Nicknamed the "Bronx Bull" because of his aggressive, charging style, La Motta learned to box while serving time in the Coxsackie Correctional Institute as a teenager.On June 16, 1949, La Motta won the world middleweight championship when Marcel Cerdan of France couldn't come out for the 10th round.Cerdan was killed in an October plane crash en route to begin training in the United States.La Motta defended his title twice but lost it when Robinson knocked him out in the 13th round on February 14, 1951.Although badly battered, La Motta avoided being knocked down by hanging onto the ropes while he was counted out.Knocked out in two of his next seven fights, La Motta didn't box in 1953, but came back for three fights in 1954 before retiring.La Motta won 83 fights, 30 by knockout, and lost 19, 4 by knockout.LaMotta was a clever boxer who executed the nuances of the game with fine precision.While he was able to absorb punches with little problem, he was also adept at rolling with punches to minimize the damage.He liked to play possum in the ring, lulling opponents into a false sense of confidence before unleashing his own attack.And, perhaps above all, he had a tremendous will to win.Sugar Ray Robinson largely defines LaMotta's career.The two were scheduled to meet in a rematch but the plane carrying Cerdan back to the United States crashed and Cerdan died.In 1950, LaMotta successfully defended the crown against Tiberio Mitri and Laurent Dauthuille.Dauthuille to retain his belt.Finally, in the 13th round, the referee stopped the contest.LaMotta fought through 1952, was inactive in 1953 and retired after three fights in 1954.
