The original German word has entered our collective consciousness in its whole, original iteration.Toward the end of the Reagan years, I took my first teaching job.The difference may have been only in the land that they lived on, most of it homesteaded by earlier generations.The land there is flatter and less rocky; there is more water.You see more barns, and the barns you see are better maintained.The western side of the state sports both the Black Hills and the Badlands; though the land flattens out considerably once you get out of the Hills, much of it retains a rolling presence.The homesteads are less treed, and hold closer to the ground.Nissan I pulled with it.This, no doubt, was the vehicle to have, as one braved dirt roads and South Dakota winters!Even though I was obviously a stranger in my little white hatchback, everybody waved at me as we passed on the roads.Though I was a stranger, everyone knew who I was.No one happened this far into rural America by accident: here was the new schoolteacher.Though on a superficial level the politics may have been the same, it really was a whole new world.The men spoke to me of AI with a knowing tilt of the head; I wondered what interest they might have in artificial intelligence (they were of course referring to artificial insemination.In other words, work on a ranch requires not only presence, but also competence.Every morning, we started the day with journaling.They bury them, it turns out.How does one dig a hole that big?Or, in fact, much of any practical question.You ration the gas in your vehicle, and make sure you always have enough to get back to town where once again gas stations are in plentiful supply.Perhaps the biggest thing I had to get used to, though, was the different concept of space.The sunsets that year were spectacular: huge forest fires had been blazing in China and Siberia, which sent enough particulate into the atmosphere that the setting sun lit up half the sky even a world away.Those same sunsets, surely, could have been seen by folks all over the US, but when our space is so delineated by buildings and trees, and when the buzz of civilization keeps us distracted, we tend to pay less heed to the larger world around us.He was surprised to see me when he opened his eyes.And he was right: until I drove into the area, he was likely the lone inhabitant of that 10 mile by 10 mile tract of land.In fact, perhaps I should have left after that first year.Post a Comment
