Medair was a mixture of time of joy, learning, and unforgetable experiences but unfortunately, it was mostly filled with frustration. After much deliberation, I came home after 4 months. It was a great decision and I don't regret going and I don't regret leaving.I'm feeling better than I have in my two months being here.My closest friend here and room mate has had quite a few weeks.Well, that night, I was woken up to the sounds of her having a seizure and gasping for breath. After 15 minutes of unconsciousness and then half an hour of being "out of it", she came back to us.Moira is flown out two days later and had some tests done in Kampala. One of the doctors she saw told her that she needed to get a husband because she can't sleep alone now.Moira has a seizure once again and was evacuated to Nairobi on her own jet with two pilots and a nurse.More test were done and everything looked normal. It was concluded that she became toxic on Larium and is now on drugs to stop any more seizures and we're all praying her that she can come back to us here in Abim.So now she has a few more days in Nairobi where she is being treated like a queen by the Medair team there and is shopping, eating amazing food and recovering from quite a scare.Well, I'm alone in my Tukul.Sigh, which isn't that great. The rains just don't want to come and it's soooooo hot, dry and dusty. The winds are vicious and being clean lasts about 5 minutes before the wind blows dust on your sweaty face!Security has been good and we're all praying for good roads so we can do our work.I've been practically living in my pharmacy trying to keep up with stock and organizing everything. This is where over 3 days, our team will see around 1800 children with skin infections, worms or wounds. It's absolute chaos, exhausting and hopfully, FUN!We had a wonderful Good Friday time of worship last night at the base and am looking forward to Easter Sunday.Lindsay, what are you doing out there? This includes 2 Clinical Officers (higher than Nurses but lower than Physicians), 2 Nurses, 2 Midwives and 2 Nursing Assistance.Capacity Building Team (CBT) were while the MMC run the clinics, the village Community Health Workers will go through a three week course where they either learn new skills or solidify what they already know.Sometimes I go out with the MMC to the villages. We all sleep together in a building that the Village has provided and we all sleep in Mosidomes.Basically, they are small tents without the rain cover.Sometimes we also get serenaded by bats or the rats will have races by our mosidomes.Moira and I half to death!Earplugs are a great invention!Yup, sometimes the job is tough!March) and was flown out 5 days later because there are no labs for testing and none of us knew what was going on.I'm right now praying that this medication will work, that I will regain my strength and will fly out next week to begin work again."Muno, how are you" or "Muno, Muno bye, bye" was heard.Jayne was started later and was behind me and said that I was like the Pied Piper. We divided into two groups and for 45 minutes we ran around, taught them how to throw and also ducked as the disks were flying everywhere! It was really fun and by the time we were finished I was grabbed, touched and stared at all because of my white skin.We got back, barely, as we were dragging children by our arms or running around to free ourselves. We arrived in Kampala on the 18th and I got to enjoy a normal church service with excellent Praise and Worship.Oh the joys of not knowing where your food comes from. There were beautiful homes, people had on nice dresses with no tears and the markets had a bounty of produce. It was almost strange to think that we were in the same country.Great food, beautiful rooms with showers and hot water.Elephants, Kobs, Bush Hogs (remember Pumba from The Lion King? This also provided a chance to empty the bladders but not too far away!We also went on a boat ride and saw many Hippos.Just lounging around and they are HUGE!But more about them later. This became a huge source of entertainment while points were given and taken away for various reasons. We soon discovered that it included sleeping next to the water where around 12 hippos were cooling off!We did what we could with bottled water and two towels and felt beautiful as we got ready for dinner. We had dinner with the other brave travellers and then a hippo got out of the water to munch on some grass.....Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures because we really didn't want to scare it....That meant we were all cozy in our three tents and it does get very cold so some were fine (those blanket hogs!We headed back the next morning and spent the rest of the days just packing for the journey, shopping for some supplies and getting ready for our next 8 weeks till our next break. If you can live past 5, you are blessed and have a chance to see 18.Standing at the health center and watching the exhausted and incredibly ill babies on their mother's laps brought tears to my eyes.Sure you can give mosquito nets, dump out standing water and cover up but in reality, people are still active a 6pm.....I'm just sharing what's on my heart right now.We arrived back from visiting some of the villages today. My mind is blown right now and what I've seen has make my heart ache and wonder if there will ever be an answer to the pain and agony that faces many in the world today.Survival of the fittest is real.I'm going to ponder all this and write about what I've seen and felt.March (2) A typical hostilities by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND, of all forms of hostilities against the Federal Government, oil companies and their workers for 24 hours in celebration of Christmas. However, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr.Magnus Abe, in a statement, said the imposition of the curfew was to restore law and order in the area, which it said the Joint Task Force (JTF) has been mandated to enforce. The state government has also extended the fight against cultism to royal fathers, who Amaechi has asked to join the fight against the menace, which impedes development and destroys peace in the state. He said during the quarterly meeting with traditional rulers that their support was crucial since and that if they check the menace from their various domains, there will be no hiding place for miscreants in the entire state.Recent comments on Nigeria: Rivers Imposes Curfew On Okrika.Security problem in a society like Nigeria should be looked upon on daily bases,If the Government of a country can not control his people then is people will control the Government.Impossing dusk to dawn curfew in okrika in a bid to have security is laughable. It is rather unfortunate that it is innocent people that are paying the ultimate price of torture, arrest, maiming and killing.Goverment should stop the pretence and come up clean in this regard. Some mischievous persons in Okrika have continued to fuel crisis in the area through the sponsorship of terrorism against my men.Armed violence seems to be returning to Okrika, one of the major Ijaw communities in Rivers State,Nigeria, with vengeance. And this, at least, on the face value, appears to be a matter of great concern to Mr.Asari, leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), are the central figures in the Rivers State.Ateke spoke against the backdrop of the renewed cycle of violence in some Okrika communities.Ama, Ogan, Dutch Island, Ibaka Communities, among other Okrika settlements, have been hit by a gale of violence. In all these communities, the warlord claimed that his men were the principal victims. But there seems to be a twist in the renewed orgy of violence in Okrika. One account tends to blame the Ateke group for the violence which erupted at Ibaka, and spilt to Ogbogbo, all in Okrika Local Government Area.Asari, following their Abuja peace deal.Okrika indigenes joing in celebrating the NDPVF boss as a hero.Bush Boys, and some Okrika chiefs, stormed Okrika, a faction of Okrika chiefs allegedly loyal to Ateke, a son of the soil, prepared a list of those who jubilated when the Kalabari war lord and his team entered Okrika.Rivers have been plotting to sabotage the peace efforts. This was sequel to a traditional oath administered by the Okrika Traditional Ruling Council to the major actors in the Okrika crisis.Since the peace accord, I gave an order to all my men to be very calm and not to engage in any act capable of threatening the existing peace in Okrika. At their meeting in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, November 10, which was presided over by Ateke himself, the militia group strongly condemned the renewed violence in Okrika, and parts of the capital city, claiming that they will not be provoked. They resolved that they will stand by the Peter Odili administration to ensure that lasting peace returns to Rivers State.Okrika to lay down their arms. For the peace workers in the state, the renewed violence in Okrika is quite disturbing. For over four years, the area was in turmoil, grief and wanton destruction. On Saturday, August 14, 2004, there were signs that all was well in Okrika. On that day representatives of the Ateke group and their rival Bush Boys subjected themselves to the traditional Okrika peace oath, Oboku fi.In Okrika, Oboku fi is believed to be the highest traditional form of reconciliation between warring factions.Traditionalists in Okrika believe that the consequences of breaching the oath are always very terrible.Among the Okrika people, it is generally believed that the oath has an extended effect on anybody who in any way whatever, is connected with or related to any of those who take it.The Okrika traditional establishment holds the view that Oboku fi is a solemn covenant, with specific stipulations of mutual responsibilities, that bind individuals, or communities that take it.The mystery of Oboku fi seems to lie in the obvious tragic boomerang whenever a breach is deliberate. Its potency does not appear to be subject to belief or disbelief.Email This Page's URL To Your
