portrayed Doc Holliday very accurately.Plot
The film opens with Wyatt Earp as a teenager living on the family farm. His older brothers, Virgil and James, are away at war serving with the Union Army.He doesn't make it off the farm before his father catches him and forces him to return home.It is during this move that Wyatt first sees a man killed, shot during a gunfight.During his time there, he works also as a referee for fights, and finds himself at odds with a bully. The two move into their own house, and he begins working as a policeman.Months later, while pregnant, his wife dies from typhus. He stays by her side throughout the illness, becoming deeply depressed afterward. He burns their home and all they own, begins drinking, and drifting from town to town, eventually landing in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He robs a man for money and steals his horse, but is captured only a short time later.Years pass, and he begins working as a Deputy Marshal in Wichita, Kansas, and builds a reputation as a good lawman.Wyatt becomes involved romantically with prostitute Mattie Blaylock, and the Mastersons begin working with him as deputies.Wyatt disagrees with Ed Masterson working as a lawman, believing him to be too passive, something he makes known to Ed.However, the Dodge City council decides that Ed is more acceptable than Wyatt due to Wyatt's excessive force, and relieve him, appointing Ed to take his place. He begins working for the railroad, capturing outlaws. While pursuing outlaw Dave Rudabaugh, he is introduced to gunman and gambler Doc Holliday, in Fort Griffin, Texas, and the two men begin a friendship that would greatly benefit both later on.Shortly afterward, Wyatt receives word that Ed Masterson has been killed, having shot and killed both his assailants before dying in the street. After working there for a period of time, he and his family move to Tombstone, Arizona, under the protest of the Earp wives, and Mattie.Wyatt immediately finds himself at odds with the Cowboy gang.He meets and becomes involved romantically with popular actress Josie Marcus, which puts him at odds with her boyfriend, Sheriff Behan. The film ends with Wyatt saying to Josie "A lot of people say it didn't happen that way", to which she responds "Never mind them Wyatt.Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines. The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones.Accuracies
In the film, Wyatt Earp is shown running away from home to join the Union Army during the Civil War, and being caught by his father while doing so.He did attempt to run away from home for this purpose in his youth. His father did press to his children that nothing was more important than family.Wyatt Earp was arrested for horse theft in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.Wyatt Earp did in fact meet Doc Holiday through boxer John Shanssey, in Fort Griffin.Rudabaugh is the only outlaw to have been captured by lawmen Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, and Bat Masterson. The whereabouts of Wyatt Earp between 1871 and 1874, following his first wife's death, have for years been speculation more than fact.It is believed that he, for a time, was working as a buffalo hunter, as suggested in the film, but that has never been confirmed beyond some doubt. They never legally married, but he did allow her to use his last name. His brother, James, did marry a prostitute, Nellie Ketchum.Wyatt Earp did in fact save Mike O'Rourke, aka "Tommy behind the deuce", from lynching after the latter was arrested for murder in 1881.However, the actual name was "Johnny Behind the Deuce", inexplicably changed to "Tommy" in this film.Sheriff Johnny Behan, her boyfriend at the time.Doc Holliday and his girlfriend Big Nose Kate did often have domestic disputes, often resulting in violence.Although the film inaccuratly shows Virgil Earp losing the use of his right arm and not his left he tell his wife that "I still got one good arm to hold you with."The "Earp wives", or rather the wives of brothers Morgan, James and Virgil did not in fact care for Wyatt Earp, feeling he had too much sway over his brothers' decisions.Inaccuracies
In the film, two Earp brothers, Virgil Earp and James Earp, are portrayed returning home together following their service with the Union Army in the Civil War.In fact, James was wounded in a Missouri battle early in the war, returning home shortly thereafter.Wyatt Earp was not a well known lawman until after the Gunfight at the OK Corral.Josie Marcus was not a well known actress, and in fact had been in Tombstone, Arizona for quite some time prior to Wyatt Earp's arrival, having lived previously with a lawyer, and with Sheriff Behan. The cowboys name was George Hoy, and in fact, both Earp and Bat Mastersons brother James fired on the man, and it has been said that James Masterson actually killed the man.Wyatt Earp is depicted as having met Bat and Ed Masterson while working as a buffalo hunter out west.Historically, it is disputed as to when and where he first met the brothers, but it is certain that when he did meet them he came to know not only Bat and Ed, but their brother James as well.Josie Marcus was not present during the George Hoy shooting.Although he is portrayed in the film as slightly ineffective, Bat Masterson's brother, Ed Masterson, was shot twice during his time as a lawman in Dodge City, not just once, and was an extremely effective lawman. He killed his assailant in the first instance, and wounded his assailant, Jack Wagner, in the second instance, with Wagner dying from his wounds the following day.As to whether Walker was killed, wounded, or missed all together is debated. There is no evidence that Wyatt Earp ever voiced his disapproval of Ed Masterson being a lawman.Ed Masterson replaced Marshal Larry Deger as town marshal of Dodge City following Wyatt Earp's departure, not Earp.Tombstone Marshal Fred White was in fact well liked by the outlaw "Cowboy" faction, and contrary to the film depiction, by his own testimony prior to his death, the shooting by Bill Brocius that caused his death was accidental.Marshal Fred White was depicted as being an older man, but in fact was either 31 or 32 at the time of his death. The film portrays both the assassination attempt of Virgil Earp and the assassination of Morgan Earp happening on the same night.Outlaw Johnny Ringo was not shot and killed during the shootout at "Stinking Springs".Several men were implicated as having murdered him, to include lawman Wyatt Earp, gunman and gambler Doc Holliday, gambler Mike O'Rourke, and gunman "Buckskin" Frank Leslie, as well as little known gunman Lou Cooley, one of the few men alleged to have never feared Ringo despite his reputation.Wyatt Earp was not involved in one hundred gunfights in his lifetime.Wyatt Earp as we do today, but I will try to touch on
some of the main reasons this man, so seemingly human, could have become the
icon of western history as we know him.Paul Hutton in
the Summer of 1995 issue of Montana, The Magazine of Western History. One of the first things you will hear from critics, hack writers, and
even some historians is that Wyatt Earp was completely unknown in his own day.Prior to the 1960's, you
couldn't find Wyatt Earp in any history books or encyclopedias.Prior to Lake's
book in 1931, Wyatt Earp was no where near as well known as he would become. One need only to consult the
newspapers of the day from Dodge City and Tombstone. In one of the
previous sections on this homepage, you will find a quote from an article in the
Dodge City newspaper heralding Wyatt's return to Dodge after a brief time being
away. When the citizens of Wichita and Dodge City heard that Wyatt and his brothers
were up on charges of murder, they sent compelling letters of support to Judge
Wells Spicer in Tombstone.Even the famous Hollywood actor, Charlie Chaplin (who
wasn't from the United States), had heard of Wyatt before he met him one day on
a movie set where Wyatt was hanging around with friend William S.Sharkey fight that Wyatt
refereed in the 1890's.Since about 1905, Wyatt had sought to have published his
accounts of what had happened in Tombstone. In the late 1920's, Earp was approached
by a man named Stuart Lake, who asked to write Earp's life story.Wyatt never got to see the finished project.Lake had taken the few interviews
he had with Earp and turned Wyatt into an untarnished hero who tamed bad men of
the west with his six shooter and generally left law and order in his wake
wherever he went. But with the notoriety and fame, came the people
who sought to knock Wyatt Earp off of the golden throne that Lake had set him
upon.Wyatt Earp, but only to soil
his name.In almost every book that the prospective reader will read from an
author that is critical to the Earps, they will find that the author used
William Breakenridge's Helldorado as their core material and that they
used Stuart Lake's Frontier Marshal as the spoken word of Wyatt Earp as
dictated to Lake.Earp told his biographer
Stuart Lake...The authors in question take Frontier Marshal to be a book
from the mouth of Wyatt Earp. This hardly sounds like a man prone to bragging and lying. If you have read them, you will see what
would appear to be some obvious bragging in them.Earp historians have
pointed out that Wyatt provided the outlines for the interviews and a
professional writer wrote the article. There was one killing that Wyatt
Earp did take particular pride in, and that was the killing of Frank Stilwell.Walter Noble Burns would become famous as one of the first
authors to paint Wyatt Earp as the hero in white who saved Tombstone. He was a man of
circumstance and did what he thought he had to do to survive.Whether we condemn
him or laud him, we must not forget this fact.It would appear that
the first Earp to study law was Wyatt's grandfather, Walter, being a Justice of
the Peace in Monmouth, Illinois, although his chosen profession was school
teacher.Other children born to Walter and wife Martha were Lorenzo Dow in 1809,
Elizabeth in 1811, Josiah Jackson in 1816, James in 1818, Francis in 1821,
Walter C.Mariah would die a short time after her
birth. In 1840, Nicholas Earp married Virginia Ann Cooksey in Hartford,
Kentucky.Further children to be born would be Wyatt in
1848 (March 19th), Morgan in 1851, Warren in 1855 and Adelia in 1861.Mariah would die a short time after her
birth.Two other
daughters, Virginia and Martha died early in age. There the family would remain until Virgil, Newton and James went
off to fight for the Union when the Civil War broke out. There the family would remain until Virgil, Newton and James went
off to fight for the Union when the Civil War broke out.James would be wounded
in battle and thereafter draw a permanent disability because of it.Stuart Lake of a young Wyatt trying to run off and join the Union, but
being stopped by his father.Virgil would eventually catch up with
the family in California when he was discharged from the military. With older
brother James wounded, Wyatt grew up fast on the trip west, helping hunt and
fend off Indian raids.The
family would move back to Lamar before 1870 where Wyatt would have his first
experience as a law man and marry his first wife.Virginia Earp would live until January 14, 1893.Nicholas and Virginia Earp
would eventually settle down in the San Bernardino area of Southern California
where Nicholas was elected to the County Court and served until his retirement a
short time before his death .Wyatt
Earp:
The Early Years
In 1869, Wyatt returned to Lamar, Missouri. There he
had his first experience in law enforcement. In Lamar he ran
against his older brother Newton for the position of Constable of the Lamar
Police Force in 1870.Wyatt won the election by 35 votes.Newton, being the half brother of the other Earps, is hardly mentioned in any
reference. We know that he fought in the Civil War, was the first City Marshal
of Garden City, Kansas, and died just a short time before Wyatt. He farmed for
several years near Garden City and died in December of 1928.Some historians
have theorized that Newton and Wyatt ran against each other to heighten the
chances of making sure someone in the family got the job.Urilla died in a Typhoid epidemic. One might assume that complications of Typhoid caused Urilla to die in
childbirth. On January 10, 1870, Wyatt Earp married Urilla Sutherland
in Lamar, Missouri.Sometime that same year, Urilla died.At least two references state that Urilla died in
childbirth.Unless some author or researcher is able to locate a death
certificate for Urilla Earp, the official cause of death may never be known.Wyatt's cousin Everitt, several times, made comments in his later years
suggesting that Wyatt had a shady past in Lamar. Some have
theorized that this might be evidence that Wyatt got Urilla pregnant before
their marriage and could be the reason why the Sutherland's didn't approve of
him.Wyatt's other cousin George, also from Lamar, claimed
that Wyatt sent him a letter in later years asking him not to say anything to
biographers who might come to him looking for information about Wyatt's life in
Lamar.The lawsuit was based
on the allegation that Wyatt Earp, while Constable for Lamar, had collected fees
for licenses for the town. The proceeds of these fees were supposed to be used
to support the school fund. However, the county alleged that Wyatt had never
turned over the money that he had collected. This suit alleged that
Wyatt had falsified court documents that refered to the amount of money that he
had collected from Cromwell to satisfy a judgement.Wyatt could not be served with warrants to appear in court on the two
allegations because he had already left town.Wyatt's cousin Everitt, several times, made comments in his later years
suggesting that Wyatt had a shady past in Lamar.Everitt Earp, 1954 (10)The
hint being that the Sutherland family blamed Wyatt for Urilla's death. Some have
theorized that this might be evidence that Wyatt got Urilla pregnant before
their marriage and could be the reason why the Sutherland's didn't approve of
him.Wyatt had reason to claim he never lived there. However, the county alleged that Wyatt had never
turned over the money that he had collected. On March 31, 1871, a second lawsuit was
filed aginst Wyatt Earp by a man named James Cromwell. This suit alleged that
Wyatt had falsified court documents that refered to the amount of money that he
had collected from Cromwell to satisfy a judgement.Cromwell later had a mowing
machine siezed by the Lamar Constable to satisfy the amount the court felt was
still outstanding in the judgment.Grand Jury of the United States Court of the
Western District of Arkansas on the charge of larceny.Wyatt was charged with
horse thievery in the Indian Nations. An
unknown person paid Wyatt's bail and he skipped town. Many researchers have theorized that at this point, due to
depression from the death of his wife and child, that Wyatt ran afoul of the law
in Fort Smith, Arkansas in or about May of 1871.See The Illustrated
Life and Times of Wyatt Earp, page 19, for more details on this charge. An
unknown person paid Wyatt's bail and he skipped town. The woman, Minnie Randall, arrested with the above named men, was
not prosecuted, but used as a witness, and her evidence was conclusive. The boat seems to have been a
nautical bordello. They would later work together on the police force
in Dodge City.Bat also learned the gambling trade from friend Wyatt. They would later work together on the police force
in Dodge City.Bat also learned the gambling trade from friend Wyatt. One of the more troubling events to try to confirm in
Wyatt's early life is whether he was really a police officer in Ellsworth,
Kansas.According to Stuart Lake, Earp was offered a job with the Ellsworth
Police Force in the early 1870's.Reportedly Earp took the job for a short time
and succeeded in disarming a famous and dangerous gunfighter, Ben Thompson. One of the more troubling events to try to confirm in
Wyatt's early life is whether he was really a police officer in Ellsworth,
Kansas.According to Stuart Lake, Earp was offered a job with the Ellsworth
Police Force in the early 1870's.Some
have dismissed this story completely.Roger Myers of Lewis, KS recently pointed out that Wyatt could
have been in Wichita as early as Oct.Wyatt was generally hated and despised by most townspeople,
newspapers of the time seem to paint a much different picture of how the public
perceived Wyatt.Wyatt Earp is an excellent officer, who's conduct has
been exceptional.Earp and were intimately
