Oysterband biography, Oysterband discography

Oysterband (originally The Oyster Band) is a British folk rock band formed in Canterbury in or around 1976.The name Oyster comes from the group's early association with the coastal town of Whitstable in East Kent, known for the quality of its oysters.The lineup of the band changed over these albums.Recent history After the 1987 release Wide Blue Yonder Kearey left the band to be replaced by Chopper (real name Ray Cooper).Subsequent albums included Ride, Little Rock to Leipzig and the June Tabor collaboration Freedom and Rain.Following this the band name changed to Oysterband.Drummer Lee Partis (who for several years was billed only by his forename) replaced Russell Lax for 1992's Deserters before Holy Bandits in 1993 propelled the band to the forefront of a booming folk rock scene alongside bands such as The Levellers.But recent releases Deep Dark Ocean, Here I Stand, Rise Above and Meet You There have seen the band return to a softer, more melodic sound while recent tours under the banner The Big Session have seen the band offer exposure to several young, emerging folk musicians like the Handsome Family and veteran musicians such as June Tabor.James O'Grady (Uilleann pipes, fiddle, flute, vocals) regularly appeared on the Oysters' albums and tours in the last few years.Oysterband will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2008.This page was last modified on 26 May 2008, at 14:21.This video will appear on your blog shortly.Thank you for sharing this video!This video has been added to your favorites.Please login to add to favorites.Please login to add to your playlists.This video has no Responses.Change this to see only comments above a certain value.Change the value of a comment by clicking on a thumb.April 2008 Oysterband comes to Canada!!Saw them in London in February not long before the album came out.But then, what else would you expect from the Oysterband?They're past masters at this.Would you like to comment?IFC NEWS: THE CHANGELI N..."YouTube recommends upgrading to a safer, modern browsersuch as Firefox.The group soon dropped the Ceilidh from its name and became Oyster Band and, in the 1990s, Oysterband.Ian Telfer (violin, concertina, vocal), John Jones (lead vocal, melodeon) and Alan Prosser (guitars, vocal) are Oysterband's core trio, joined by Chopper (bass, cello), who replaced Ian Kearey in 1987, and Lee Partis (drums), who replaced Russell Lax in 1992.The first phase of Oysterband's career culminated with Liberty Hall in 1985.Of the 11 tracks, six were original and showed that Telfer and John Jones had become a fine songwriting team, specializing in catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics.But by 1986 the lads felt they'd done all they could do with the trad format and it was time for changes.The traditional melody was intact but the spirit had definitely changed.In 1990 Oyster Band took a slight departure from its rockier path to collaborate with vocalist June Tabor on Freedom and Rain.This project gave a higher profile to Tabor and her Oysterband colleagues, and as a combined group they toured extensively and received press coverage from mainstream publications like Rolling Stone, which rarely gave significant attention to roots music.Unfortunately that higher profile was merely temporary (at least in the United States).On December 12, 2003, Oysterband organized a 25th anniversary concert that was held at the Forum, Kentish Town, London.Among the guest performers were June Tabor, an acoustic version of Chumbawamba and James o' Grady (uilllean pipes, violin, whistles, vocal); the concert can be seen on DVD.Oysterband followed that up with The Big Session, which featured a number of English, Irish and American musicians including Tabor, Eliza Carthy, Show of Hands, Steve Knightley, Jim Moray and the Handsome Family.The CD was a collection of performances where the guest artists chose the songs they wanted to do and Oysterband backed them up.The first one took place in June 2005 and plans are to have it be a yearly event.The group soon dropped the Ceilidh from its name and became Oyster Band and, in the 1990s, Oysterband.Ian Telfer (violin, concertina, vocal), John Jones (lead vocal, melodeon) and Alan Prosser (guitars, vocal) are Oysterband's core trio, joined by Chopper (bass, cello), who replaced Ian Kearey in 1987, and Lee Partis (drums), who replaced Russell Lax in 1992.It wasn't so different from the O.The first phase of Oysterband's career culminated with Liberty Hall in 1985.Of the 11 tracks, six were original and showed that Telfer and John Jones had become a fine songwriting team, specializing in catchy melodies and thoughtful lyrics.The traditional melody was intact but the spirit had definitely changed.This project gave a higher profile to Tabor and her Oysterband colleagues, and as a combined group they toured extensively and received press coverage from mainstream publications like Rolling Stone, which rarely gave significant attention to roots music.Unfortunately that higher profile was merely temporary (at least in the United States).On December 12, 2003, Oysterband organized a 25th anniversary concert that was held at the Forum, Kentish Town, London.Among the guest performers were June Tabor, an acoustic version of Chumbawamba and James o' Grady (uilllean pipes, violin, whistles, vocal);
