Waldteufel biography, Waldteufel discography
February 1915) was a French composer of popular music, such as waltzes and polkas.Life
Waldteufel (German for forest devil) was born in Strasbourg to a Jewish Alsatian family of musicians.Conservatoire de Paris, the entire family followed him there.Waldteufel studied the piano at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1853 to 1857.In October 1874 Waldteufel played at an event that was attended by the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. The Prince was enthralled by Waldteufel's "Manolo" waltz, and was prepared to make Waldteufel's music known in Britain.Through these means, Waldteufel's music was played at Buckingham Palace in front of Queen Victoria.During this period he composed his best known works, many of which are still heard today around the world. In 1915 Waldteufel died at the age of 77 in Paris. His compositions were first created at the piano and later orchestrated. The typical Waldteufel orchestra consisted of strings and a doubled woodwind section, two cornets, four horns, three trombones, and a tuba, along with some percussion instruments.Waldteufel's music can be distinguished from Johann Strauss II's waltzes and polkas in that he used subtle harmonies and gentle phrases unlike Strauss's more robust and 'masculine' approach."They are beloved of pianists on account of the great rest they give to the hands, which is why they cling to them with loving laziness".It was considered that Waldteufel's music was not revolutionary, which explained why his waltzes fell out of favor as the age of Impressionism came to Paris.Works of Waldteufel

Waldteufel on myspace.Like Johann Strauss, Emile Waldteufel came from a family of dance musicians.Emile Waldteufel was born in
Strasbourg on 9 December 1837, just seven weeks after the elder
Johann Strauss gave his first concert on French soil in that very
city.Emile Waldteufel was to live in Paris for
the rest of his life.Yet,
so far only a relatively limited Society audience had known
Waldteufel's dances. In October 1874 he happened to be playing
at a soire attended by the Prince of Wales, the future Edward
VII.State Balls at
Buckingham Palace.So later did
the German firm of Litolff, in whose editions the works sometimes
appeared under slightly different German names. In addition,
to suit Germanic custom, in 1883 Litolff retrospectively began an
opus numbering system.Waldteufel appeared in London in 1885 and
Berlin in 1889, and in 1890 and 1891 he conducted at the Paris Opra
Balls. His orchestra continued to provide dance music for
Presidential Balls, as well as for other Society functions, until
1899, when he retired. He continued to compose, but his
style was by then outdated. He died in Paris on 12th
February 1915 at the age of 77.Unlike Strauss, he conducted with a baton rather
than a violin bow, and he composed at the piano, his works being
orchestrated later.The standard Waldteufel orchestration
was for strings, double woodwind, two cornets, four horns, three
trombones and ophicleide (or tuba), plus timpani and percussion.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.WALDTEUFEL: The Best of Emile Waldteufel, Vol.Hear Emile Waldteufel and similar artists on this channel.Popular Sheet Music:
