even the old men who belonged to gang in its early days. The veteranos
or old gang members are interviewed along with their modern counterparts.Below are production
photos from the film. The 38th Street Gang began in South Central Los Angeles in the 1920's.The 38th Street Gang has changed substantially over the years.South Central Los Angeles in 1997.We had
seen them senselessly firing guns in a neighborhood full of children, yet
we had also seen how respectful they had been towards "the Dukes" and their
lowriders. One weekend Monica pitched the idea of the
gang film to Fernando Ruelas.LA visiting family
for the holidays. The former gang members who came to the meeting wanted to remain
anonymous. With the agreement that no identities would be revealed we began tape recording. The men talked for a couple of hours about how the gang had evolved since
the 1930's until today. We heard about how neighborhood kids by the
hundreds had been arrested for the beating death of a man at the "Sleepy
Lagoon."On and on
the stories went.Manuel
is a quiet man who was reluctant to admit that he used to go to the Sleepy
Lagoon (now a National Guard armory in Montebello, CA) to drink beer and
meet girls. We realized his was a typical story of young men at the time.He agreed to be our connection. We realized quickly
that to try to do this without a respected contact like him would have been
suicide. In the months just prior to shooting I worked on getting the film
financed.Like our lowrider film, no one was interested in giving us grants. The subject was just too unfamiliar to most.Part
of his responsibilities was to sell left over 16mm film to raw stock dealers.Again,
we were saved at the last minute.Since we finally owned our own gear that
was thankfully not an issue. The next problem was transportation. We only
owned a little old Honda with not enough room to haul all our gear. Our seats were scooted forward all the
way and comfort was not an option. We waited at Julio's house but no one
showed up.Duke had been shot in the back the night before.Over the course of the next few hours around 15 different
individuals showed up.After a little hesitation,
we decided to go.For the most
part we sat out in his back yard while they drank beer and talked.Tragedy was a frequent occurrence in his life and you
could really see in was painful for him.As he went on, he became nostalgic
for dead childhood friends and concerned about his bleak future. It was then
he confessed that he earned the name Teardrop for his obvious sensitivity. It was like meeting
a really nice Nazi. The last stop
we made was to see Alice McGrath, the woman who had volunteered two years
of her life to help free the 38th Street Gang members held in San Quentin
for the Sleepy Lagoon murder. She was a fascinating lady and really helped
put that farce of a trial into perspective. On our way home we drove the Honda truck up north to visit Monica's
parents and pick up an award for Spirit Doctors. When I told him we had driven it 700 miles in its condition
he could not believe it.He said that he wouldn't drive it across town.Welcome to the online home of Vatos Locos.Vatos Locos is one of Australia's top bands, blending Latin rhythms with Contemporary sounds to create an atmosphere that needs to be heard to be believed. Also performing Top 40 music and take requests for any song you want to hear, Vatos Locos is perfect for an event or function that you have in mind.Mexicans who gives up on society, are a vatos locos for EVER.I'm a vato loco for ever.Vato Loco: Does it count if it was with myself?
