, sensitive articulation, and impeccable intonation are absolutely sublime.Jackie is the real thing, an artist to delight in today and to follow in the future...If we ever stop playing This Heart Of Mine our listeners will come picket the station!Matthias Kirsch
Head of Music for JazzRadio 101.Winner of Best Jazz Format for the third time in a row at the NY International Radio Programming Awards.Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jackie Ryan. Then by chance I tuned in for the first phrase of Make It Last, the lyrics of which are nothing special in and of themself, "Hold me close while we kiss".I've since devoured this album many times, always marvelling at how she bends notes, how she takes a song like East Of The Sun and makes it like no other version I've ever heard. There are a lot of people out there singing jazz or jazz influenced music but there aren't that many real jazz singers.Jackie Ryan is certainly part of that very small latter group.JACKIE RYAN "This Heart of Mine."It shows an incredibly versatile vocalist and gifted lyricist in a class all her own.Jackie's rich, appealing alto voice has brought her increasing international acclaim.Clark Terry (with whom she performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival).Ryan has got the right record at the right time.JazzArtCollection Announce Fine Art Edition of Historic Jazz Poster Series...It is an exceptional vocal album and certainly one of the best in the past few years.Jackie Ryan Thank you so much, Roger. It was the most enjoyable project I have ever done.Where did the love of jazz begin?Yes, my parents were both singers, but they were more from a classical background. My mother sang in operettas in Mexico and my dad sang at concerts. And they both came from a long line of singers also.So there was always singing per se, but not jazz.AAJ: When did you start singing?"My mom had passed away when I was 15 and my Dad worked 11 hours a day.But in hindsight it was a blessing. When you can't talk what do you do?Then I took a music class at college.Jazz is a minority art and jazz singing is a stepchild to that minority art.And then it could not be from the heart. It drives you, pushes you and eats at you every day. There may have been safer roads. But, they would not have been easier.AAJ: Your sense of phrasing, your handling of a song's text is often stunning.Does this come natural to you or do you decide to focus on lyrics?Singing is as much about HOW you sing that lyric as it is about the lyric itself.Singing is a form of communication and speech.Your personality shows in your speech and humor, right? How you "phrase" the lyric can give it your own special meaning. And to be playful is what makes it art. What attracts you to a song? How do you select them and your CD "themes?"And so it is also with some Brazilian music.Of course the lyric has to touch me.And I hate bad, or lazy, lyric writing. You do find that in some jazz tunes where someone has taken a hip tune and put lyrics to it.Also, a lyric needs to touch me in some way.It needs to be clever, it needs to be thought out well and most of all it needs to be honest.AAJ: Many of the best singers began singing with bands. The singers in the 30's and 40's ALL started that way. That isn't the case anymore. But that was a different era.Completely different from working with a small band.Much more of a discipline, of course.Instrumental: Bill Evans, Bird, Miles, Duke, Louis, Clark Terry, Terry Gibbs, Pres, Joe Henderson, Barry Harris, Egberto Gismonti, Toots Thielemans, Jim Hall, Coltrane, too many to list.Classical such as Stravinsky and Copeland, lots of Brazilian music such as Milton Nasciemento, Dori Caymmi, Jobim, Djavan, Ivan, Nana Caymmi, Leni Andrage.Opera singers, Cuban music, African music such as Salif Keita, Yousou N'Dour, Black Mombazo.Lots of Ethnic and cross cultural CDs like The Soul of Black Peru, some Fado, obviously too much to list!Do you have a favorite composer (or a favorite five)?Of course the obvious we all know: Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Harry Warren, Harold Arlen and Count Basie.Their music will live on forever. But there are so many categories. To me he is as brilliant as Stravinsky! Also, I love so many Brazilian composers. So his music had the best of three worlds in it to me.He gave us so much, didn't he.And I love many of the new Brazilian composers as well.Ivan Lins' material still knocks me out.And they are wonderful to sing. What are you most happy with in respect to your own singing? When I sing to myself it feels so good. And for an audience I just love to take them on the journey with me.AAJ: Will you be appearing live in any concerts or tour gigs soon?Yes, several in San Francisco as I write this.Hawaii in a couple of weeks to do some fun gigs and radio shows with friends out there. Then a few more big ones in Northern SF and then down to LA to do some. The head of Jazz Radio there has written and is trying to set something up.Also, I am working with wonderful musicians everywhere I go so it never gets boring.Always stays a challenge and the musicians are always inspiring to me.She is 15 and was of course influenced by the music that is popular to her generation. But I have sent her some great music to listen to.Yes, a lot has to do with listening.Become friends with your voice. But I am always thinking of new ideas. It will be different from what you have heard so far.AAJ: With whom would you like to be stranded on a desert island?Sean Connery's face, farmhouses by the sea, a cozy fire,a ballad by Ben Webster, etc?And tiny finches hop around my backyard. Also, all of my friends and my siblings have a great sense of humor and keep me laughing. So many art forms to explore. And be at home with that one.JR: Thanks Roger for your wonderful reviews!Thank you for supporting jazz! And sang Schubert, Brahms and Tchaikowski, and my mom sang in operettas in Mexico in her youth.Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Mavis Staples. His whole basement was stocked full of records. We used to listen for hours on end.Jackie Ryan: All art inspires me.It inspires me just to think of it.It is incredibly moving to view such beauty.Whenever I go to Paris, I try to get back there because it moves me so, to tears. There have been some doozies, but some were funny actually. One time when I was a teenager, I came out to bow and did a dramatic curtsey just in fun. And, it was a huge place, so the shoe disappeared.Jackie Ryan: I listen to everything from Miles to Benny Carter to Red Garland to Brazilian to African to Capo Verdean to Fado to Tango.Do you have any pre or post show rituals that you must do?Jackie Ryan: No, no real rituals. In general, I have learned that being healthy and centered is what it is all about for me.It may be truer for singing than for playing an instrument because it is inside of your body, literally, that the sound is produced. They will pick up on how I feel.JazzReview: Are there any classics from the Great American Songbook, for instance, that you feel are so associated with a particular singer, you would never perform?Does the size of an ensemble change what you would sing and how you would approach singing it?Different instruments bring different palettes of color to use and play off of also. One of the great aspects of jazz is that it is ever in flux. But to define jazz, and say it is just this one style, it is limiting. For myself, I am always reticent to use labels.Any art form has to be about expansion. To me, that is the nature of art.You have to ignore that stuff and just go with whatever rings your bell! Now every major city in Europe has its own hometown heroes. While not a bad thing, has this changed the dynamics for an American musician doing a (club) tour of Europe in regards to availability or pay?Jackie Ryan: Europe has changed a lot since those days.In Europe, they sponsor young musicians.Holland subsidizes their musicians so that they can come play here.In many countries they also make sure that children learn the classics at an early age.It is as important as any other subject in school. We are learning from each other now I think. So as I say, we have things to teach each other still.Jackie Ryan: I agree with you.Maybe I would have taught. There are many social causes I care about and contribute to: the environment, humane treatment of animals, hunger. If you could go back and tell the artist you were in the beginning one piece of advice about their career, what would it be?You live your life the best you can and work with the tools you were given. Some people were given a lot early on, but perhaps you were given a more difficult set of circumstances. They did the best they could for us.You work with what you have.Although my road was a little tough at times, I always had a lot of love. You just have to see that finally. There are many ideas I have.Tamir did about nine out of fourteen of the arrangements and they are pretty fantastic. Then there is a CD coming out early next year with Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Alexander, Jeremy Pelt, Romero Lubambo Ray Drummond and Carl Allen. It has a lot more blues and a bit of Brazilian.Since you asked where people can get more information, I have a website.Jackie Ryan: Well, you just saw me singing with Eric Alexander. He is disciplined, professional and so fluent in his musical expression, and he has his own sound. She and her husband, the wonderful flautist Bart Platteau, astound me.They are both very serious musicians. The musicians she has in her band are all top notch.Ernie Hammes, is the best I have ever heard anywhere. It is about loving yourself, as well.Standing in front of an audience used to be a major challenge and yet I had to do it.Now I love singing in front of an audience. It is about sharing your art and touching people. We as artists are just a vessel and we have to remain open in order to let the energy, that Godly energy, flow through us to others.Artists, I believe, were given the responsibility to be messengers for that power. It can heal, but if what we are thinking is our ego, then we have blocked it.It was so great to meet you!Keep up the good work spreading the word!Send this page to a
