loved the "total package" of

(Avengers), Herb Trimpe
(Hulk), John Romita Sr.Make no mistake:
Bronze Age Marvel was
*absolutely* an Art
Powerhouse....Age stories
fans of that era had little
access to...Rich Buckler's
Kirby riffs both echoed
Kirby's work and, in some
ways, improved upon it by
"splicing" it with Buckler's
more polished Neal Adams
sensibilities, creating a
hybrid of astounding power and

Picked this up on a whim like
the Prof...Nice to see the love for Plastic
Man...Man, that thing was insane!Went by
the groundbreaking name of
COMIC BOOK, I kid you not.Thing is, I know
that I can be overly enticed
by novelty in comics
sometimes.Throw a genre at me
that comics haven't really
tackled before and I'm
inclined to look past its
faults just because it's
breaking ground.Kirkman's dialogue can shift
from ""naturalistic to
"cheeseball melodrama" on a
dime.My particular
pet peeve is when characters
start giving speeches and I
hit one of those pages with
huge dialogue balloons or the
same person speaking for
paragraphs and paragraphs on
end.I'll
say this though: with undead
funnybooks popping up right
and left like extras in
THRILLER, WALKING DEAD's still
the top of the heap.You get
your name on the back of one
DEEP SLEEPER trade and all the
ensuing girls and booze just
pull you right back in.Marvel instead
of DC because Marvel was
clearly superior in EVERY way.Great
visuals for the tots, great
wordplay for the grownups,
great comic overall.That scores mad points wit'
the bitches!Oh damn I'm

With Superman, from the
beginning, the appeal was
limited to childish wish
fulfillment (nothing wrong
with that at all).GLADIATOR, which I think
Chaykin is currently adapting
in comic for.If it could have happened, it
would have happened by now!Then, there's the revenge
angle.Man, which had the
advantage of coming along
about a quarter of a century
later was the deal.Let's
hear it for Stan and Steve,
