This is the first full duo recording of Wadada Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton ever.There have only been three times that the two have actually performed as a duo.Some 30 years later, on April 5th, they played to a sold out house at Tonic in New York City.The duo performance in jazz has almost become a separate branch of the music.The subtleties in his playing reveal themselves with repeated listens here.Saturn, Conjunct the Grand Canyon in a Sweet Embrace is the second release, in the two part series, of a live duo performance of Wadada and Braxton.It was recorded April 5th, 2003 at Tonic in NYC.Paris in the late 60s and their subsequent return to the states and New York City.Consisting of 3 pieces, one each by Wadada and Braxton, and then one penned by the two of them together, this might be the only opportunity that one has to hear this startling music.The culmination is a pulling at the seams of the music, as Wadada and Braxton contrast and compare their interpretation and execution of the piece.Association for the Advancement of Creative

Comments: sure to be amazing!Login to add an event rating or register as a new user.This article is about the jazz musician.For the sculptor, see Leo Smith.He started out playing drums, mellophone and French horn before he settled on the trumpet.Creative Construction Company, a trio with Leroy Jenkins and Anthony Braxton.In 1971 Smith formed his own label, Kabell.He also formed another band, the New Dalta Ahkri, with members including Henry Threadgill, Anthony Davis and Oliver Lake.In 1993, he began teaching at Cal Arts, a position he currently holds.In addition to trumpet and flugelhorn, Smith plays several world music instruments, including the koto, kalimba, and atenteben (Ghanaian bamboo flute); he has also taught courses in instrument making.Smith has recently recorded a few albums for Tzadik and Pi Recordings record labels.Tawaf from 2003's "Organic Resonance" on Pi Recordings

of duo music for the time to come.Search for artists and albums Search help.Braxton and Smith's musical relationship began in 1960s Chicago in the early days of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.Since then their paths have crossed infrequently (at least on record), but their mutual admiration has remained strong.It's a stance which has seen Braxton in particular marginalised by critics and fellow musicians alike, who've viewed such aspirations with suspicion.It's possible to follow the compositional threads and really immerse yourself in the improvised dialogues; sometimes knotty, sometimes tender, sometimes furiously abstract.Very broadly speaking Smith opts for bold, vivid strokes of tone colour, while Braxton's compositions 314 and 315 (complete with their attendant graphics of course) are pointillist, urgent investigations of rhythmic interrelationships.If you choose to use this review on your site please link back to this page.
