M R I biography, M R I discography

On July 3, 1977, an event took place that would forever alter the landscape of modern medicine. This event was the first MRI exam ever performed on a human being.Raymond Damadian, a physician and scientist, along with colleagues Dr.As late as 1982, there were but a handful of MRI scanners in the entire United States. We can image in seconds what used to take hours.MRI is a very complicated technology not well understood by many.In this article, you'll learn all about how a huge, noisy MRI machine actually works. What is happening to your body while you are in the machine? What can we see with an MRI and why do you have to hold so still during your exam? These questions and many more are answered here, so let's get started!Share This Article: (what's this?Article Page Tools : DELICIOUS Body? What are some common uses of the procedure? How should I prepare for the procedure?Unless you are told otherwise, you may follow your regular daily routine and take medications as usual. Some MRI examinations may require the patient to swallow contrast material or receive an injection of contrast into the bloodstream. Some conditions, such as kidney disease and sickle cell anemia, may prevent you from having an MRI with contrast material.Women should always inform their physician or technologist if there is any possibility that they are pregnant.Because the risks of an MRI exam to the baby are unknown, pregnant women should not have this exam unless the potential benefit from the MRI is assumed to outweigh the potential risks.Because they can interfere with the magnetic field of the MRI unit, metal and electronic objects are not allowed in the exam room. However, a recently placed artificial joint may require the use of another imaging procedure.Dyes used in tattoos may contain iron and could heat up during MRI, but this is rarely a problem.Tooth fillings and braces usually are not affected by the magnetic field but they may distort images of the facial area or brain, so the radiologist should be aware of them. What does the equipment look like? These units are especially helpful for examining patients who are fearful of being in a closed space and for those who are very obese.Certain types of exams cannot be performed using open MRI.For more information, consult your doctor. How does the procedure work?Instead, radio waves are directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, in a strong magnetic field. The magnetic field is produced by passing an electric current through wire coils in most MRI units.Other coils, located in the machine and in some cases, placed around the part of the body being imaged, send and receive radio waves. In the magnetic field, these protons change their position, producing signals that are detected by the coils.Because protons are most abundant in water molecules, MR images show differences in water content between various body tissues. How is the procedure performed?Straps and bolsters may be used to help you stay still and maintain the correct position during imaging. If a contrast material will be used in the MRI exam, a nurse or technologist will insert an intravenous (IV) line into a vein in your hand or arm.IV to prevent blockage of the IV line until the contrast material is injected. If a contrast material is used during the examination, it will be injected into the intravenous line (IV) after an initial series of scans.Additional series of images will be taken following the injection.MR spectroscopy, which provides additional information on the chemicals present in the body's cells, may also be performed during the MRI exam and will add approximately 15 minutes to the exam time. What will I experience during and after the procedure? Most MRI exams are painless. Therefore, sedation can be arranged for those patients who anticipate anxiety, but fewer than one in 20 require it.It is normal for the area of your body being imaged to feel slightly warm, but if it bothers you, notify the radiologist or technologist. You will know when images are being recorded because you will hear tapping or thumping sounds when the coils that create the magnetic field are turned on.Many MRI centers allow a friend or parent to stay in the room. There is also a very small chance of irritation or infection of your skin at the site of the IV tube insertion. It is recommended that nursing mothers not breastfeed for 36 to 48 hours after an MRI with a contrast material.Who interprets the results and how do I get them?MRI has proven valuable in diagnosing a broad range of conditions, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, and muscular and bone abnormalities.MRI can help physicians evaluate both the structure of an organ and how it is working.MRI enables the detection of abnormalities that might be obscured by bone with other imaging methods.MRI allows physicians to assess the biliary system noninvasively and without contrast injection. If sedation is used there are risks of excessive sedation. What are the limitations of MRI of the Body?If you are anxious, confused or in severe pain, you may find it difficult to lie still during imaging.Breathing may cause artifacts, or image distortions, during MRIs of the chest, abdomen and pelvis.MRI generally is not recommended for patients who have been acutely injured.CT) and the results may not be immediately available as is often necessary in trauma situations.Although there is no reason to believe that magnetic resonance imaging harms the fetus, the effects of a strong magnetic field are not well understood. For this reason pregnant women usually are advised not to have an MRI exam unless medically necessary. It cannot detect calcium present in a tumor.Detection of calcium (in tumors or other issues) is limited with MRI.MRI typically costs more and may take more time to perform than other imaging modalities.Note About Links: For the convenience of our users, RadiologyInfo provides links to relevant Web patient prepare for an MRI scan and how is it performed? How does a patient obtain the results of the MRI scan?An MRI (or magnetic resonance imaging) scan is a radiology technique that uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to produce images of body structures. The MRI scanner is a tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field that aligns the protons of hydrogen atoms, which are then exposed to a beam of radio waves. The receiver information is processed by a computer, and an image is produced. The image and resolution produced by MRI is quite detailed and can detect tiny changes of structures within the body. For some procedures, contrast agents, such as gadolinium, are used to increase the accuracy of the images. When are MRI scans used?It is also used when considering problems associated with the vertebrae or intervertebral discs of the spine.Often, surgery can be deferred or more accurately directed after knowing the results of an MRI scan.Learn about diverticulitis (diverticular disease, diverticulosis) information includes symptoms, diagnosis surgery, diet, and treatment.MedicineNet provides reliable doctor produced health and magnet is very, very strong, certain types of metal can cause significant errors, called artifacts, in the images. If you have a fear of confined spaces (claustrophobia), tell your doctor before the exam. You may be prescribed a mild sedative, or your doctor may recommend an "open" MRI, in which the machine is not as close to the body.Small devices, called coils, may be placed around the head, arm, or leg, or other areas to be studied. If you have any of the following metallic objects in your body, you should not get an MRI: Inner ear (cochlear) implants Brain aneurysm clips Certain artificial heart valves Older vascular stents Recently placed artificial joints You will be asked to sign a consent form that says you do not have any of these items in your body.Because of the strong magnets, certain metallic objects are not allowed into the room.Items such as jewelry, watches, credit cards, and hearing aids can be damaged.Removable dental work should be taken out just prior to the scan. This can be dangerous, so such items are not allowed into the scanner area.An MRI exam causes no pain. Some people may become anxious when inside the scanner.Ear plugs are usually given to help reduce the noise. After an MRI scan, you can resume your normal diet, activity, and medications.Combining MRIs with other imaging methods can often help the doctor make a more definitive diagnosis.MRI images taken after a special dye (contrast) is delivered into the body may provide additional information about the blood vessels. There is no ionizing radiation involved in MRI, and there have been no documented significant side effects of the magnetic fields and radio waves used on the human body to date. The most common type of contrast (dye) used is gadolinium. The person operating the machine will monitor your heart rate and breathing as needed.Grainger RC, Allison D, Adam, Dixon AK.Diagnostic Radiology: A Textbook of Medical Imaging.Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 22nd
