Hitler, he usually kept silent.So, what kinds of people joined this resistance
movement, and how did they resist?What kinds of people joined the
resistance movement?The resistance movement was filled with Germans who at first were not against the
rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism.In his book An Honourable Defeat, Anton Gill gives
the varied histories of human beings who eventually joined the German resistance movement.For example, Hans and Sophie Scholl, siblings,
were active young patriots in the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls,
respectively.Whiting 108), and one goal of
the Scholls was for Germany to be purified of Hitler.Before
the war, church leaders told the Mormons to obey the government.However, the Mormons
already planned to support Hitler and were hoping to demonstrate similarities between
Nazism and Mormonism (Hansen xiv).BBC news broadcasts in German from London, even though
that was one of the stations the Nazis tried to block.Some members of the resistance movement were actually members of the German
military.Although
Stauffenberg joined the army to fight against the Allies in the name of Germany, he ended

campaign was used to get the truth out to the German citizens about what was going on in
the war (Holmes and Keele 34).Bonhoeffer,
desperate to get the message across about the danger that Hitler posed, stated that any
leader could turn into a misleader.Later on,
Bonhoeffer demonstrated resistance again with the formation of an underground church.Jews get out of the country (Heckert).Allied countries about plans to assassinate Hitler.Hitler and the Nazi party, but they were all dangerous.Stones from the River, there are references to acts of resistance
against Hitler and the Nazi party.Many members of
the resistance made the supreme sacrifice.The range of treasonable acts was extensive: from listening to banned
broadcasts and handing out leaflets to helping Jews escape and attempting assassinations
of Hitler.However, the people who resisted did not sacrifice their lives for nothing.The
methods of resisting may not have directly accomplished the goals of killing Hitler and
cleansing Germany of Nazism from within, but Jews were able to escape and truths were made
known.Germany benefited from these people who sacrificed their safety to save others.New

willingness of the citizens to hide the Jews in their homes.Israel Cooperative Enterprise, there were also those who helped
in the rescue effort in opposition to the Nazis with no interest or feelings about the
Jews themselves.Still others helped because
they received monetary rewards from the Jews they hid and helped escape.Unfortunately, even with all of these reasons to
help Jews escape, the percentage that chose to was very small.The number of Jews
rescued varied in different parts of Europe.In
Western Europe, there was a better chance that Jews would be saved than in Eastern Europe.Western Europe were closer to neutral countries, so escape was easier
(Holocaust).There were some
officials who decided to risk their positions to save the lives of Jews.He
also saved some Jews who were already in concentration camps and sheltered others in his
home.People who chose to oppose the Gestapo by assisting Jews did so knowing that they
were taking many risks.At this time, these
commodities were not available to most people.Stones from the
River better understands the risks that Trudi and Leo are undertaking by hiding Jews
in their home.Trudi and her father make a tunnel to allow the Jews to escape because the father
and daughter realize the danger that these people are in.Many of these
stories are just now beginning to appear in great numbers because, at the time, these

railroad, or a network of safe hiding places, was developed, and the Jews relied upon the
goodness of others to help them.Thus, the underground railroad, which played an important
role during the Holocaust, is something that not many people know that much about.Because
it had to be kept so secret, there are many questions to be asked about it and about the
effects it had on the lives of the Jewish people and those who tried to save them: Who
were the organizations that helped?What was the operation
like?During the Holocaust, there were many major organizations that helped to smuggle
the Jewish people out of danger.While 5,000 visas were issued between 1940 and
1945, under the leadership of Rafael Trijillo, Levy reports that only 645 Jews actually
made the journey.Those that emigrated settled in the seacoast town of Sosua, which had
been set aside for them by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and given
generous provisions(Levy).Another
organization in the rescue effort was the OSE network in France, which, according to Dalia
and Weitzman, was run by Georges Garel and was aimed at hiding Jewish children using a
network of social workers(246).In 1943, according to Dalia
and Weitzman, the OSE with the aid of the Mouvement de la jeunesse sioniste, MJS, helped
to organize massive transports of children to Switzerland(246).Women played a major role in these rescues, and
two women, Mila Racine and Marianne Cohn, even lost their lives attempting to rescue the
Jewish children.The OSE, the MJS, and other
French agencies helped to rescue between 7,500 and 9,000 Jewish children in France (Ofer
and Weitzman 246).But the individuals involved in the underground movement during the Holocaust may
have been more important than organized groups in saving lives.There are numerous accounts of ordinary people
taking extraordinary measures to save the lives of complete strangers.For example, the Jewish Online Research Center,
includes many personal stories about the Holocaust, like the story of Stanislaw Jasinski
and Emilia Slodkowska nee Jasinska.Jewish Student Online Research Center website
reports, others came to receive shelter ( Jasinski).Devoting his life to protecting the Jewish
refugees, according to the Jewish Student Online Research Center website, Father Benoit
created false papers and smuggled Jewish refugees into Spain and Switzerland by utilizing
his connections with border guards, the French underground, and other religious
organizations.Father Benoit started sending
the refugees into the Italian occupation zones when the Spanish and Swiss borders were
more difficult to cross.After talking to the
Italian commissioner of Jewish affairs, Guido Lospinoso, Father Benoit convinced Guido
Lospinoso not to harm the 30,000 Jews living in Nice.Father Benoit, according to the
Jewish Student Online Research Center website, was then forced to move to Rome after his
plan to transfer Jews into North Africa via Italy was interrupted by the Germans.After
starting a new operation out of the Capuchin College in Rome, he obtained documents that
allowed Jewish people to escape under false names.Being a part of the
underground railroad was risky and highly secretive.Yet there were so
many people who risked the consequences to save the lives of others.Ursula Hegi also demonstrates this in her
novel Stones from the River when Trudi and her father dig a tunnel to help Jewish
refugees escape.Not only
would they have a safe passage for the woman and the child, but for others who would come
