television.Their marriage produced two sons, David
born in Chicago on October 24, 1936 and Eric Hilliard (Ricky) born in Teaneck, New Jersey,
on May 8, 1940.The best jazz virtuosos, were
performing more frequently in concert settings as opposed to dance halls.Never a
great instrumentalist, Ozzie continued to pursue a living in the old vaudeville fashion.Ricky joined the family in 1942.The characters of David and Ricky were present from the beginning.When the time came to
introduce the children, young actors were hired.The movie
earned moderate box office receipts, but proved the Nelsons were ready for their own
television show.TV in the fall of
1952.The show ran fourteen seasons with four hundred an thirty five episodes.During his childhood, Ricky suffered with asthma attacks, and grew up thin and sickly.However beginning with his 1952 television debut he went from a scrawny twelve year old
prankster to a rakishly charming young man in
1956.Ricky was remembered as quiet and well behaved at Bancroft Junior
High.In 1956, rock and roll was sweeping the country and old styles of music out of the way.Legend has it that Ricky was dating a beautiful teenager named Arlene.Ricky quickly said that he was about to make his own record.Ricky pleaded with Ozzie to help him make a record after all Ozzie had been a recording
star in his own right.Ozzie finally agreed and through his connections Ricky became part
of the entertainment at Knott's Berry Farm.For a period of years, beginning in 1957, each episode would conclude with a song by Ricky Nelson and his band.His principal influences were Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.James Burton that he never missed an episode.He was all of sixteen years old, and this was just the beginning.All totaled, Nelson would score three dozen hits, making him one of the most successfully prolific of all rock and rollers.Even though his role on TV had been the launch pad, he more than made the grade as a rock and roller.Moreover, he had good taste in musicians, hiring guitarist extraordinaire James Burton as the mainstay of his band.His life ended tragically in 1985 when his tour plane caught fire and crashed near a highway in DeKalb, Texas, killing him and six others.Kristin have kept the family name alive.Tracy Nelson became a successful actress, while twin songs Gunnar and Matthew enjoyed a spell of popularity in the early Nineties as the rock duo Nelson.Ricky Nelson, hits Number One for the first of two weeks.Rick Nelson, hits Number one for the first of two weeks.December 31, 1985: Rick Nelson is killed when his tour plane catches fire and crashes in DeKalb, Texas.January 6, 1986: Rick Nelson is buried following a memorial service in Hollywood Hills, California.January 21, 1987: Ricky Nelson is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 2nd annual induction dinner.Bop Baby
