Wayne Shorter biography, Wayne Shorter discography

OK to be vulnerable, to open oneself and take chances, and not be afraid of the unknown. It is attached to no extreme.Irish song that was used in a movie with Jeanette MacDonald and Brian Ahearn. The message of the tune is, whenever a tragedy comes, can you smile through it?Well, I say, if your feelings are only red, blue and yellow, how far can you extend yourself in a world that needs extending today?California then and I was driving home when I started thinking about old movies I had seen, and this song popped into my head. The ethereal "Tinkerbell" is distinguished by a freewheeling conversation betwteen Perez's piano and Patitucci's bowed bass while the more turbulent "Joy Ryder" is anchored by Blade's muscular yet flexible backbeat and Patitucci's deep, minimalist groove.Shorter stretches out on soprano sax on this remake of the title track from his 1988 Columbia album."Over Shadow Hill Way" (also from 1988's Joy Ryder) gets a looser, more interactive interpretation than its original incarnation.Gustav Mahler used to go back and look at stuff he had written when he was a kid.It was supposed to be finished but then he would incorporate it into other pieces, developing it in his adult years.Vivien Thomas (pioneer in treatment of blue baby syndrome), Bess Colman (groundbreaking WWI aviator), Henrietta Brodkrany (submarine torpedo experimentation in her kitchen sink), Gary Morgan (inventor of the traffic signal and the gas mask), Nicolai Tesla (electricity and beyond), Dr.Stephen Hawking (quantum physicist), and Christopher Reeves (stem cell advocate).More than half a century after embarking on his lifelong musical adventure, Shorter is universally regarded as a living legend in jazz. But if the prolific composer had never written a single tune, his signature sound and choice of notes, sense of economy and unparalleled expression on both tenor and soprano saxes would have earmarked him for greatness. And imagination is part of that adventure."It was a Norman Granz Jazz at the Philharmonic show in Newark and he was late coming to the theater. While still in high school, Shorter participated in several cutting contests on Newark's jazz scene, including one memorable encounter with sax great Sonny Stitt. He attended college at New York University while also soaking up the Manhattan jazz scene by frequenting popular nightspots like Birdland and Cafe Bohemia.Wayne worked his way through college by playing with the Nat Phipps orchestra.Army I went to the Cafe Bohemia to hear music, I said, for the last time in my life. And he asked me to sit in.Oscar Pettiford was on cello. All this stuff is going on and I gotta go to the Army in about five days!He remained with the Jazz Messengers through 1963, becoming Blakey's musical director and contributing several key compositions to the band's book during those years.Shorter made his recording debut as a leader in 1959 for the Vee Jay label and in 1964 cut the first of a string of important recordings for the Blue Note label."Pinocchio," "Sanctuary," "Fall" and "Footprints."Weather Report with keyboardist and Miles Davis alum, Joe Zawinul.Shorter followed in 2003 with the ambitious Alegria, an expanded vision for large ensemble which earned him a Grammy Award. They want to be on their Ps and Qs on stage, put their best foot forward, play their best runs, their best and try to impress people.I'm 71, I've got nothing to lose now.I'm going for the unknown."Wayne Shorter Wins 2 Grammys!Wayne, Brian, Danilo, John, when are you folks going to make up your mind to release another CD (a double one this time ?Miles days in the mid 70's as a young 20 year old.Park West in Chicago in the late 70's.The tight musicianship and high level of improvisation were unlike anything I'd ever heard.Omaha, hoping to upgrade once there.Keep doing what you're doing Frat.Wayne Shorter on June 6th 2008 in Chicago with Footprints on my mind.Is there a CD that has that nonstop format of these new compositions?Dear Wayne,I am calling from France and will see you in Vienne.Shorter first recorded as a leader on the Vee Jay label, with albums such as Second Genesis, Blues A La Carte, and Wayning Moments.Concurrent to this Blue Note period, Miles Davis brought the musician into his group in 1964 and Shorter, along with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, created a sound with a bandleader that changed the face of the jazz during that tumultuous decade. The group stayed together until 1970, when Shorter formed Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. He won the Downbeat poll on soprano nearly every year after 1969 (and he continues to have many fans who will listen to him in any musical context). The session included an impressive array of musicians like the Brazilian vocalist Milton Nascimento, Airto and Herbie Hancock on variously recorded tracks. The motion picture "Round Midnight" (which garnered Hancock an Academy Award for best soundtrack) featured Shorter's playing on both tenor and soprano. It contained four kayboards and a battery of drum machines as an expansion of the electronic sound that the saxophonist had developed with Weather Report.Just as Miles Davis had helped to "discover" Shorter in the early 60s, Shorter has in turn focused the spotlight on a number of excellent players in his own band.Marilyn Mazur are the newcomers who have backed Shorter in recent years. As he gained his own musical signature, he took off from where John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy had ended, beginning to use his music to tell stories like an impressionist painter.Biography courtesy of AGM Management Co.Wayne Shorter is one of the most unique and influential saxophonists and composers performing today.Davis, as well as his work with the seminal fusion group Weather Report, and his own very creative groups.Wayne had just that day purchased a 75,000 series Mark VI tenor and this was his first opportunity to try it out.He was also playing a tenor which he had previously owned, and had it gold plated. The conversation begins, appropriately enough, on the subject of saxophones. It makes you use muscles that are not necessary.Johnny Griffin was telling that he was playing one and the sleeves of his clothes would get caught in the side keys.He said it played good, but it messed him up.And also the high register top notes had a tendency to crack. The one I have now I just got today. He had a Selmer Balanced Action didn't he?But later on he got a VI.Yeah, it makes you feel like a violin player. The guy making it really has to follow it through. It has another kind of sound, heavy kind of sound. The first horn I ever played was a Martin.Sonny Rollins in Newark, New Jersey at a place called Sugar Hill.Army and I had a weekend off. This was when Max Roach and Sonny Rollins were playing together, right after when Clifford Brown died.He put the mic right on the stage. One time I was with Coltrane. We went from New York to New Jersey. He had a gig there with Miles Davis and he wanted me to ride with him.He asked me to come over to his house a lot at that time, and that night he had a gig.He said that the last time he was at this place somebody stole his horn.He didn't feel so bad when I told him someone took 'Trane's horn too. When I was with Miles' band somebody stole my horn from the limousine in which it was locked. It was a professional job. They stole it, and relocked the car.Art came over and asked me if you could use my Selmer, which you did for a set.Within a couple of days we walked on stage at the Hollywood Bowl.We went through a lot of things and I knew them all.Miles out since I was fifteen, as well as Bird.I've got your first record on Veejay Records, 'Introducing Wayne Shorter' and Lee's on there, as well as Wynton Kelly, Paul Chamber, Jimmy Cobb. You've had a very prolific career and I admire it greatly.Maybe you could talk a bit about what you've been doing with your own bands.Well, if jazz to me means no category, then I've got the green light And if it sounds like..They expressed something, if not themselves.I'm working on something now that I'm trying to finish. If you want to call it classical, go ahead. It's for full orchestra and we did part of it in Japan already.Richard Stolzman was the guest soloist. He and I played together with the New Japan Orchestra, which is Seji Ozawa's workshop or home orchestra. We had fun, and they recorded it somewhere with the microphone under the stage, so I've got the first seven minutes of it.I'm not with CBS now. That happens all over, managers dealing and piling up contracts and they say, 'Well, we keep you working! Now I'm record contract free and manager free.Well, it's almost the same as a lot of these classical composers who think, where do you go after Stravinsky? There is an inconspicuous change that doesn't always have to be explosive. We didn't come on until last, so we went back to the hotel to watch the beginning. The phone would ring, 'Did you hear that?We had a suite and people would knock on every door saying, 'Did you hear that song by Melissa Manchester?Later on my wife met her backstage and my wife grabbed me and said, 'This is Melissa. If an explosion happens, it kind of means that everybody's dumb because they didn't see it coming. You just don't seem to see that as much any more. There's some really strong young players.Sonny Rollins still has the respect.I've been checking him out since I was about fifteen. You look like you're from New York.Hey, isn't this the way it's supposed to be?Sonny Rollins and I talked quite a bit when were on the road in Japan riding the bullet train, the busses and all that.We talked about the time he fell off of the stage. His wife, Lucille, is always with him and was very concerned.Sonny, haven't you got anybody to carry that for you?Sonny doesn't like to do long tours any more. He'd say, 'Get yourself a mouthpiece made,' in a gruff voice. You mentioned earlier that you used to practice with him?We were working at this one place in New York and this lady came up to me and said, 'My name is Anita. My husband wants to meet you. You're playing that funny stuff, all over the horn.He invited me to his house, so I went.It was very nice to meet him because I knew he was the only one that was on to something musically that was moving. When I was in the Army we used to go to DC and see Miles with 'Trane and Cannonball. They were both still with Miles, but that was their off night.Yeah, and Cedar Walton, Tommy Flanagan and George Tucker. We were actually playing Giant Steps..And then we did some standards. After that, John said he wanted to leave the Miles Davis group and move on.He told me, 'The gig is yours if you want it.But, that's about the time I joined Art Blakey instead.Did you ever play with Monk?To me, you are as individualistic as Monk was.Was Monk much of an influence on you?Monk would say, 'Stick to your guns. When Marlon Brando would do something I'd say, 'Wow, play that!I'd get so into the film I'd forgot I was in the theater. The idea is to transcend music.Future thing, and Andy Summers from the band The Police was sitting next to me.When the driver turned on the radio, Andy said, (using a British accent) 'Would you mind turning that off please?I'd rather listen to the music of life for a change? When you become neutral the music is more alive than you.The ice cream is very much alive, but you're dead.As I remember, you did cartoons as a youngster. You had mentioned to someone I know that you had your original cartoons laminated so they would be saved.Welcome to the Wayne Shorter Page!Wayne is one of the greatest saxophonists and composers that the world of jazz has ever known. This page is dedicated to him and his work.Miles that didn't get changed.Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams.Weather Report with Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vitous.Columbia, which reached the top 200.Herbie Hancock on various recorded tracks.Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan.The Following div element will end up holding the actual newsbar.Saxophonist Wayne Shorter has had a long and storied career in jazz. And I realized that even in his most enigmatic moments he was composing some important lessons for me."Following is an excerpt from Footprints: The Life and Music of Wayne Shorter by Michelle Mercer.Footprints' Book ExcerptAfter serving as one of the principal architects of jazz for more than forty years, Wayne Shorter has developed a lofty goal for his music."I'm striving to open up those people who aren't used to thinking in those terms."But in his practice he also seeks enlightenment through earthly desires, and that keeps him real.Wayne always has the good stuff.Sensing the intrusion, Wayne finished his chanting. He slipped like mercury into the other room, grabbed the bottle of wine from Danilo, and knocked back a quick "shot" of merlot."Miles used to bring up Humphrey Bogart in those mystery movies he played in," Wayne said.Yeah,' and he said, 'Play that."Well, I like to make music like that," he continued."Musical motion pictures without movies.Wayne how The Red Shoes might have ended differently. He imagined a modern corrective to Vicky's romantic fatalism, a dancing Buddha character who seemed a little like himself."When she was hit by the train, she passed away, but even in passing away, according to the principle of eternal karma, she's still locked into the curse of the red shoes, still dancing in death, and can't stop. But he finds a way to overcome his stuff and change poison into medicine, so he can rescue her from the curse. Please see the Community FAQ for more information.Your purchase helps support NPR Programming.Biography Music critic Michelle Mercer has written a biography of Wayne Shorter titled Footprints: The Life and Music of Wayne Shorter (Penguin).Weather Report is enough to ensure him a spot in the Jazz Hall of Fame. But if the prolific composer had never written a single tune, his signature sound and choice of notes, sense of economy and unparalleled expression on both tenor and soprano saxes would have earmarked him for greatness.Combine the writing prowess with the fragmented, probing solos and the enigmatic Buddhist philosopher presence and you have the makings of a jazz immortal.Lester Young when I was 15 years old.It was a Norman Granz Jazz at the Philharmonic show in Newark and he was late coming to the theater. So then we were trying to figure out how to get into the theater from the fire escape around the back.He was there doing his thing.Hey, man, let me get a clarinet.Wayne worked his way through college by playing with the Nat Phipps orchestra. And he asked me to sit in.Oscar Pettiford was on cello. And outside we heard that Miles was looking for somebody named Cannonball. All this stuff is going on and I gotta go to the Army in about five days!Shorter made his recording debut as a leader in 1959 for the Vee Jay label and
