A variety of content management features which allow this organization to easily manage a Web site that has a great deal of text content. It is best known in the field of internal combustion engines but also has other applications, e.The earliest internal combustion engines used a flame, or a heated tube, for ignition but these were quickly replaced by systems using an electric spark.Magneto systems
The simplest form of spark ignition is that using a magneto. The engine spins a magnet inside a coil, and also operates a contact breaker, interrupting the current and causing the voltage to be increased sufficiently to jump a small gap.The spark plugs are connected directly from the magneto output. Some older automobiles had both a magneto system and a battery actuated system (see below) running simultaneously to ensure proper ignition under all conditions with the limited performance each system provided at the time.Switchable systems
The output of a magneto depends on the speed of the engine, and therefore starting can be problematic. The Model T (built into the flywheel) differed from modern implementations by not providing high voltage directly at the output; the maximum voltage produced was about 30 volts, and therefore also had to be run through the spark coil to provide high enough voltage for ignition, as described above, although the coil would not "buzz" continuously in this case, only going through one cycle per spark. In either case, the high voltage was switched to the appropriate spark plug by the timer mounted on the front of the engine, the equivalent of the modern distributor. With the universal adaptation of electrical starting for automobiles, and the concomitant availability of a large battery to provide a constant source of electricity, magneto systems were abandoned for systems which interrupted current at battery voltage, used an ignition coil (a type of autotransformer) to step the voltage up to the needs of the ignition, and a distributor to route the ensuing pulse to the correct spark plug at the correct time.Delco) and introduced in the 1910 Cadillac. This ignition was developed by Charles Kettering and was a wonder in its day.It consisted of a single coil, points (the switch), a capacitor and a distributor set up to allocate the spark from the ignition coil timed to the correct cylinder. The heart of the system is the distributor. The distributor contains a rotating cam running off the engine's drive, a set of breaker points, a condenser, a rotor and a distributor cap.An alternating current in the primary induces alternating magnetic field in the coil's core. For an ignition coil, one end of windings of both the primary and secondary are connected together. The other end of the primary is connected to the points within the distributor. The other end of the secondary is connected, via the distributor cap and rotor, to the spark plugs. This steady current produces a magnetic field within the coil's core. This magnetic field forms the energy reservoir that will be used to drive the ignition spark. This breaks the primary winding's circuit and abruptly stops the current through the breaker points.Without the steady current through the points, the magnetic field generated in the coil immediately begins to quickly collapse. This rapid decay of the magnetic field induces a high voltage in the coil's secondary windings. This limit can be overcome by substituting for the breaker a pair of breakers that are connected electrically in parallel but spaced on opposite sides of the cam so they are driven out of phase. Each breaker then switches at half the rate of a single breaker and the "dwell" time for current buildup in the coil is maximised since it is shared between the breakers.Electronic ignition
The disadvantage of the mechanical system is the use of breaker points to interrupt the low voltage high current through the primary winding of the coil; the points are subject to mechanical wear where they ride the cam to open and shut, as well as oxidation and burning at the contact surfaces from the constant sparking. They require regular adjustment to compensate for wear, and the opening of the contact breakers, which is responsible for spark timing, is subject to mechanical variations. In addition, the spark voltage is also dependent on contact effectiveness, and poor sparking can lead to lower engine efficiency.Electronic ignition (EI) solves these problems.Hall effect sensor, which responds to a rotating magnet mounted on a suitable shaft. The rest of the system (distributor and spark plugs) remains as for the mechanical system. The lack of moving parts compared with the mechanical system leads to greater reliability and longer service intervals. In some cases, a modern distributor will fit into the older engine with no other modifications.Other innovations are currently available on various cars.In some models, rather than one central coil, there are individual coils on each spark plug. After a while it became logical to combine the functions of fuel control and ignition into one electronic system known as an engine control unit. This was made possible by low cost, high speed, and small footprint microcontrollers.Capacitive discharge digital ignitions store charged energy for the spark in a capacitor within the module that can be released to the spark plug at virtually any time throughout the engine cycle via a control signal from the microprocessor.Primary sensors on the system are engine angle (crank or Top Dead Center (TDC) position), airflow into the engine and throttle demand position. The circuitry determines which cylinder needs fuel and how much, opens the requisite injector to deliver it, then causes a spark at the right moment to burn it.Early EMS systems used analogue computer circuit designs to accomplish this, but as embedded systems became fast enough to keep up with the changing inputs at high revolutions, digital systems started to appear.Other systems dispense with the distributor and coil and use special spark plugs which each contain their own coil (Direct Ignition). This page was last modified on 25 May 2008, at 06:22.This article may not meet the general notability guideline or one of the following specific guidelines for inclusion on Wikipedia: Biographies, Books, Companies, Fiction, Music, Neologisms, Numbers, Web content, or several proposals for new guidelines. If you are familiar with the subject matter, please expand or rewrite the article to establish its notability. This article has been tagged since July 2007.Early career

hbx.Do you value the information you're getting from AlterNet?Tell us how we're doing. When will the US and the UK tell the truth about Israel's nuclear weapons?Get AlterNet in your mailbox! The risk of a nuclear conflagration could be greater there than anywhere else.Any nation developing them should expect a firm diplomatic response. But if, as Bush claims, the proliferation of such weapons "would be a dangerous threat to world peace", why does neither man mention the fact that Israel, according to a secret briefing by the US Defence Intelligence Agency, possesses between 60 and 80 of them? But everyone who has studied the issue knows that this is a formula with a simple purpose: to give the United States an excuse to keep breaking its own laws, which forbid it to grant aid to a country with unauthorised weapons of mass destruction. In 1986, when the nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu handed photographs of Israel's bomb factory to the Sunday Times, he was lured from Britain to Rome, drugged and kidnapped by Mossad agents, tried in secret, and sentenced to 18 years in prison. However, in December last year, the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, accidentally let slip that Israel, like "America, France and Russia", had nuclear weapons. But US aid continues to flow without impediment. As the fascinating papers released last year by the National Security Archive show, the US government was aware in 1968 that Israel was developing a nuclear device (what it didn't know is that the first one had already been built by then). At first, US diplomats urged Washington to make its sale of 50 F4 Phantom jets conditional on Israel's abandonment of its nuclear programme. As a note sent from the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs to the secretary of state in October 1968 reveals, the order would make the US "the principal supplier of Israel's military needs" for the first time.In return, it should require "commitments that would make it more difficult for Israel to take the critical decision to go nuclear".Such pressure, the memo suggested, was urgently required: France had just delivered the first of a consignment of medium range missiles, and Israel intended to equip them with nuclear warheads.Twenty days later, on November 4 1968, when the assistant defence secretary met Yitzhak Rabin (then the Israeli ambassador to Washington), Rabin "did not dispute in any way our information on Israel's nuclear or missile capability".He simply refused to discuss it.Four days after that, Rabin announced that the proposal was "completely unacceptable to us".On November 27, Lyndon Johnson's administration accepted Israel's assurance that "it will not be the first power in the Middle East to introduce nuclear weapons".Henry Kissinger and another official in July 1969 reveals that Richard Nixon was "very leery of cutting off the Phantoms", despite Israel's blatant disregard of the agreement. The deal went ahead, and from then on the US administration sought to bamboozle its own officials in order to defend Israel's lie.See more stories tagged with: nuclear weapons, npt, .Read more of his writings at Monbiot. This article originally appeared in the Guardian. The comments for this story have been closed.Thank you to everyone who participated. As usual Mr Manbiot turns in a well informed and insightful article but I must disagree with his position that Iran has serious designs on obtaining a classical nuclear weapon in the near future and I believe our government is quite aware of this.DU too much here so I'll assume you know something about the subject, if not Google it.Under fire for the radioactive dust that DU spreads the Pentagon says it's safe enough to eat.I'll believe that when it's regularly sprinkled on freedom fries as a seasoning. The US has said we would accept nuclear power in Iran but not enrichment to produce the fuel for plants. This would make sense, since it would make Iran dependant upon external sources so that at least supplies of DU could be cut off in the event that a future conflict occurs. This from our OWN DU weapons.RE: The other nuclear weapon.RE: The other nuclear weapon.Had the Aras not been hell bent on destroying a nation the UN (hence the world) had established, maybe Israel would not need Nukes. The Arabs are crazy for sure!Is that eight countries having nuclear weapons? The Bush regime is threatening to attack Iran which has no nuclear weapons!History will call Bush the ABSOULTE WORST PRESIDENT EVER!Iran's Mysterious ever so veiled in mystery Bomb.So George agrees with the war mongers in the Whitehouse hey ?"Like them, I believe that Iran is trying to acquire the bomb."George gets his info from, to allow him to be so certain of this.Claims that are so similar to the Iraq debacle, we simply cannot ignore in hindsight. Then we have the audacity to look in the mirror next day and ask, "why do they hate us so "?RE: Iran's Mysterious ever so veiled in mystery Bomb.Israel is well aware of my 2005 and 2006 video interviews that will continue to stream freely on WAWA until Vanunu is allowed to leave Israel. In 1986 Vanunu shot two rolls of film documenting that Israel had gone nuclear.Just a few days after being baptized a Christian, Mordechai Vanunu, a secular Jew and Israeli nuclear technician was lured to and kidnapped from Rome by the Mossad, drugged, clubbed and secretly transported back to Israel.Because he was a good worker, Vanunu was cross trained to work in many departments and only then, did he realize that he was but a cog in the machinery of weapons of destruction and he acted because, "I've heard the voice of my conscience and there's nowhere to hide."Vanunu remarked, "This is the very spot where they stoned to death the first Christian martyr for freedom of speech."Stephen was martyred before the term Christian was even coined. The night before my flight back to Florida from my first of five trips to Israel Palestine, Vanunu and I had dinner on the roof top of a restaurant in the Old City of Jerusalem where they serve the fish with skeleton and head in tact, and fries on the side.Did you know that President Kennedy tried to stop Israel from building atomic weapons? In 1963 he forced Prime Minister Ben Gurion to admit the Dimona was not a textile plant as the sign outside proclaimed but a nuclear plant. The nuclear reactor is only for peace. He wrote letters demanding Ben Gurion to open up the Dimona for inspection. The Germans gave the money; they were feeling guilty for the holocaust and tried to pay their way out.Everything inside was written in French when I was there, almost twenty years ago.Back then the Dimona descended 7 floors underground. In 1955 Perez and Gurion met with the French to agree they would get a nuclear reactor if they fought against Egypt to control the Sinai and Suez Canal.Eisenhower demanded that Israel leave the Sinai but the reactor plant deal continued on.When Johnson became president he made an agreement with Israel that two senators would come every year to inspect. In 1986 there were over 200 bombs."Israel was behind the assassination of US President John F.Gurion to open up the Dimona nuclear plant."Israel is an open society and a small country. All manner of amateur archaeologists and historians tour all over the country to visit the areas associated with the religions and the crusades. In that way he would provide critical readers the opportunity to review these documents.By not citing the documents, the author has provided the government an opportunity to redact the documents before public demand for them provides protection against such action. Both it's nukes and DU should be taken away until it completes an approved anger mangement course.Israel is a normal country and its citizenry should not be subjected to such abuse. When asked by these people which one he wanted, he replied:"Duh; I'll take the big one".Winnie arrived at the scene , and upon witnessing what she perceived to be a cruel joke on Denny, she asked:"Why do you keep taking nickles?Don't you know dimes are worth twice as much"?Denny answered:"Sure, but if I took the dime, they'd quit asking".Amadinajad is having the time of his life creating the impression among our people that he's a homicidal halfwit with total control over Iran, when neither is true.If Rocketman were an Iranian, he would probably be vehemently opposed to his government's consideration of a nuclear weapons program in the face of this threat.Too bad we can't send good old Rocketman to Teheran to get things straightened out over there. Now, Israeli could find a way to end this.Even for the Palestinians, they recognize it is a done deal that Israeli exists. But, the settlers could leave and Israeli could compensate the Palestinian people. But How to Stop the Bleeding?God commanded Israel to kill all its' neighbors. The USA is doing it for them.Israel does not want a peaceful settlement but more war, in accordance with God's orders. The vast increase in the price of oil will bankrupt most industrialised nations. It is in America's interest to lean on Israel to sign the NPT and allow INEA inspections.RE: Who loses if Israel uses its nukes?Monbiot feels compelled to pay obeisance to the status quo and forces of political correctness.Yes, Iran under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a dangerous and unpredictable state involved in acts of terror abroad. What terrorism has Iran committed recently? As far as we know, Iran has not committed any acts of terrorism since the taking of the US hostages at the Iranian Embassy approx.Don't worry, no one else does either.Of course, they don't remember it, because they never even heard of it.But that won't get us off the hook. It's only a question of time. They have no value in actual use, they are just doomsday devices. The value they have however is from having them and never using them. They are meant, as with Israel having them, to intimidate and control other countries. How would Iran even know exported nukes wouldn't be used against them by a fringe group? This is what it is all about.Where is the evidence that Iran has joined the nuclear arms race at all?!You think if Syria had nukes the Israeli Air Force would be bombing her?See, all that crap would have to stop.Israel gets away with what she can, same thing with the illegal settlements.Power is the only thing she understands.Iran gets nukes, the option to invade at whim, make demands, is flushed away.Wonder if they got to Robert Kennedy, too. You're either bigoted or just plain dumb.Let's get past the mentality and the culture of endless victimhood. In reality, Jews are just another group among dozens of other minority groups. Why the big deal and the exaggerated need for "specialness."Inexplicably this principle is true even in regard to the best interests of the U.Oh really, where is it on the rise and how so?Yes, a few years back some Synagogue here and there might have had some graffiti posted on it.So, tell me, what persecution of the Jews or for that matter, what government program anywhere is persecuting the Jews?Yet, the everything for Israel crowd needs to keep trying to revive the continued persecution of the Jews myth, to keep itself in business. And, by the way, if you want to find a group persecuted in modern day times under official government auspices, look at the USA and how it rounded up Arabs and Muslims after 911.Even though it was USA and her endless unconditional support of Israel that created the "fertile grounds" that led to the rise of Osama and his crowd in the first place.Semitism is on the Rise but many remain ignorant of it.Over 100 incidents of synagague burnings and physical attacks on Jews took place in October alone!!By 2001, the number of such incidents rose to 350.In 2002, the attackes persisted. In 2003, there was the bombing of the Neve Shalom Synagogue in Istanbul, Turkey with 57 deaths and 300 injured.Since then thousands of violent incidents have occured against Argentina's small Jewish community of 200,000 people.Davis unearths our country's forgotten stories in America's Hidden
