Zhivago biography, Zhivago discography

For other uses, see Doctor Zhivago (disambiguation).Doktor Zhivago) is a 20th century novel by Boris Pasternak. The novel is named after its protagonist, Yuri Zhivago, a medical doctor and poet.More deeply, the novel discusses the plight of a man as the life that he has always known is dramatically torn apart by forces beyond his control. The book was made into a film by David Lean in 1965 and has also been adapted numerous times for television, most recently as a miniseries for Russian TV in 2005.Foreground Although it contains passages written in the 1910s and 1920s, Doctor Zhivago was not completed until 1956.The publication of this novel was partly responsible for Pasternak's being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958.The Soviet government asked the committee to not award him the prize, leading him to reject it in order to prevent a scandal back at home; Boris Pasternak died on 30 May 1960, of natural causes.Doctor Zhivago was finally published in the Soviet Union in 1988, in the pages of Novy mir, although earlier samizdat editions existed.Plot summary Yuri Zhivago is sensitive and poetic nearly to the point of mysticism. In medical school, one of his professors reminds him that bacteria may be beautiful under the microscope, but they do ugly things to people.Zhivago's idealism and principles stand in brutal contrast to the horrors of World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the subsequent Russian Civil War.Yuri must witness dismemberment, and other horrors suffered by the innocent civilian population during the turmoil. His journey through Russia has an epic feeling because of his travelling through a world which is in such striking contrast to himself, relatively uncorrupted by the violence, and to his desire to find a place away from it all, which drives him across the Arctic Siberia of Russia, and eventually back to Moscow.Lara's life is also dealt with in considerable detail. She becomes involved in an affair with Viktor Komarovsky, a powerful lawyer with political connections, who both repulses and attracts her.Lara is engaged to Pavel "Pasha" Antipov, an idealistic young student who becomes involved in Bolshevism through to his father.Lara meets Zhivago as a nurse during the First World War, and the two fall in love as they serve together. He joins the Bolsheviks and becomes Strelnikov (the executioner), a fearsome Red Army general who becomes infamous for executing White prisoners (hence his nickname). However, he is never a true Bolshevik and yearns for the fighting to be over so he can return to Lara.He falls from grace, and later returns to Varykino, near Yuriatin, hoping to find Lara, who had just left with Komarovsky.Komarovsky reappears towards the end of the story. He offers Zhivago and Lara transit out of Russia.Yuri with his continuous lectures on the justice of their cause and the inevitability of their victory. He is also addicted to cocaine.Other major characters include Tonya Gromeko, Zhivago's wife and stepsister, and her parents Alexander and Anna, who adopted Zhivago after he lost his parents as a child.Film, TV or theatrical adaptations Doctor Zhivago has been adapted for film and stage several times: The most famous version is the 1965 film adaptation, by David Lean, featuring the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif as Zhivago and English actress Julie Christie as Lara, with Geraldine Chaplin as Tonya and Alec Guinness as Yevgraf.Though faithful to the novel's plot, depictions of several characters and events are noticeably different.Joseph Fiennes as Zhivago and Jeremy Irons as Komarovsky, but was cancelled. The first film version of Doctor Zhivago was a 1959 Brazilian television fim that is currently unavailable.Zhivago, a musical adaptation of the story, features music by Lucy Simon ("The Secret Garden"), a book by Michael Weller ("Hair," "Ragtime" screenplays), and lyrics by Michael Korie ("Doll" and the "Harvey Milk" opera libretto) and Amy Powers ("Lizzie Borden" and songs for "Sunset Boulevard").Broadway debut is planned sometime in 2007."Doktor Zhivago" is to be premiered in the Urals city of Perm' on March 22 2007, and to remain in the repertoire of Perm' Musical Theatre throughout the 50th Anniversary year.Perm' claims many links with the novel since Pasternak was evacuated there during WW2.Zhivago is mentioned in the lyrics of The Beta Band song "Won."Zhivago was mentioned in the lyrics of 98 Degrees' hit song "The Hardest Thing".Zhivago was mentioned in the infamous "Unforgivable" online video series.Zhivago" in an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (The Shaving) because they both allegedly "suck."Zhivago is the name of Leo's dog on That '70s Show.In the movie "Nine Months" Hugh Grant and Julianne Moore's characters are told by Robin Williams (his character) that they should get rid off the cat if they want to keep the baby and Hugh Grant's character tells not to believe Dr.Zhivago, giving the fact that Robin Williams character is from Russia. In the movie "Into the Wild", Emile Hirsch is often caught with a copy of Dr.In the film True Romance, when referencing the large quantity of cocaine he has brought with him to California, Clarence Worley refers to the stash over the telephone as "Dr.Zhivago" in the Smallville episode, "Cool".Zhivago while lamenting the sorry state of his own love life.External links Homegrown Doctor 1905 Revolution, World War I, the Russian Revolution, and Russian Civil War, as the regime of Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown and the Soviet Union established. The film's framing device involves General Yevgraf Zhivago (Alec Guinness) searching for the love child of his brother, poet and doctor Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif), and his mistress Larissa ("Lara") Antipova (Julie Christie); Yevgraf believes a young girl named Tonya Komarovskya (Rita Tushingham, referred to as "The Girl" in the credits) to be his niece. At the beginning of the film, Zhivago's mother dies (the film opens at her funeral) and he inherits her balalaika. The theme of artistic talent is repeated throughout the film, as Zhivago becomes a poet of great renown. At the end of Yevgraf's story, the girl ends the meeting and leaves with her boyfriend.Yevgraf notes that the girl has a balalaika on her back (although the instrument is in a case and it is not known whether it is the same red balalaika seen earlier throughout Zhivago's life story). He is convinced that the girl is indeed the daughter of Yuri and Lara, thus bringing a coda to the framing device.Cast Omar Sharif as Dr.Yuri Zhivago Julie Christie as Lara Antipova Geraldine Chaplin as Tonya Gromeko Rod Steiger as Viktor Komarovsky Alec Guinness as Gen.The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones. This film grossed more than every other film David Lean had directed put together.Alec Guinness and David Lean quarreled frequently on the set of this film.Guinness's performance and him personally. There is a debate among some fans as to whether the blonde girl that Zhivago sees walking on the street at the end is actually Lara, or just someone who looked like her. While greater tragedy and irony could be reflected in such scene if in fact the girl was not Lara, it was in fact Julie Christie who played the girl in the scene, and Lara did appear at the funeral immediately afterwards. The scene where Zhivago and Lara meet amidst the army deserters was a deliberate homage to King Vidor's The Big Parade, which Lean cited as one of his favorite films.Pasternak's novel had been an international success, and producer Carlo Ponti was interested in adapting it as a vehicle for his wife, Sophia Loren.Sharif loved the novel, and when he heard Lean was making a film adaptation, he requested to be cast in the role of Pasha (which ultimately went to Tom Courtenay).Sharif was quite surprised when Lean suggested that he play Zhivago himself.Peter O'Toole, star of Lawrence, was Lean's original choice for Zhivago, but turned the part down; Max Von Sydow and Paul Newman were also considered.Moscow set being built from scratch outside of Madrid. Most of the scenes covering Zhivago and Lara's service in World War I were filmed in Soria, as was the Varykino estate.Winter scenes of the family travelling to Yuriatin by rail were filmed in Canada.Movie The film version of Zhivago is faithful to the book in a general sense; the basic plot remains the same, and storywise there are relatively few deviations from the novel.Nearly half of the book's characters were excised while others had their parts significantly reduced (particularly Anna Gromeko, Pasha, and Liberius the Partisan commander). Many reviewers have criticized the film in particular for reducing the depiction of World War I to a mere five minute narration sequence, and a similar treatment of Zhivago's service with the Partisans, which took up nearly seventy pages of the novel. The scenes of Yuri's service with and escape from the Partisans included scenes where Liberius executes mortally wounded Partisans.Zhivago's horse, after the escape, is killed for food by a group of homeless children, and Zhivago comes across a group of children who are, it is hinted, cannibalizing the bodies of their parents. In the book, Pasha is a revolutionary dilettante and an apolitical military leader; his ultimate fall from grace is because he is not a true Bolshevik. In the film, however, Bolt depicts him as a hardcore Bolshevik from the beginning, though his character still develops into a more ruthless individual over the course of the story.Bolt wanted to include the book's scene where the disgraced Strelnikov returned to Varykino, met with Zhivago, and then committed suicide; Lean, however, decided to cut it out, and Strelnikov's fate was dealt with through dialogue spoken by Komarovsky.Omar Sharif later joked that it was added to reassure the audience that Yuri and Lara would ultimately get together, even though the audience would have to wait until two hours into the film for it to happen.Reception Despite being a huge box office hit (and being nominated for, and winning, several Academy Awards), Zhivago also gained a staggering amount of criticism from reviewers, largely for its length and depiction of the romance between Zhivago and Lara.Lean took these criticisms very personally, and claimed at the time that he would never make another film again.Zhivago, and its box office success allowed Lean to write off his critics.Lean would make Ryan's Daughter (1970) a few years later before going fifteen years until making his final film, A Passage to India (1984).Nonetheless, Lean's production of Zhivago has stood the test of time.Over the years, the film's critical reputation has gained in stature, and today Zhivago is considered to be one of Lean's finest works and is highly critically acclaimed, along with Lawrence and Bridge on the River Kwai.As with the novel itself, the film was banned in the Soviet Union. It was not shown in Russia until 1994.Viewed on September 10, 2007.We hope you will consider us for your upcoming events.Zhivago is still brilliantly photographed and sweepingly romantic.David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is an exploration of the Russian Revolution as seen from the point of view of the intellectual, introspective title character (Omar reflect the political turmoil raging about him.Though he is married, the vagaries of war lead him to begin a love affair with the beautiful Lara (Julie Christie).Laborious, but beautifully crafted 193 minute opus from the master of epic cinema, David Lean. One of the most meticulously designed and executed films.Fails to excite the imagination.Bolt has reduced the vast upheaval of the Russian
