PvP combat in CRPGs has its roots in various MUDs like Gemstone III.The term PvP originated in text based MUDs played on bulletin board systems like MajorMUDD and Usurper. These games had open worlds where any player could attack any other player as long as they were not at a safe spot in town like the Bank.Player versus player was coined sometime in the late 1980s to refer to the combat between players that resulted in the loser being penalized in some way.Blizzard North and released by Blizzard Entertainment in December, 1996, also allowed PvP combat. With the introduction of Diablo cheat programs and methods, players were able to initiate PvP combat in areas not intended by its designers or far outside the power of a normal player character. Many players, though, enjoyed PvP dueling, which was consensual PvP between the players.Other early MMORPGs, including Meridian 59 (1996), Ultima Online (1997), and Tibia (1998) also had PvP combat as a feature. This system was also implemented in Tibia, where death included significant penalty, and killing someone inflicted considerable harm to their character. In Meridian 59, the game tried to focus PvP by having different political factions for players to join. With the popularity of EverQuest in 1999, primarily consisting of PvM elements (with the exception of limited PvP on one specific server), PvP became a negative for MMORPG players and developers.PvP has been included in other games such as Asheron's Call in late 1999, Diablo II in 2000, Dark Age of Camelot in 2001, Asheron's Call 2 in 2002 and Shadowbane in 2003, Runescape in the early 2001.While these games included PvP, they still contained large portions of prerequisite PvM, mostly to build characters.Critics argued the comprehensiveness of this type of PvP lacked in comparison to Ultima Online's implementation before the release of the Age of Shadows expansion. Some MMORPGs currently in development are starting to use competitive PvP, such as dueling, as a main feature.Though many MUDs have gone the route of roleplay intensive gameplay (RPI), or followed the hack 'n slash trends in popular graphical MMORPGs, some MUDs have focused strongly on the PvP gameplay.MUDs can allow for better PvP combat implementation.MUDs who lay claim to advanced PvP combat systems are God Wars II, Achaea, MUME, Clandestine MUD, Realms of Despair, DragonRealms: The Fallen, Everwar, and Duris: Land of Bloodlust.PvP resulting in a character's death. Some games offer "open PvP" (also sometimes called "world PvP"), where one player can attack another without warning anywhere in the game world.PvP can also create additional facets in the community. In Ultima Online, a rift formed between those who enjoyed PKing, those who enjoyed hunting the PKs and those who simply did not want to fight at all.The Renaissance expansion later added a Trammel facet where PvP was not allowed, giving some out to the UO crowd that did not wish to engage in PvP at all.In PvE, the goal is to learn the pattern of the monsters and often to exploit those patterns for fastest gains.Fighting challenging monsters in online games usually requires a period of recuperation before fighting another monster, and this downtime is the perfect chance for a PKer to strike.PvP, and more specifically PKing, goes against the predictability of the game.PKs who consistently harass players by "corpse camping", "resurrection killing", or player killing without material purpose can be labelled Griefers
Character death in an online game usually comes with a penalty (though some games remove it from PvP combat), so habitual PKers can find themselves ostracized by the local community. In some games a character will die many times and the player must often sacrifice some experience points (XP) or gold to restore that character to life.Player killer killing
Player killer killing, or PKK, is a form of revenge or vigilante killing.Dueling ladders and leagues setup by fans are common for most MMORPGs that have PvP.Runescape was the first graphical MMORPG to debut a formal dueling system ingame (Ballista); other MMORPGs such as City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Lineage 2 and RuneScape feature PvP as competitive, consensual dueling in a group setting. This removes the unpredictable element from PvP, allowing players to challenge each other on "even" ground.Dueling is often considered an inferior and less challenging form of PvP by the more hardcore PvP communities.Through various means, this flag can be turned on, allowing PvP combat with other people who have also turned on their flag.In Star Wars Galaxies, the flag may be turned off by interacting with faction specific NPCs located throughout the game. This is sometimes called the "revenge flag".Use of this 'bounty' system is not standardized among MMORPGs, and there are debates raging about how to 'police' the system to avoid abuse.PK face player 'Bounty Hunters', who specialize in hunting down those listed as Outlaws on the metagame community.NPC whose background, choices and abilities may be determined by a plotwriter.Still, the most direct and unambiguous PvP conflict is combat. Some LARPs, especially the larger ones, make complex PvP a principle element of the game. However, it can be hard to maintain PVP alongside some kinds of PvM plot.PvP, also known as Player vs Player, is a webcomic, written and drawn by Scott Kurtz, with around 100,000 unique visitors per day (as of August 2005).On February 1, 2007, it became the subject of its own animated series.Originally, PvP focused on video gaming and the larger "nerd culture" including comics and RPGs.Kurtz normally updates the strip every day but has often missed updates since the comic's inception. The PVP hosting company Speakeasy.Print versions

Previously, Dork Storm Press printed 6 issues of original content as well as a trade paperback of online strips. The Dork Storm issues were collected into a trade paperback entitled "The Dork Ages."Kurtz said he made this offer because of his dissatisfaction with the terms offered to cartoonists by syndicates. One newspaper, The Kansas City Star, briefly ran one PvP comic per week in the fall of 2004.PvP was included with the purchase of the City of Heroes collector's edition, featuring Cole, Brent, Francis, and Skull and their misadventures in the game, depicted as the actual characters they were playing, which, appropriately enough, resembled their 'real world' appearances.PVP won the Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic July 21, 2006.Eight episodes are available to subscribers at this time.Cole is (relatively speaking) the straight man of the group and the one most likely to insist on actually making the magazine.Cole has a longstanding 'rivalry' of some sort with Max Powers, who runs Powerplay Magazine in the offices one floor above the PvP offices. For a brief time, Cole was forced to allow a merger between the two magazine companies, but as of the strips from November 30th to December 2, which concluded a storyline called 'pandamonium', that had been running for several days in the strip, this changed, as Cole came into a large sum of money from the World Wildlife Fund, which he will receive annually because of a giant panda that is more or less living somewhere in the PvP offices.Due to the large amount of money Cole has received (though the official amount has yet to be disclosed), he has since bought out Max's side of the partnership and once again runs PvP on his own terms.Apple Computer (and recovering Amiga) fanatic. At one time, Brent was an elementary school art teacher."Panda", "Panda Attack" or "Giant Panda" are mentioned, Brent is immediately mauled by one.Brent got revenge in the August 6 2005 edition of the strip as he mauled a panda in a parallel universe.Brent's name was originally inspired by the Crayola crayon color "Burnt sienna".Brent also bears a resemblance to Sketch Turner, the protagonist of the game Comix Zone for SEGA Genesis.EverQuest and World of Warcraft, and also chats online with friends she's made in the series. In high school, she and her friend Sam were caught stealing the answers to their chemistry final.Needless to say, this has delighted Brent and Francis, since they tend to be the ones Jade rolls her eyes at in disgust when they're engaged in their antics.Easily excitable and always eager to be on the cutting edge of fads and technology, Francis represents every 'annoying gamerkid' stereotype. He loves his PC to an almost scary degree and routinely gets into arguments with Brent over Macs.He could be considered a young genius because he works for a gaming magazine at the tender age of 16, but he claims he only took the job so he could play video games all day long. Also, Cole mentions that he knew Francis' mother from high school, so Francis' continued employment may be a favor on Cole's part.He is rumored to be a total Gaylord (who collects pony statuettes) in the internet community due to a leakage on a Wiki article ostensibly by a close source (Marcy).Pete's Dragon, although the cast currently believes he is assigned to Francis.Nervous and childlike, he has an occasional girlfriend named Sonya, although technically Skull is genderless. The comic's cast page states that, as a mythological creature, Skull's only real need is attention, something not in short supply around the office. He also quit the magazine so he and Jase could play video games together without being hassled to actually produce anything.Recently Robbie and Jase had a falling out when Jase started dating Robbie's gardener and had less time for him.Cole, Max Powers runs Powerplay magazine. While seemingly jovial and outgoing, for some reason Max is generally despised by the PvP crew. While perhaps not as truly evil as Brent and Cole claim, he can doubtlessly be quite annoying.Powerplay recently merged with PvP to prevent PvP's certain financial ruin.Because of his narcissistic attitude, Max was unable to see Skull, and was unaware of the troll's existence.Brent by a giant panda, and the fact that it appears said panda is now more or less living somewhere in the PvP offices.Francis' long time FPS opponent and romantic interest. She is an avid fan of anime, especially Sailor Moon.Sonya's and a radio producer.Gwen had a crush on Jade and kissed her once at party. She is a sly coquette who aims to seduce most of the men on the PvP staff just to irritate Jade, not necessarily because she wants male attention.Skull accidentally zapped him with his "genius machine", granting him superhuman intelligence.Kirby also recently had a seizure. After the merger he began working at PvP.He and Miranda have decided to start dating, but Miranda posed the question of keeping it a secret from Jade and Brent since Reggie works with them.Based on a friend of Kurtz's.In real life, Angie and Scott were married on February 24, 1996.Although not a part of the official PvP Universe and therefore not normally seen with the other characters, Kurtz's dad, a German immigrant, occasionally appears in the comic to share his views on profanity, modern American culture, or whatever else happens to strike his fancy.According to Kurtz, everything the character says is transcribed from his real father's words. However, at some point between the time the robot was placed at the theater and the release date for Episode III (Francis tried to make national news by camping out for Episode III before Episode II came out), the theater was turned into an antique store. It was discovered that the robot was not really Francis when it shorted out while making out with Marcy. The plan failed and the robot was taken as evidence after Scratch Fury escaped.Ricky "Turtle" Tuttle was formerly a student at Francis's school.Tuttle has since returned as a ghost; Francis finds him no less annoying.Soon after his appearance he attempted to steal Brent's wallet with a hug and farewell advice but was caught. He often uses Robbie and Jase's slang terms, although in a much more sophisticated manner. Many of the running gags in PVP are actually references to running gags from other media (television programs, films, games, cartoons, etc.Brent often becomes the subject of ridicule because of his exclusive use of a Macintosh computer.Brent and Cole appearing as 70s detectives Bulldog and Cooch, invariably ending in an explosion.Small strips about what Scott Kurtz's basset hound has done.Breaking the "Fourth Wall" which inevitably leads to a character, usually Brent, being beheaded. The fictional PVP Magazine has appeared many times as a prop in Real Life Comics, but has never appeared in PVP itself, with the exception of an April 19, 2006, guest comic by Kristofer Straub.Scott's dad calling to complain or ask questions about the strips.Jade's planning of Halloween parties and Brent dreading them.Occasional references to popular MMORPG's, beginning first with Ultima Online, then Jade playing EverQuest, and more recently World Of Warcraft.Skull doing something on the phone (listening on someone else's conversation or making prank calls) then getting caught doing it and literally saying "click" and "dial toooone" in a feeble attempt to fool the person who caught him.In World of Warcraft, player vs.This cannot be done in cities.Players that complete a battleground receive 'marks' for the appropriate battleground, which are used as a sort of currency to purchase rewards from PvP vendors.Available in 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 formats.PvP Flag is turned on (or if two players meet in a contested territory) that player can engage the other one in combat. In Battlegrounds you will be fighting people close to your level. In dueling you can choose whom you wish to fight. In Open Combat (only seen on PvP servers and any time your PvP flag is on) players 40 levels higher than you can choose to fight you if they so desire and you cannot decline.World PvP

Killing players in some specific locations in Outland can also give the player PvP Tokens such as Mark of Honor Hold, Mark of Thrallmar and Halaa Battle Token. These work similar to Marks of Honor but can be redeemed only at PVP vendors of the faction the token is specific to.For example, only PVP vendors associated with Honor Hold sells PVP items for Marks of Honor Hold.Generally, PVP tokens offer items which are aimed at players who are below level 70.PvP Rewards

PvP also refers to PvP Realms, which are Realms where Open Combat happens much more often since around level 20 players will be pushed into adventuring in contested territories.See PvP Flag for more information, or you can also see the official Realm Types page and PvP Combat page. This page was last modified 08:40, 19 January 2008.Content is available under GNU Free Documentation License 1.To others, it is a way of life. This page compiles some assorted information about the mechanics of PvP combat. The top of this page has links to other sections with more detail on individual aspects of the PvP system. For a more fundamental explanation of the PvP system, see our Realm Types page. The Honor System, World PvP, and Arena pages have detailed information about the three main PvP systems in the game.NPC, suffer an increasing penalty to their resurrection timer. The maximum time penalty is a five minute wait before the option to resurrect appears.Crowd Control Spells and Diminishing Returns
Crowd Control spells such as Charm, Fear, and Stun are subject to diminishing returns in PvP.Crowd Control effects in PvP will last no longer than 12 seconds instead of the full duration, with a chance of a heartbeat resist.Healing and buffing NPCs will not flag you for PvP unless those NPCs are in combat.Members of your faction who are participating in PvP have light green names.Skills will not increase from use while engaged in PvP."PvP," is the core of the competition that puts the "competitive" in the CORPG.There are many varieties of PvP competition. You will sometimes find yourself on a randomly selected team, though more often you will choose your group before entering a PvP contest.Your objective might be as simple as eliminating the other team or it could be far more complex.Check out the PvP Primer series for a detailed account of the basics. The PvP Zone
PvP combat takes place in a region of the world dedicated solely to testing the mettle of heroes.PvP characters begin in this PvP zone.Creating a PvP Character
You might join PvP combat with a fully developed level 20 roleplaying character. This will give you a wider variety of choices when it comes to skill selection and equipment, and experienced players tend to find such characters to perform strongly in PvP.If you want to get right to the fighting, you can create a new PvP character that starts at level 20 and comes with a smaller assortment of skills and equipment.PvP characters can still be customized to a certain extent through weapon and armor choices, and will have access to all skills you've unlocked on your account for their professions.PvP Combat
PvP battles consist of two or more teams of four to twelve players apiece all battling for supremacy.Team up with fellow guild members or other online players for PvP battles in Arenas, Guild Challenges, Tournament play, or Alliance Battles.Arena matches don't require you to form a party; the Arena creates teams automatically from available players. The Arena is a great place to find PvP action any time.Guild Challenges pit guild against guild in a variety of situations that will test your skills and team spirit.Tournament play lets your guild compete for worldwide Guild Wars supremacy.Talk to the Kurzick or Luxon NPC in your guild hall to travel to a contested alliance area.Victories and losses in alliance battles will shape the border on the world map between the two factions.Heroes and fight against other players from around the world and their customized groups of Heroes.Tournament Play
Guild Wars features continuous tournament action wherein tens of thousands of teams compete for ranking and for the top position on the Guild Ladder. In the international Guild Wars tournament, countries compete for worldwide Guild Wars supremacy.Morale Boost: The morale boost removes a percentage of any existing death penalties (DP) from all team members. If your team has a morale boost, each member receives a boost to maximum Health and Energy.Resurrection: Priests, when present, will resurrect dead team members every two minutes.Situational Awareness
Being aware of your surroundings and your current situation at all times is crucial for surviving in PvP.It's a complex set of assessments that must be constantly reappraised, since PvP combat is a constantly changing battlefield.Strength in Numbers
In any PvP situation, having allies to watch your back is a good thing. When battling in a group, such as in structured PvP situations such as Arena and Battlegrounds, its crucial that everyone work together as a team.Instead of bunching up, try to be close enough together where everyone is in range of beneficial effects such as healing spells, and where you can quickly assist a comrade.Consider that you may be vulnerable to attacks if you separate from your group, and you can weaken them by leaving them a player short. Some teams actually work on this as a strategy, pulling apart strong groups or baiting them into ambushes.Equipment
Upgrade your equipment with stats that will assist your survivability in PvP.Racial Abilities
Try to learn the opposing faction's racial abilities, as some of them can be used in PvP.All Night Elves can use Shadowmeld, which makes them invisible much like a rogue's Stealth.Gnomes have Escape Artist, which lets them escape from immobilizing or movement speed reducing effects. When chasing down or escaping from other players, those with an epic mount have a huge PvP advantage over those that don't.The quest reward Carrot on a Stick grants the same benefit.Pursuing and Escaping
There is a wide range of player spells and abilities that can momentarily prevent or impede players from running: Polymorph, Fear, Charge, Entangling Roots, Concussive Shot, Frost Shock, Curse of Exhaustion, and many more.Hunters have tracking abilities which makes them harder to escape. Many items, particularly consumable items and those made by certain tradeskills, can assist your survivability.Netherweave Nets which are made with Tailoring. In addition, potions are extremely handy for PvP.Healing and mana potions utility is undeniable, as their timely use can literally be the difference between life and death.Hide there, bandage there, eat there, and be safe. While fighting, use obstacles in the terrain to break line of sight from ranged attackers.Distances in Combat
Standing right next to that enemy warrior isn't such a good idea.Neither is running away and turning your back to that Hunter that can shoot you in the back from far away.Distance and direction are important in different ways for each class.Learn your ideal distances for combat and when and where to move.Stealth
Rogues and Druids are dangerous PvP opponents because of their stealth capabilities. If you hear the distinctive "whoosh" sound that occurs when a character enters stealth mode or is detected in stealth mode, then you should immediately be on your guard for a surprise attack. Some skills such as Flare or Perception can detect stealthed characters, and certain items can improve your chance of stealth detection.Even at higher levels, the movement speed when stealthed is slower than normal.First Aid
First Aid is a must, and since you can take all secondary professions, you should learn and develop it as soon as possible.Bandages are extremely useful in PvP combat, especially those created with high levels of First Aid skill. You can use bandages in combination with crowd control abilities, giving yourself a quick window of opportunity to bandage up.Sometimes in the heat of battle you may not get the chance to complete a bandage's full "casting time," so having better bandages will give more value from that time, as each tick of bandaging will heal more damage.By watching what animation displays when the enemy is casting, you will then know how to counter it.On the other hand, the counter to that is to cast a spell from a different school of magic to fake your opponent out, then switch to the real spell you want to cast.Zone Types
On PvP realms, a given zone can be either friendly, contested, or enemy territory. Each zone type has its own rules governing PvP eligibility. If you're in a contested zone, you can be freely attacked by the enemy, and vice versa. If you're in a red (enemy) zone, they can attack you but you can't attack them unless and until they strike first. If you're in a green (friendly) zone, they can't attack you unless you attack them first or you are flagged for PvP.Learn more about PvP zone rules.Pay Attention
Surviving on a PvP realm requires constant vigilance.Look over your shoulder any time you're in a contested area.If you're not seeking this kind of tension, consider a normal (PvE) realm instead of PvP.It's not for everyone, but you'll find that most people that enjoy playing on a PvP realm love the exhilaration of never being safe.It takes patience, skill, and the willingness to keep up with PvP strategies. This usually occurs in the context of being overpowered by several enemy players, by a player of a significantly higher level, or while in a vulnerable state such as being low on health or while fighting a monster. On your career in a PvP realm, ganking will be a common occurrence, particularly while leveling. That way, if enemy players attack while your group is doing a quest, you'll have a better chance of surviving. The mere presence of other friendly players is often enough to dissuade attacks, particularly from solo players.Frequency of World PvP
The frequency with which world PvP (PvP combat outside of Battlegrounds and Arenas) occurs depends on several factors.PvPing and will want to attack any enemy they see just to experience PvP and without any apparent reason.PvP activity, particularly in zones with World PvP objectives such as Silithus, Eastern Plaguelands, and many of the zones in Outland. So don't get scared if you're getting killed too much in your first contested areas; it gets easier as you level up.Eat, drink, or bandage after every kill. You'll find it much easier than during primetime.Typically, these are the ones that are remote and longer to travel to.An example of a quest type that is very different in a PvP environment is an escort quest in a contested zone.Questing in a group is generally a good idea overall.Sometimes the Horde and the Alliance can both quest in the same areas without conflict. These channels can give you a heads up to enemy locations. If you want to help out, let people know in general or local defense if you spot the enemy.Get together with other players who are getting killed by the same enemy you are, group up with them, get yourselves organized, and hunt him down.Take paths that players wouldn't normally take, or travel parallel to the road but out of view of it.This is especially important in enemy territory, where the roads are crawling with enemy players. If there are any buildings, trees, or other objects you can hide behind when resurrecting, you should take advantage of them.If you have a mount, hit the resurrect button, then jam the mount summon button as soon as possible (it's recommended that you place it as a hotkey on your action bar).Instances
The enemy cannot attack you while you are inside instances. In the heated battles of PvP realms, it's easy to get fired up and take things a bit too personally at times. As long as you stay within the rules, you're OK.Be warned that constantly harassing and killing players over and over, attacking them when they are fighting monsters, and camping their corpses may hurt your reputation among the players on the realm.Opposing faction players may band together and hunt you down with extreme prejudice.Overview
Playing Guild Wars can generally be split into two more or less separate parts: Player versus Player (PvP) and Player versus Environment (PvE).PvP arenas, as long as they have access to the area where the arena is hosted.PvP is a competitive game mode where human players can only fight against other human players.Only in PvP can Faction with Balthazar, fame, rank and guild rating be gained. There are five different PvP modes:
Arena battles
Guild vs Guild battles
Heroes' Ascent
Alliance Battles
Hero Battles
While the PvP outposts are also separated into territories just like PvE, when playing matches your opponent might be from any territory even if you don't go to the International District.PvP Characters
Each PvE character can take part in PvP matches, providing the player's character has already reached the PvE location where the battle takes place.Players can also create PvP Characters. They can take part in all PvP matches (except low level arenas), even if no PvE character on that account has reached that location.PvP characters cannot enter explorable areas (besides the Isle of the Nameless) or cities.PvP Characters can unlock items with Faction, including: skills, runes, Heroes (Provided you have Nightfall or Eye of the North), and item upgrades.Arena Battles
Arena battles pit two teams of four players against each other. There are two kind of arenas, Random Arenas and Team Arenas. In Random Arenas, players are randomly put together into teams.Notes:
Arena battles are fast paced.Random Arenas are often used by many players as a "quick fix" of PvP.For these reasons, Random Arenas are also a good way to try out PvP for new players. So if you need to leave, do so after your party has won the battle, but before the timer for the next map starts.Teams consist of eight players, with no more than two henchmen The tournament consists of several consecutive maps. The losers drop out, the winners advance to the next round. The amount of teams is also determined by the map the player is on.For example, some maps can support two teams, while others can support up to 5 or 6 teams but only have a maximum of 4 teams playing against each other at once. For more information, see Heroes' Ascent.Guild vs Guild Battles
Guild Battles are the highest form of PvP in Guild Wars.Elaborate builds and strategies are used during guild matches.Automated tournaments
Automated tournaments are thrice daily and monthly tournaments for GvG and Hero Battle tournaments.Etiquette
Make every effort to carry a Resurrection Signet in your build, as it can turn the tide of battle.Monks, Ritualists and Paragons can carry other resurrect skills, or none at all, as they may not have time to resurrect. It is generally considered polite for players to say "good game" or "GG" after a match (although sometimes it is used as sarcasm). It is also considered polite to say "gl and hf" ("good luck and have fun") or some variation thereof at the beginning of a match.Leaving at the beginning of a match is also considered quite rude and is seen often in Random Arenas, though has been reduced in effectiveness with the dishonour update.Killing yourself intentionally is extremely unsporting, and generally irks players on both sides. This is most often done by a griefer using Necromancer skills.Running away from your enemies for the sole purpose of prolonging a match is considered rude.Making a team of only Healing Monks with the purpose of irritating the enemy by holding a long match is extremely annoying.Notes
The Background color of your guild's cape change to match the color of the team you are on.The emblem will remain the same.In two team PvP matches, the colors are red and blue. For three teams, yellow is added. For four teams, add cyan.Other colors are purple and green. It is impossible to hide your cape in PvP unlike PvE.This page was last modified 01:48, 14 January 2008.
