On the blogs: lab waste, hospital competition
On Nature Network Boston, Anna Kushnir lets us in on a dirty little secret: Labs are an environmentalist's nightmare.McDonough lists financial data for Beth Israel Deaconess and two Partners hospitals, Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's.BIDMC is doing too shabbily itself. That said, McDonough asks how to measure quality in hopes of moving the converstation forward."There are literally hundreds and hundreds of quality indicators, and each provider would like to get paid for those things it does well, and not get penalized for the things it does poorly," he says."Who should decide which indicators matter, and which do not?"Reduced chemistry lab waste by almost 35 percent.Of those experiments, 90 percent produced hazardous waste.Straws, forceps and a Beral pipette serve as a buret. These washes are followed by a pure solvent.Assess What Waste is Generated
Review current laboratory experiments to determine the amount of reagents used, and the amount and type of waste produced.Have the environmental services staff from facilities management determine if the waste from each experiment is considered hazardous by law.Twenty four experiments produced waste that was not hazardous but could be reduced.See if the current experiments can be modified to produce less waste by changing a procedure or substituting another reagent.Changing experiments can be time consuming. Many excellent sources for alternative experiments are available (see Additional Resources below).Assess the waste that will be generated from all the new experiments you are considering.New experiments need to be tested for clarity.MnTAP's Intern Program, call 612.Site maintained by S Haas .What are Waste Minimization and Pollution Prevention?Laboratory chemical waste management for waste reduction (2nd ed.Hygiene Plan for High Schools.Raleigh: North Carolina Pollution Prevention Pays
