Wreckage Inc.This article is about the music production effect. For other uses, see Wall of Sound (disambiguation). The Wall of Sound is a music production technique for pop and rock music recordings developed by record producer Phil Spector in the 1960s.Spector created a dense, layered, and reverberant sound that reproduced well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era.He created this sound by having a number of electric and acoustic guitarists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of and orchestral musicians, and then recording the sound in an echo chamber.Christmas Gift for You arrived in stores the day of the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963.Recording techniques
Spector was already known as a temperamental and quirky personality with strong, often unconventional ideas about musical and recording techniques.Spector also greatly preferred singles to albums, describing LPs as, "two hits and ten pieces of junk".In the 1960s, Spector usually worked at the Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles because of its exceptional echo chambers, essential to the Wall of Sound technique. The signal from the studio would be played through the speakers and would reverberate around the room, being picked up by the microphones.Songwriter Jeff Barry, who worked extensively with Spector, described the Wall of Sound as:
"basically a formula.Phil used his own formula for echo, and some overtone arrangements with the strings.Phil Spector and is cited as a famous example of his "Wall of Sound".Recordings produced by Spector for Leonard Cohen and Ramones have been subject to much criticism.Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man employed a grand Wall of Sound and was a direct departure from Cohen's usual stark acoustic sound. He calls this the Mystic Space, because he intends that here the invisible 'wall of music,' proceeding from the invisible orchestra, shall separate the real (that is the audience) from the ideal (the stage pictures. If we may so express ourselves, the audience will perceive the scenes through an invisible wall of sound."Grateful Dead
The term "Wall of Sound" was also used to describe the enormous public address system designed by Owsley Stanley specifically for the Grateful Dead's live performances circa 1974.Raymond Scott nicknamed the vast array of homemade sequencers and synthesizers that took up a wall of his studio the "wall of sound".Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's landmark Born to Run, which includes more than 30 guitar tracks incorporates Spector's "Wall of Sound" approach. The most recent example of the Wall of Sound technique was in Mariah Carey's holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You".Shoegazing
Shoegazing, a style of alternative rock, is influenced by Wall of Sound.Common musical elements in shoegazing are distortion (aka "fuzzbox"), droning riffs and a "wall of sound" from noisy guitars.Vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone, but underneath the layers of guitars is generally a strong sense of melody.Phil Spector: Out Of His Head. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Since you don't, you're missing out.Or just click here to continue to the Wall of Sound website.Well you can't go wrong with this batch of groovy guitars. They were thee masters of dark visionary psychedelia.Whichever phase they were in...The fourth disk is a double sided lp of six tracks, previously unreleased, from the same sessions. It is vaguely creepy, sometimes hilarious and all the way weird. These are audio snapshots presented in the mysterious haze of the past, the unknown and the unknowable. We reviewed this a while back, noisy psychedelic punk foolishness all wrapped up in black and recorded by an magic elf or some such nonsense.Well we have the last copies available anywhere and forever. For those who don't know, this is the current band of the man who was behind Red House Painters. His voice is still remarkably rich, intimate and warm. The songs alternate between acoustic and electric and are all gorgeous. But like I said, no surprises.Still, the guy's a national treasure. It's very very nice though.Anybody else remember that most excellent Innature compilation of last year?Well, I most certainly do...Anybody out there into Kraftwerk or Throbbing Gristle might want to check it.Killer washers of heavy electronic noise connected by buzzes of melodic synth....This CD is a heavy historical document of NOISE!"Featuring the first and last U.Location: Rendezvous Jewelbox Theater 2320 2nd ave.
