and more...Lawrence River pulses with life and along its shores where Quebec's major cities, Montreal and Quebec City lie.Three distinct topographical regions make up Quebec.The Appalachian Uplands are part of the rugged, dramatic mountain range that extends southward to Alabama and includes the Eastern Townships.Chocs, which form the backbone of the peninsula.This more hospitable region is where the majority of Quebec's population resides.Cartier later discovered the island, which became the city of Montreal, but it wasn't until 1608 that Samuel de Champlain established the first permanent European settlement near present day Quebec City.In 1763, the Treaty of Paris ceded Canada to Great Britain.Shortly thereafter, however, the Quebec Act of 1774 was passed by the British Parliament, extending the regions borders, making French the official language along with English and restoring French civil law.Unfortunately, though this act was conciliatory toward the French, their troubles were far from over.Agitated by this measure and believing it to be a return of French military power, the American colonists under Generals Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold invaded Quebec, taking control of Montreal.The following year, British troops recaptured Montreal.True to their French heritage, the Quebecois take their cuisine seriously which is reflected in the amount and quality of the restaurants in Montreal and elsewhere.
