accomplished DJ, Producer, Label Head and overall industry figure.The 'Abstract Message' bit has no meaning ...QB: 2005 will be even crazier, I hope.On that I'll be collaborating with many in the usual cast of characters as well as some new conspirators.JW: Do you feel that you're career balances more on your DJ or production skills or do you think that a healthy balance of both pulls in the checks?For example, DJing in front of people puts my production in perspective as I can immediately see the reaction to a new track.On the other hand, being a producer helps me put my DJ sets together so that sonically and contextually, they flow.JW: You've produced quite a few albums for Astralwerks.That said, being independent is a lot more fun.I'm free to work with dozens of labels and people around the world.I'm thankful that I had the chance to be with Astralwerks...With a major the concern become more so about sales.The A+R is second guessing your work trying to determine if it is something that will sell enough records to make it worthwhile (versus your advance, the amount they've put in the project, and so on).The indie label guy may have an idea of what he wants his release or label to sound like which may be quite specialist and not at all related to sales potential.Of course the ideal situation is to have a label that believes that you, as an artist, will work best when allowed to be creative without restraint.The New York Times Company.
