Review: Demon Haunted World (1998) by Under the Dome
Grant Middleton, one of the artists behind UtD (Colin Anderson completes the duo), described his influences in a recent interview as "...This proves a brief lull before the storm however, which engulfs the scene in the form of a wall of classic analog sequencing.The sequences fade to herald a return to piano themes."The Aeon's Day" opens with dense pads and well placed effects which thin out at 3 minutes to usher in the sequence.That anticipation is duly rewarded in the shape of an explosive sequence which crashes onto the scene and transcends the piece to even greater heights.The supplemental patterns are also a joy to behold and the thematics are tremendous.Perhaps the highlight of the album.At 6 minutes the sequential wall hits home and again it's another blistering section.Finally "Hell"and at a touch under 24 minutes this is a substantial track in every respect.Surging synth pads open proceedings and a variety of motifs add detail before the touch paper is lit at the 7 minute mark.Sequencing is undoubtedly a strong feature of this album and the expert construction here does nothing to diminish that statement.This is a marvellous debut album in every sense and a must for collectors of quality EM.Review: Bellerophon (2002) by Under the Dome
Deep analogue sounds abound on "Liquid Sky".Even though atmospheric, it literally fizzes with pent up energy.Solar winds blow through the ether.We are now in space, "Drift" taking us on a beautiful relaxing journey through the cosmos.We finish on a more tranquil footing.Another bass sequence starts up then descends to almost below hearing though you will still feel its power.It momentarily disappears only to return with added vigour accompanied by yet another sequence just as
uncompromising as the first.This time it's an electric guitar which creates the melody.The sound chosen is exquisite overflowing with power but also emotion as it builds to epic proportions.It's really something of an anthem which is sure to be the highlight of every live performance they do from now on.You can easily imagine the scene on the front cover.We finish with another sequencer romp "Solar Gravity".It's as if Under the Dome are literally able to control thunder putting devastating power into every note, shifting it this way and that, obeying their every whim.It's as if the Gods themselves are hurtling bolts of pure energy.Inevitably the CD finishes with a massive explosion as the album goes super nova.Equal attention is paid to the atmospheres and textures which balance the stormers.Gib Armstrong has at least one, and possibly two, challengers more popular than him.Finally, Bob Regola will have a very difficult fight on his hands next November, with a perjury conviction ending his career much sooner than that.Although Republican Representative Jim Marshall's tenure will likely come to an end in 2008, the House is likely to return into Republican hands.Democrats overachieved in 2006, running the table against payjacking Republicans in southeastern swing districts and even pulling upsets in the "T."The PA Senate grows ever closer to being yet again out of reach for Democrats, as no strong candidates have been recruited for potentially vulnerable Republicans, including pay and pension jackers Dominick Pileggi in Delaware County, James Rhoades in Schuylkill County, and Donald White in Indiana County.The Democrats are also fearful about losing freshman Andrew Dinniman in Chester.The lone pickup possiblity for the Democrats may be the seat held by Bob Regola.Speaker Emeritus Perzel is showing signs that GOP leaders have successfully prevailed upon Corbett to prosecute only House Democrats, in particular Bill DeWeese.Damned if you do, damned if you don't......Not wanting to suffer the fate of their predecessors, GOP Senate leadership has decided to monitor the conservative groups that were influential in tossing out Jubelirer and Brightbill.Recall after the 2005 pay raise was passed (which he voted for and defended), Corman blasted groups that dared to criticize Brightbill and Jubelirer.Conservative and was fighting the leadership all along.He has been feverishly trying to meet with as many conservative groups and leaders over the past 8 months in order to pacify the rebellion amoung the conservative ranks.However, his biggest liability will come from the news that PHEAA, which Senator Corman is a board member of, recklessly spent taxpayers money on manicures, cigars and other perks for legislators while they were on taxpayer funded junkets.As a PHEAA board member, Senator Corman did nothing to watch out for taxpayers and turned a blind eye while his friends continued to rob the taxpayers for their own pleasure.Asher was key in securing the GOP State Committee endorsement for Corbett and raising tons of cash for his narrow 1.However, Asher, a convicted felon, has a shady past and is tied to many of the legislators (See Brightbill, Jubelirer, Perzel, Sam Smith, etc.Corbett is afraid that pursuing "Bonusgate" and "Auditgate" for fear of uncovering piles of corruption amoung Asher's pals.In fact, he might have a hard time getting reelected in 2008....Even getting elected to this post isn't a given for Perzel, who has buzzards encircling him now that his colleagues see that he is a mere mortal, and that his fangs have been ripped out by Dennis O'Brien.By all accounts Bill DeWeese is poised to be Speaker of the House in spite of Tom Caltigirone's best impression of Fredo Corleone.Curt Schroder may call for another leadership election to allow Perzel the opportunity to supplant Sam Smith as minority leader and keep his career and dignity somewhat in tact.Such a move would make no sense for Schroder.This is a paragraph of text that could go in the sidebar.
