Queen Soweto biography, Queen Soweto discography

Date() + " ") document. No trip to Soweto in Johannesburg is complete without a visit to Regina Mundi, the largest Catholic Church in the most populous black urban residential area in the country. Not only has the vast church always been a spiritual haven for thousands of Sowetans, it has also played a pivotal role in the township's history of resistance against apartheid.Soweto uprisings, when police stormed through its doors, firing live ammunition at fleeing students. What started out as "church services" often ended up as political rallies. They started off at Regina Mundi and ended up at Avalon Cemetery. With buckets of water at the ready, they managed to douse the teargas canisters thrown into the church by police. The broken marble alter, the bullet holes in the ceilings and the damaged figure of Christ all bear testimony to the terrible lack of restraint shown by police that day.Regina Mundi has always been a home to the community of Soweto and has functioned as a centre for important community events. And on 30 November 1997, declared Regina Mundi Day, former President Nelson Mandela paid tribute to the church during a ceremony marking its restoration."Graduates of Regina Mundi are making important contributions to the reconstruction and development of our country."Regina Mundi served the greater Soweto community in times of need.It was this stance that earned Regina Mundi a reputation as one of Gauteng's greatest protest centres, a literal battlefield between forces of democracy and those who did not hesitate to violate a place of religion with teargas, dogs and guns.Today the church is as much "the people's church" as ever, swamped by the demands of the community in its midst, whose needs are different but perhaps even more challenging.Mazibuko clearly finds his job overwhelming at times.People come to you in need of help and sometimes you don't have the means to help them," says Mazibuko.Black Madonna looks serenely down from her vantage point to the right of the alter and the rows and rows of gleaming pews are a welcome invitation to the thousands who attend mass every Sunday.Regina Mundi can seat 2 000 people and has space for a further 5 000 standing. The "Queen of Soweto" has come a long way since her humble beginnings.Today an impressive park built by the City of Johannesburg, with a fountain, benches and green lawns, is in front of the Church.Memorial stones, including a "peace pole" donated by Japanese Christians, and a plaque documenting the Church's history are in evidence outside. In March 1998 Regina Mundi made international headlines after a visit by President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary. But the story didn't end there.Makobane chose to base his sermon on adultery at a time when the scandal around Clinton's adulterous affair hung heavily over the heads of the presidential pair.Makobane recalled the parable of the adulterous woman saved by Jesus Christ from being stoned to death."Clinton looked sombre and rocked on his heels as the priest read the text. But Makobane's sermon preached forgiveness as Jesus forgave the adulterous woman.Published for the International Marketing Council of South Africa.Reliance on the information this website contains is at your own risk.Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country, with Census 2001 putting its population at close to a million.Johannesburg, Soweto was, from the start, a product of segregationist planning. The inner city was later to be reserved for white occupation as the policy of segregation took root. The perennial problems of Soweto have, since its inception, included poor housing, overcrowding, high unemployment and poor infrastructure. This has seen settlements of shacks made of corrugated iron sheets becoming part of the Soweto landscape.Apartheid planning did not provide much in terms of infrastructure, and it is only in recent years that the democratic government has spearheaded moves to plant trees, develop parks, and provide electricity and running water to the township.American influence runs deep, but is adapted to local conditions.Rich political history Soweto's rich political history has guaranteed it a place on the world map. Those who know very little else about South Africa are often familiar with the word "Soweto" and the township's significance in the struggle against apartheid. The 1976 student uprising, also known as the Soweto Uprisings, began in Soweto and spread from there to the rest of the country.Others include mathematician Prof Thamsanqa Kambule, medical doctor Nthato Motlana and prominent journalist Aggrey Klaaste.Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows all emerged from the township, and remain among the biggest soccer teams in the Premier Soccer League.Just a few kilometres drive from Diepkloof is Orlando, home to Nelson Mandela's first house, not surprisingly a popular tourist attraction.Mandela stayed here with his then wife, Winnie, before he was imprisoned in 1961 and jailed for 27 years.Mandela, and contains memorabilia from the short time they lived there together before Mandela went into hiding.Mandela now lives in Houghton, a suburb several kilometres north of Johanneburg's city centre, with his third wife, Graca, widow of the late Mozambican president Samora Machel.Mandela in an affluent part of Orlando West.Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house, the residence of ANC stalwarts Walter and Albertina Sisula, and the Hector Pieterson memorial museum are in the same neighbourhood.Despite the high unemployment rate there is a cheerful energy, a bustle of activity, with informal traders plying their wares on every corner.Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, one has a panoramic view of Soweto.Diepkloof Extension, home to the relatively affluent.Although they are small, locals take pride in their houses, and put much effort into making them habitable and cosy. One example is Pimville Extension, home to the emerging black middle class. The suburb boasts beautiful houses, the roads are good, playgrounds and schools are in mint condition.Soweto offers plenty of other less aesthetically pleasing sights for the visitor. Then there are the squatter camp communities, euphemistically called "informal settlements", where poverty is palpable. They remain in Johannesburg in search of the elusive "gold".For those looking for a night out in the ghetto, Soweto offers some popular joints for relaxation. There are plenty of venues that offer a relaxed atmosphere, pleasant music (both dance and ballads) and a jolly good time.Perhaps the most popular of these joints is Wandie's Place in Dube.Other taverns in the area are Pallazo Distella in Dube, Club 707, a restaurant and bar or Ubuntu Kraal, both in Orlando West.Shebeens are local drinking joints. The Rainbow Nation One country, many peoples. Our photo gallery celebrates the diversity of the rainbow nation of Africa.Johannesburg is the City of Gold, Cape Town the Mother City and Port Elizabeth the Friendly City.Published for the International Marketing Council of South Africa.Reliance on the information this website contains is at your own risk.Funerals, points out Father Vusi Mazibuko, who has been pastor at the church for the past four years, were often political affairs. They started off at Regina Mundi and ended up at Avalon Cemetery. With buckets of water at the ready, they managed to douse the teargas canisters thrown into the church by police.Christ all bear testimony to the terrible lack of restraint shown by police that day.Soweto and has functioned as a centre for important community events.Mazibuko clearly finds his job overwhelming at times.Regina Mundi can seat 2 000 people and has space for a further 5 000 standing. The "Queen of Soweto" has come a long way since her humble beginnings.Christians, and a plaque documenting the Church's history are in evidence outside.Mundi has continued to play an important role in Soweto and society in general. In March 1998 Regina Mundi made international headlines after a visit by President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary.Since Clinton is a Baptist and his wife a Methodist, this constituted a breach of the cardinal rules of the Catholic Church.Clintons communion when they joined the rest of the congregation. He's a child of God and came willingly to share the Eucharist with us and pray with us ...But the story didn't end there.Mrs Clinton's head was bowed throughout the reading."Queen of Soweto, south Africa.Soweto, Alexandra and Ivory Park. How are we going to break this news to the people?Alexandra and 5 percent in Ivory Park. Most of the debts far exceed the value of the properties. This magnificent 52 strong, choir, styled with a contemporary feel, leaves all who hear it stunned with emotion. It is small wonder that they are charting a meteoric rise to international fame.Soweto Gospel Choir is wonderful!!Their new CD Blessed was released in
